“Steel production does not have to be dirty. Sweden produces a lot of steel and its one of the cleanest countries of the world. It is the structure of mass produced junk that demands cheap production costs as opposed to more expensive, but high quality merchandise that creates the pollution. We buy and throw away on daily basis as opposed to buy and hold for generations. Buying and trowing away benefits the middlemen, those who sell, because they make their money on markups. Buying and holding benefits both the craftsman and consumer. Anyone who lived in European cities knows that.”

“the fact that the US boycotted the Olympics in 1916 (over WWI), 1940, and 1944 (WWII) should be evidence that the games have been used for other than athletic competition for a long time now.
also, the 1968 Olympics in Mexico was used to push civil rights the "Black Power Salute" which was very controversial and people got all wound up back then for the Olympics to be used for something other than athletic competition

“LOL - the 1968 Mexico Olympics is where the controversial "Black Power Salute" took place, so that this is the first time that the Olympics were being used to make a global statement is laughable - we don't know that the athletes didn't bitch about the difficult acclimation to the thinner air, but we do know that it was a factor. It's also a fact that the thinner air was beneficial to some events.
