George Carlin: The Last Words of America's Greatest Comedian

Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 19:09:31 in Comedy

“When I was a child I remember him on the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. When I got older I had never really listened to his stand up until recently when I started listening to comedy radio online and they would air old Carlin standup acts. So many things he said in the past about racism, sexism, politics, consumerism, religion is so relevant today. It's amazing. This man was so on point.”

The Black Middle Class

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 17:46:38 in New York

“Yes I agree there are conservative Dems, but there's not Republican Dems. Conservatism and progressivism are principals they are not the parties that are in this country. There are progressive republicans and there are conservative dems. But you as a gay man I'm baffled that you would want to be a member of a party that completely denies who you are. I'm a black woman. What if I hated black people, (which makes no sense) and I decided to be a member of the k k k because we both believe in the same principal. Give me a break man. Create your own party my friend. Don't join a ho-mopho-bic, raci-st, se-xi-st, xe-no-pho-bic party. It's no longer the Lincoln party. They don't want you in their party. They don't say it, but they act upon it, by passing laws to deny you your rights as a gay american.”

The Black Middle Class

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 01:33:21 in New York

“I see. We need to take care of our OWN first, like the Wall Street is taking care of their own first. Why can't we all take care of each other together as one? Why don't we take care of those who most need it? Poor, disabled, children, women, people of any race or religion. I can't stand to hear people say we need to take care of our OWN first. It makes no sense to me. I'm not religious, I don't follow a religion, but it baffles me how America calls itself a judeo-christian society and say Jesus is right. How would you feel if Jesus stated, I need to take care of my OWN? It would sound very divisive wouldn't it.”

Just as you have Conservative Dems, there are also Progressive Repubs. Look it up: http://progressiverepublican.ning.com/

Obama Online -- Where Are the Young Supporters?

Commented Oct 23, 2009 at 17:08:22 in Technology

“We're here looking for jobs and seeing how we can pay for school. Also, we're mad as hell at how the Dems and Obama are not showing any backbone in regards to public option. I would rather have single payer, but public option would be fine, but they can't even make a decision on public option.”

patricksmom replied on Oct 24, 2009 at 20:18:06

“If you want jobs, as you should deservedly have, get behind sustainable energy. One reason that so many jobs are outsourced it that it is cheaper to pay workers overseas obviously. If we become energy self sufficient the cost difference between hiring overseas and here will be much less. More jobs..maybe an end to Walmart.
Many of us want progressive change and we have to continually explain to our representatives and look to elect more progressive ones in the future.”

“In the real world, If Gwyneth was just an average Jane and named her children Apple and Moses, we would find her very odd. We would be sad for the kids, since we know, they will be tormented in school or be refused a job as they get older. But since Gwyneth is a well known Oscar winning actress, who never have to take her kids to school, cause she will be homeschooling them, or might end up never schooling them, the kids need not to worry, cause their mommy is a well known Oscar winning actress.”

“Creole? I speak Creole. Millions speak Creole. Creole is not a slang. Many do not speak slang. It's just a few who do. Just cause a couple of rappers come up with terms and expressions in their songs, does not mean they're actual words. Slang is slang. It's not a language. Until many understand it, then we can say it's definitely a language.”

“There are slangs and there are proper standard languages. Please do not mix the two. Whoever thought of this Ebonics thing, was completely ignorant, ridiculous and utterly stupid. Broken English such as this Ebonics stuff, should not even be considered another language. It's broken English. And also not every black person speak this way. I'm a black educated girl, most of times, I can't understand some of these slangs and some who can't even speak proper English. Just cause these rappers today invent a new word of the day to their hit song, doesn't mean it's proper English.”

MoeB replied on Aug 31, 2009 at 16:05:09

“Not all ebonics is "broken english". And, ironically, there are words in standard english that would fit the term "broken english". See contractions.”

Shotgun Mary replied on Aug 31, 2009 at 12:45:35

“Linguists make a reasonable argument that what we recognize as ebonics is actually the English language spoken using traditional African speech rhythms and pronunciations. It has its roots in the slave culture of the 19th century. Its not just "broken English." Languages are living breathing things and when two cultures come together they often combine their languages to suit their new lifestyles. Spanglish is another example as is the combination of German, Russian, and English known as Volga German that is so commonly spoken in the area where I grew up. I think by teaching people about the existance of these hybrid languages we help facilitate communication between different parts of society.”

French Women Don't Wear Shorts

French Women Don't Wear Shorts

Commented Aug 28, 2009 at 08:07:14 in Style

“I've studied design and the shorts they are talking about are the boxy shorts that stops almost in the middle of the thighs, but not quite in the middle.

Similar to Michele's. Boxy shorts tend not to be fitted. Sometimes it's not flattering on every woman's body. So one must make sure the fit, the way it's tailored, and ways it's worn is right for that body. Originally these short were made as men shorts as the writer did mention. Valentino have never designed shorts, I may be wrong, but I've gone through his work and he's only designed couture dresses, shirts, blouses, suits and long pants. Yves Saint Laurent same thing, but there have been young designers who've taken up as Creative Director to big Fashion Houses that have done shorts. So you might think it's the original designer, but it's usually a young appointed designer to the fashion house.

I personally don't care if Michele decides to choose to wear boxy shorts. It's her decision. I can understand why she wore it, cause she wanted to be comfortable and that her body type is not for fitted short shorts due to her pear shape body, so she appropriately chose the boxy shorts.”

“Chanel said "In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress". I think Michele can wear whatever she wants, if she feels she wants to be comfortable, let it be. I like the fact she's not conforming to what people would like her to be. I too am similar in regards to not conforming, but I choose style over comfort any day. Maybe it's due to half of French blood I have in me (lol). I have my own style which is classy, many have stated this to me and I'm memorable. Many women aren't memorable due to lack of originality and just wanting to look like everybody else or their teenage daughters, which I find quite creepy.

Think of Jackie O with her haircut and box hats or Princess Diana with her beautiful blond mane. Chanel's little black dress and the well tailored suits she wore. Now Michele is contemporary. Her style is unpredictable and unique, which makes her memorable. Nobody will ever forget the inaugural suit jacket she wore. Next day everybody was talking about the color. I've seen the actual suit jacket at a museum in NY. It's blah in person, but when you see it on Michele it's alive. Chanel said it "Look for the woman in the dress. If there's no woman, there's no dress."

Boxy shorts are indeed boyish. Short shorts, HOT, if you have the body and confidence to boot.”

Eartha replied on Aug 29, 2009 at 09:16:13

“You are right, if she had to choose shorts she made the right choice to go boxy. Can you imagine if she had surprised us with a fitted shorts look? lol. Still there are many other comfortable, sporty looks appropriate for hot weather activities that would have suited her large, matronly frame much better.”
