The 2010 Elections: Bring 'em on!

Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 22:45:37 in Politics

“"That is the progressive way"? It sounds more like Ronald Raygun's Way!

It's really odd how the government, the budget and the deficit all tend to balloon under "CONSERVATIVES"

True conservatives would never have engaged in "nation building".

Several of your comments are either incorrect or disingenuous.

The pay raises for Congress are automatic, they structured it that way on purpose to avoid politicizing their pay by voting themselves raises.

Three Trillion in one month? No. The defense spending you mention is for the next fiscal year. The one trillion for healthcare you mention would be spent over TEN years. Ever buy a car? I don't know how you could be so irresponsible to spend $15,000 A DAY!”

“Odd how Bhutto was a "puppet" of the Bush/Cheney administration when that same administration refused to provide any assistance in providing security for her upon her return. Bhutto was no Sarah Palin. Bhutto may have been corrupt, her husband certainly was, but she was by no means dim witted, and the courage she displayed in returning was rather remarkable.

The "dynasty" remark is humorous considering how much nepotism exists in the US government.”

“There is no mention in the NYT article about whether the "over collection" by the NSA occurred before or after January 20th.

As for everything remaining unchanged in regards to the wiretapping, I guess Bush supporters have nothing to complain about then.

Personally I suspect that the new administration will do a better job of oversight and will be less inclined to push the envelope of legality with legal contortions.”

“I think it has been public knowledge for a while. Leaving out defense, the US is outsourcing 60% of its intelligence budget. When you think about that it should be shocking. Intelligence gathering has to be as neutral and objective, 2 things that any for-profit contracting company will never be. Some of these intelligence contractors are not even US companies!

I just watched a great film about Abu Ghraib called Standard Operating Procedure. Among the various people being interviewed is a contracted interrogator who worked for CACI.

“War requires that we dehumanize the enemy. Our military is very good at convincing young people, innocent and naive, of a Pollyanna world of good and evil where we are always the Good. When it comes down to reality however, what we are asking, demanding of them is to kill without thinking or questioning. With hesitation. It is possible though, to rationalize this as kill or be killed; to harness the instinct to survive when you are in combat.

One would think that would be enough, but to then order a person to inflict pain, to practice sadism for the sake of some elusive "greater good"? This transcends any instinct of fight or flight and demands not only dehumanizing the enemy, but to sacrifice one's own humanity in the process. In this sense Alyssa did not give in.”

“because it tells the world we have no moral or ethical standards, that we are not a Nation of Laws but rather a horde of hypocrites.

So in the call for saving lives, why don't we just threaten to behead one of Osama Bin Laden's family members?

Fact is we never tortured Japanese or German officers that were responsible for the deaths of far more innocent lives than any member of Al Queda, and we were the better for it.”

"because it tells the world we have no moral or ethical standards"

You see, this is where you go off the tracks. When dealing with people that will cut your throat slowly so you gurgle your last screams on earth in your own blood, then all moral standards are temporarily on-hold.

You do NOT fight evil behaviour, with good behaviour.”

“In this day and age they could probably place an electrode in you brain or near a nerve cluster that would make you feel the most pain humanly possible. But since this is simply an electrode/nerve stimulation and no "physical damage" is occurring then I suppose it is ok?

Pain causes a person to act in a way to stop the pain. It does not force a person to "tell the truth", it forces them to say or do anything that will stop the pain. Interrogators are aware of this. It is effective for eliciting confessions, any confessions, but it is by no means effective for intelligence gathering. Look at it's history, look at how it was used during the Korean War and the Cold War. This is why the US never used it until the neo-cons gained power.”

One could say that slaves in the US were treated better than the Japanese treated their POWs, but that doesn't mean slavery is acceptable.

To state that US soldiers have faced worse does not make the act any better.”

“There are people who have volunteered to undergo all sorts of sadistic acts: being suspended by hooks through flesh, whipped, electrocuted. The existence of masochists in society DOES not condone torture.
I guess the branding of slaves was no big deal since some consider it body art?

There is a HUGE divide between a consensual and a non consensual act. The republicants would be well served to admit that some of their members erred and move on. The pro-torture stance is absolutely ridiculous.”

“before there can be dialogue all sides have to accept responsibility for their actions. To deny any wrongdoing whatsoever and place all fault on your opposition and to then realistically expect for there to be a constructive dialogue that can lead to peace is unrealistic.

I really hope for peace in the middle east, but it seems that many people's views, on both sides, are so intractable that it will never come to be.”

Of course I was under the impression that one of the US Navy's roles was to protect American shipping abroad, wasn't that what the impressing of American sailors by the British, War of 1812, and the Halls of Tripoli all resulted in?”

So you are validating the use of violence, as long as there is a "good" reason for it?

You know, there are plenty of Somalis that are suffering and NOT threatening people's lives as a living, and your statement does them an injustice.”
