“The photo violates the privacy of the family and is disrespectful of their wishes.

In my opinion the only people supporting the publication of this photo are doing so because they feel it will hurt the morale of the military community and ultimately undermine support for our military effort in Afghanistan.”

journeygirl replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:43:21

“Read the AP story. The soldiers who fought alongside the brave lance corporal did not criticize the photographer when they saw the photo. What makes you think soldiers do not want their reality and struggles shared with the public? After all, it was a dead soldier's family that pressed for funding of adequate body and vehicle armor....something Rumsfeld was not inclined to provide. These brave men & women defend us. Why are we not obligated to defend them as well?”

“You say that like its a bad thing.

Thousands of photos and videos of disembowelled Afghan and Irani children haven't done the job, its time we found something that will grab the publics attention.

When the military's morale is high, so is the body count. I'd like to see them so demoralised that they refuse to get on the plane to go to war.

Every dead american soldier would be alive today if they stayed home.”

dutchman replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:32:05

Loki11467 replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:31:59

“I disagree. If this country wants to go to war they should know what war is like vs sitting back in our comfy rocking chairs making like leave it to beaver. It is easy to send people to die or to kill people when you don't have to deal with the consequences.”

MathIsTruth replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:31:11

“If support for the military effort in Afghanistan hinges on people living under the delusion that the events depicted in the photo are not occurring on a daily basis, then I would have to say that the support that exists is artificially over-inflated.

By the way, the event depicted was not a private event. It happened in public and was witnessed by our enemies.”

musselmanm replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:30:56

“NO! It will hurt the morale of the war mongers and profiteers. The contractors and the arms makers. It will cause the people of the world and America to see with their own eyes the unneeded loss of this young persons life. How outrageous that the truth is once more hidden from the people.
Each and every person on earth should be forced to see photos of not just war but attrocities committed by us and many others and each should be required to see a prisoner executed.
Many Christians talk of the sanctity of life while sending young men and women off to die and execute prisoners and torture even the innocent and our own soldiers are being tortured.
Just where in the ef is the moral outrage at the death for our conquer and occupy ideas?”

To continue to sanitize and hide the truth of what each of these "sacrifices" means to each of us is what is disrespectful to their service.”

and I am surprised again that privacy, to which we are not supposed to have any rights in the bedroom or reproductively suddenly becomes an issue when it comes to showing the american people what is done in our name. this young man went to war. we paid for it and he paid the ultimate price. not showing us what really happens is not asing us to pay in full.”

“The support for the war in Afghanistan was undermined a long time ago--about the time Bush let Osama bin Laden escape so that he could continue his war in Afghanistan and declare a new war in Iraq. The latest polls show that 57 percent of the population want us ot get out now. It's time to declare victory and leave. It was good enough for Nixon in Vietnam it should be good enough for Afghanistan before spend even more money and lives in a losing battle for peple whose cultural history does not bode well for Western efforts at nation building.”
