“Actually arming the mujahadeen worked exactly as planned. they forced the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Soldiers have a motto - We leave no one behind, that is true. Pvt. Bergdahl deserted his post in the face of the enemy, he was not taken during a mission. Even in consideration of the facts of his disappearance, his unit searched for him continuously and several great Americans lost their lives on those missions. Missions to recover a deserter. This is a disgraceful deal, and Pvt.Bergdahl should face a Court Martial.”

Fox News Wonders Why Team USA's Uniforms Are Not Patriotic Enough (VIDEO)

Commented Aug 7, 2012 at 10:06:59 in Media

“This man is absolutely correct. An American Olympian represents the United States of America and their uniforms should reflect the nation. It has become chic for many of the elite of this nation to down play American Exceptionalism, why? Our nation's exceptionalism started with the Declaration of Independence, our struggle to free ourselves from British tyrany, on to the formation of the world's first Constitutional government. Do we, as individuals and as a nation, always live up to the ideas of the enlightenment that were the foundation of this nation, no. The United States has made mistakes (some of them from the very beginning - allowing slavery to continue instead of abolishing it as Thomas Jefferson wanted to - ironic because Jefferson was a slave holder but that is the truth) - we are after all only human beings. But we should at all times endeavor to proclaim our ideals to the world and show pride in our nation. I think an important part of that proclamation is showing pride in our nation by having our nation's Olympians wear uniforms that highlight our national colors. Oh, and a far as the HuffPost lead in, this was not a Fox attack on Gabby Douglas - she was mentioned in the commentary but in the context of commentary on many of our athletes choosing not to wear red, white and blue on their outfits.”

Wegetitalready on Aug 7, 2012 at 12:35:41

“The "exceptionalism" is in the people. not our uniforms. not our lip service. not our national colors.”

Rich Altman on Aug 7, 2012 at 10:53:09

“It isn't our athletes or their costume designers that have "played down" American exceptionalism. It is mostly the Republican and tea party types that have tuned "elite" into a dirty word in order to curry favor with those who will never be either exceptional or elite. They aspire to nothing, dragging down the national "exceptionalism" with prideful, stubborn ignorance. Remember when the Green Beret and the other Special Forces were called our "elite fighting force?" They worked damn hard to achieve that elite status...it was not barroom bluster. Remember the American exceptionalism of landing a man on the moon (with a little help from German rocket scientists)? The elite American minds that found a cure for Polio? Or the elite minds of our nation's founders who kept the government and religion separate (among other revolutionary achievements in democratic thinking). Lack of pride in American exceptionalism is not a fashion statement...Sadly, it is the erosion of our actual exceptionalism by people unwilling to demand better from their countrymen and women; by people unwilling to strive to achieve exceptional things themselves, and by politicians refusing to call morons morons (if the shoe fits) not because of tact but out of a great fear of losing their vote. American exceptionalism does not celebrate mediocrity as a populist virtue. In real life, everyone does not get a trophy just for participating. Sometimes you actually have to achieve something exceptional, not matter what color your clothes (or your skin) is.”

I remember watching ABC broadcast the games as a boy. those commentators were professional sports reporters, led by perhaps the greatest live sports reporter the late and very great Jim McKay. “I don't think you understand, their parents or guardians do pay taxes which support their local schools. Also, school districts across the nation are under financial strain. But not because of high performing students rather years of gross financial mismanagement. Also, if you read this report closely, the real issue is not finances its the school district trying to raise the performance of another school.”

What we are talking about are 13 to 18 year olds whose parents live in China and who send their children to relatives, friends or acquaintances who live here for a high school education here. While I am willing to accept that a few of them will remain here and perhaps become citizens but most of these parents are probably NOT contemplating never seeing their children again.”

“. If they qualify to attend Mills High School then they should attend. Whether or not their parents are here is not the point, the people who are serving as their guardians are and they pay taxes just like everybody else. Also. you're missing a larger point, Asian students are and have been out performing our students for decades. And it's not because of genetics. We, as a nation, need to raise our expectations and standards for all of our students. Oh, and this is besides the point, I have lived in areas where Asian students dominated the magnet high schools and honors programs.  ”

jotwinowski on Aug 1, 2012 at 17:08:17

“I am with you on most but not all of this. I admire most Asian students - and employees - for their brains and work ethic. However, we pay taxes to maintain schools for the benefit of the country at large (so that we will have a well educated electorate and a citizenry that contributes to the general welfare of this country. If students are coming to this country solely to obtain a high school and college education paid for by the taxpayer and then intend to return "home" with the fruits of that education, there is a problem. While we accept there will always be the occasional graduate who chooses to live and work abroad, a systematic attempt to take advantage of the taxpayer requires some thought.”

“Performance should be irrelevant. Either they belong here or they do not. I do not believe that people who live with an uncle or second cousin while their parents LIVE in a different country should qualify. I have no bones with Asian students or Mexican students or caucasian students or black students. Asian students dominate in virtually EVERY school where they are present, by the way. Because their PARENTS demand excellence. Those parents should be American citizens....that is my only point.”

“Excel and we'll screw you is the message. I can't believe some of the b.s. responses I've read here - send them back to China and alike. Hey, wake the ***** up, many Asian students out perform native born Americans for a couple of reasons: as a group, they work harder, their parents are involved (some may argue over involved but...) and if they have come from Asian schools in many cases they are years ahead of our students in Math and Science. Don't punish these kids by applying some ridiculous residency standard or because the school board wants to raise the scores of an under performing school. It's wrong, period.”

“They are here to get a free education. Their parents are not here. If you were paying real estate taxes to subsidize non resident students, I wonder how enlightened you would feel. If they want to pay non resident tuition, then they should have full access. The country is already going broke paying for free stuff for corporations, lifetime welfare recipients, and other freeloaders. They are here to get a free education...nothing else.”
