“I think Mr's Obama looks lovely- elegant and that orange color is very flattering on her. Not crazy about Hilary- she looks sort of like an over-excited kindergarten teacher in that picture! Maybe if I saw her coat from a different angle? Jill Biden's outfit is not my favorite, but she looks very poised and gracious as always.”

“Whether or not they also had sex with her, holding her down while someone else does sounds like assault if nothing else. I might consent to have sex with one person, but if two other guys break into the room and hold me down, I would be pretty freaked out and yell STOP. No means no, ALL THE TIME, morons.”

“The budget for official entertaining is built into the White House budget already. The Obamas are not spending any extra taxpayer money on this at all- it is the same for EVERY President, whether you voted for him or not.

Whether or not a State Dinner is held will not make any financial difference to the country- they could not take money from the White House budget and 'give' it away if they wanted to! The last time State Dinners were officially suspended at the White House was during WW2 while DC was in an official blackout.

Read up a little and get educated about your own country's history- or just spew ignorance, like you already are.”

“We've now been advised that we just have to 'hang in there' for five or so years and our house value will come back up. We just have to do the hanging in there part, which is difficult with pay cuts and rising taxes and health insurance costs. We didn't buy our house as an 'investment property' but as a house to live in so my son could go to a decent school. I just hope our income hangs in there and bounces back up as well- otherwise we will be in huge trouble.”

“You might as well forget about housing prices going back up to where they were in 2005. That was a completely unprecedented asset bubble based on circumstances that almost certainly will not be repeated in our lifetimes.”

“Thank you Viper- we put 20% down and our property is worth much less than our mortgage. We bought when the market was not yet flooded with properties because personally and financially it was a good time for us to do so. In the past year and a half we have experienced a loss of income, a raise in all of our taxes and our health insurance and our mortgage was bought out by Bank of America! When we started trying to renegotiate our payments, we were told that if we were in 'dire straits' it might be different, but apparently because we are just keeping our heads above water, we cannot get anyone to touch our loan or work with us on it. Meanwhile our property taxes go up as our house value goes down. We don't have other investments- our house is meant to be our long-time home and it is where we put most of our money.
So yeah, don't 'blame' us for doing what we were supposed to do. I am so sick of hearing that self-righteous crap.”

Viper replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 13:40:34

“A lot of the inabilty to pay is Health insurance related. Its one of about 4 factors that have led to this mess.

Most peoples health insurance cost have doubled in just 3-5 years , while incomes dropped.

Today if you are over 50, your health insurance is likely much more than your house payment! And thats with a huge deductable. These are problems not faced anywhere else in the world but here. SO SAD! And if you get sick.. its all over!

And as property values dropped, property insurance is still climbing at 10% per year or more.

regards”

“Actually I work at a independent bookstore and read a lot of YA titles. The Twilight books are so poorly written that I actually enjoyed the first movie MORE than the book- which almost never happens. I can see why the storyline appeals to mopey teen age girls, but the writing quality is just terrible. I was actually hopeful that the film franchise would save the series for me, but apparently not!”

Martha Stewart On Rachael Ray:

Martha Stewart On Rachael Ray: "Not Good Enough For Me" (VIDEO)

Commented Nov 20, 2009 at 14:20:29 in Media

“Martha Stewart is very talented. But I think people also need to realize that it takes an enormous team of people to do all the stuff they see on her show. Martha herself is not doing the prep work on meals or craft projects. Not to say she is not talented.

I've been cooking since I was very small and have also been to cooking school, so it is something in my 'skill set'. That said, I have never liked Martha Stewart's actual cookbooks, because I've found that the measurements in many recipes has seemed 'off' and it is difficult to reproduce them to the standard you would want.

Rachel Ray may not be as technically skilled as Martha, but I do think she is more accessible to most home cooks. For many of her fans, just getting into the kitchen and feeling like they can prepare a meal with confidence is a step that will lead to more home cooking and more complicated recipes.

I don't really watch either show. Each has information to offer. I think Martha Stewart going out of her way to knock Rachel Ray was just incredibly ungracious and unnecessary. She could easily have made a polite reply about how what Ray does just 'isn't her thing' and left it at that. As far as responses go, Rachel Ray was FAR more polite and gracious. Martha came off as bitchy and not the arbiter of social graces her image make her out to be.”

“Ok, I would not have made Pam's choices in life and I'm glad my son won't be catching a sex tape of me on the internet- BUT, I have to give her props as a mom for not just trying to ignore the situation and for talking to her kids about it in a straightforward way.

After all, she made the tape when she was young, before having kids- and now she appears to be dealing with the consequences in a way that at least makes it as positive as possible for her kids. Parents - ALL parents- do LOTS of things before having a family that they would probably not do after having kids. This is sort of the more extreme version of finding a sexy picture of mom from her college days or trying to explain to your kids that you smoked pot but you don't want them to, or something like that.

Poor original judgment years ago- yes. Proactive, good parenting now ( making the best of it, at least) - also a yes in my book.”

sjpersonal replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 17:28:42

“I don;t think that it was a mistake for her to make the tape. Quite a few people do, the thing is that the tape should never have been accessible to anyone else. Something like that should have been in a safe or a locked drawer, they should have been the only people to see it.”

“True- but it can be incredibly difficult to get YOUR OWN records these days! At my old doctor's office, I had to send out to their outside billing company and was told that they did not keep records past a certain amount of time. Maybe I should try the former billing company the office used to use? Could I just see my own chart and make a copy of it for myself- no sorry, against office policy. Did I mention that I was told I had to pay $35 to the billing company for each copy I wanted of MY OWN MEDICAL RECORDS?? Ridiculous!”

“Um, my case was pretty straightforward. I had the surgery on the approved and scheduled date and a week later the insurance company called and said " No wait, it isn't approved for that date after all" When I (flabbergasted) said " But it's ALREADY HAPPENED?!? I was told- "Oh, that means you had an un-approved procedure." then I had to duke it out for months and months until I proved that they HAD approved it. But the burden was ALL on me to prove everything- they did not have to 'prove' anything to anyone. I can't think of any excuse that would have made what they did reasonable or ok.”

“Something similar happened to me about 10 years ago. I had an approved surgery on the day that it was scheduled for. The week after, the insurance company called and told me it would have to be re-scheduled- AFTER I had the surgery. While I was recovering we started to get bills, bills, bills (including $36 for a Sharpie marker in a sterile packet used to mark my skin- talk about waste) . The insurance company tried to back out on the approval and it took over a year of gathering paperwork, backtracking phone calls and literally hundreds of hours on the phone to get them to pony up. Meanwhile I was calling the hospital, etc. every week to update them so they knew I was trying to get it taken care of and my credit didn't go down the drain. Luckily my doctor allowed me access to my own file- where he and his office had made notes including the date of the insurance company's original approval! Even then, it took months before they paid everyone. I was given a different story and run around every time I called the insurance company- CIGNA, if anyone wants to know.”

I can't tell you how many people on these boards have said things like 'well obviously you shouldn't have bought a house' or 'you don't DESERVE a house, no one does' . Even people who bought within their means and had a down payment are IN TROUBLE NOW - the situation has changed drastically on so many levels!

It would be different if it were just one unexpected increased cost. Or even two- but after they keep piling up and piling up... sooner or later, we are just not going to have enough money to pay everything if our wages keep going down while our costs keep going up. It's that simple.”
