Rosa DeLauro, Key Pro-Choice Dem, Makes Case For Senate Abortion Language

Rosa DeLauro, Key Pro-Choice Dem, Makes Case For Senate Abortion Language

Commented Dec 29, 2009 at 13:12:53 in Politics

“It would be nice if the abortion language issue was that big an obstacle. But it's not, regardless of all the wailing and sanctimoniousness. The Democrats are losing the war of words on not just abortion but the entire health care coverage issue. Look at the Republican Party so-called alternative health care bill in which they specifically address abortion and have worded it almost the same as the Democrat-backed bill currently being debated. Here is the exact wording of their abortion funding measure:

Section 303 states, "The limitations established in sections 301 and 302 shall not apply to an abortion if "(1) the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest; or (2) in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself."

After all, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell stated recently that he and his Republican insurance company lobbyists will repeal any bill passed by a Democratic-controlled congress if they regain power in 2010. In other words, he will repeal a bill that hasn't even passed yet, regardless of how much good it will dor or how much it will help the millions of Americans without any health care coverage.”

“The Cheney One Percent doctrine as described by Ron Suskind in his book with that title makes it clear that anyone who is perceived to be a threat must be taken out -- even if that threat is only 1%.

We should have learned years ago that we cannot be the world's policemen yet the Afghanistan war has made us just that. In Iraq, we have been nation-building there ever since May 2003 when Bush famously landed on the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln floating off the coast of San Diego where he stated on the flight deck that major hostilities had ended while a banner wafted over the deck proclaiming "Mission Accomplished."

Now, Lieberman and the Republican hawks whom he sides with most of the time, want "preemptive" military attacks against Yemen. The birthers, tea baggers and AR-15 gun toting crazies who make up most of the Republican Party today may well get their wish if the GOP take over either the House or the Senate (maybe both) in 2010.

To the severely stressed out and under-manned U.S. military there can be only one message: "Get ready to deploy to Yemen, Syria, Iran and any other country whose profile fits Cheney's 1% doctrine." To the rest of the country, if Bush's wars weren't bad enough you ain't seen nothin' yet if the war-thirsty Republicans get their way. For the Republican Party of No at least that's one way to end the health care debate.”

“Wall Street Reform? Yes, we heard that after Savings and Loan fiasco in the 80s and again with the Enron debacle in 2001.

The names of Dick Cheney's Energy Panel which was set up to benefit and reward the big utilities like Enron, Big Oil and Big Coal, were never revealed to the public under the cloak of secrecy. The ever-compliant Republican partisan, right-wing ideologues on the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that those names can never be revealed even though the panel's recommendations affected the energy costs and electricity needs of every American.

Few ever heard of credit default swaps until they imploded or how the super wealthy clients who bought into hedge funds operated under arcane accounting rules -- written by legislators for the benefit of the Ponzi Scheme Wall Street hucksters.

Hedge funds were also ruled off-limits to IRS auditors when the same corrupt Star Chamber U.S. Supreme Court ruled that hedge funds could be reported as capital gains, allowing them to pay only 15% tax (most of which was sheltered from paying any tax at all) instead of the customary income tax that most American citizens pay.

The fat cats' answer is the same as that given by the late Leona Helmsley who once famously proclaimed, "Only the little people pay taxes." "Taxes? We don't pay no steenking taxes!"

With our courts solidly under the control of Republican judges, don't expect any reform unless it enriches the very wealthy.”

“Dick Cheney who, when questioned by former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neil over the size of the gargantuan $1.35 trillion tax cut giveaway to the wealthiest 1% of the population answered, "It's our due." Our due, means "we, the fat cats, get to decide the winners and losers in the world. You working stiffs who put your blood, sweat and tears into building the once-high standard of living in America are expendable.”

Writer Michael Grunwald, singing the praises in Time Magazine's Person of the Year, Ben Bernanke, underscored his contempt for the "expendable" American worker when he slammed Florida Congressman Alan Grayson, calling him a "rabble-rousing Democrat" who questioned Bernanke over the larcenous credit default swaps (CDS) that the Feeding Chairman made with foreign central banks. Grayson's remarks were posted on YouTube for all the hoi polloi to watch. Grunwald, in defending Bernanke, condescendingly wrote, "Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't provide Fed-to-English subtitles."

Yeah, Mr. Grunwald, we're all just too dumb to get it. But, it doesn't take long for most Americans to figure out that "credit default swaps", "Illiquid assets" and "negative cash flow" are scam jargon used by deceitful bankers who install people like Greenspan, Bernanke, Paulson and Geithner to keep the conveyor belt of free money going into the coffers of the 21st Century Wall Street mafioso. "Too big to fail" is just another piece of economics mumbo jumbo that really means, "We're so big that we can steal with impunity.””

“The truth is, Democrats in conservative, mainly the states in the deep South, have always been Republicans. They should more accurately be called Dixiecrats, who when it comes time to vote on key issues, they consistently side with the Republican Party.

It's heads I win, tails you lose for Texas voters, a state that threatened to secede from the union over the Obama stimulus package. Unbeknownst to most of the voters (who would vote Republican regardless)Texas has received billions in the stimulus money with the exception of the Texas unemployment fund which Republicans claim had too many strings attached to their liking.

Griffith should not be considered a turncoat in any way. He is and always has been a Republican. But, he is typical of today's politicians in both parties -- hypocrites.

Republicans in the antebellum South will never give up their racist attitudes and mind-set or politics. After the Civil War the South became predominantly Democrat only because they opposed reconstruction policies imposed on them by the North. They remained that way until the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 when segregation ended under Democratic Party President Lyndon Johnson. Again, to "punish" the party that recognized and gave blacks more equal rights, the South became solid Republican. To put it more accurately, they became Dixiecrats once again. Mr. Griffith is back home where he belongs --in the Republican Party of No.”

Of course there will be difficult deals like Washington state getting the Medical Center in San Antonio but only if they take the Pantex Plant in the panhandle. “Most of us saw the handwriting on the wall years ago. It doesn't take a Nobel Prize winning economist to know that the Wall Street hucksters got everything they wanted. Once they cleaned out the U.S. Treasury and major banks, they demanded more free money from the taxpayers. Bush, Paulson, Greenspan and his successor, Bernanke, all complied.

Republicans and their benefactors, the Big health insurance companies, Big pharmaceutical industries, Big Oil and Big Coal have to be ecstatic over the outcome. They can now heap all the blame on Obama while the hoi polloi scream and shout at town hall meetings waving their pitchforks, tea bags, AR-15s and wail over socialist Obama economic policies.

Unions and their once well-paid workers who they represented have all been eviscerated, giving back wage increases, pension and health benefits and tens of thousands of lost jobs, all to the delight of the Republicans whose crusade against unions is historical.

We are told that the bubbles were about to burst in the housing industry where subprime loans were the immediate cause of the economic collapse. But, even that was a delusion fabricated by the Ponzi Scheme swindlers once the Wall Street larcenists bundled the loans together and created another arcane money-grubbing scheme called "credti default swaps" and other hedge fund hustles to pitch their snakeoil.

The conveyor belt of free money will never stop. The Wall Street hooligans long ago shorted the American economy and sold out the working person.”

"Onward Christian Athletes": Tom Krattenmaker's Book Explores Evangelical Monopoly In Sports World

“For every victory secured by "christianity" there are far more losing athletes who suffer emotional pain and even humiliation if they think their poor play, either individual or team, resulted in their loss. Would their loss signify that God has abandoned them? Do they think those other guys who won are more godly, holier and therefore more deserving of God's munificence?

Some have described our nation as a "warrior culture" where winning means kicking butt. We went to war in Iraq with religious fervor. G. W. Bush at one time called it a "crusade" and one general, William Boykin while in full uniform in front of a religious congregation, declared from the pulpit that his god was a real god. Winning, therefore, means God is on our side.

G. W. Bush put over 4,300 U.S. military in body bags, killing and maiming tens of thousands of Iraqi men, women and children for no reason other than a sick belief that we are morally and spiritually superior and mandated by God to kill innocent people, especially those "swarthy-skinned" folks as Ann Coulter described people from the Middle East.

No wonder that football especially has become the nation's number one spectator sport. Who wants to watch a baseball game in a park where players wear caps and runners go home when you can vicariously defeat your enemy in a War Memorial Stadium where football players wear helmets and penetrate the end zone? Praise be to God.”

Limbaugh, however, may get his wish. Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has been threatening war with Iran for years and now that he is Prime Minister he can afford to snub the U.S. and practically blackmail us into assisting him in an all-out war in the Middle East.

As you observed, Iran is no pushover like the broken country of Iraq when Bush bombed, invaded and occupied it going on 7 years. Iraq had no navy, did not launch a single aircraft or missile in its defense and its army consisted of 70% Shia conscripts who threw down their weapons shortly after Bush's invasion in March 2003.

Iran has enough conventional weapons to block shipping in the Persian Gulf and long-range missiles that can easily reach Israel and other surrounding countries. But, Limbaugh and most of the Republican hard right-wing zealots and racists don't care about the consequences. Like so many traitors and cowards in the Republican Party, they always find ways to justify war as long as it's against people of color.”

Israeli Air Force has no long-range bombers. Their F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft cannot attack Iran without multiple refuelling over Iraq or Saudi Arabia or any other Muslim nation they need to fly over to reach Iranian targets.”

Left out are the younger working people who will be hurt even more if payroll taxes are increased to cover the new Medicare enrollees.

Many people weighing in on this idea are saying it is a dream come true for the health insurance industry which is more than happy to shed an age group that increasingly experiences health problems and higher medical costs.

We know the Republicans have been saying "No!" to anything and everything proposed by the Democrats and President Barack Obama because they understand that the Democrats' failure is a guarantee that the GOP will take back control of one or both houses of congress in 2010. The immediate threat from the Taliban, we've been told, is not that they are plotting to come to the U.S. and blow up Wal Mart, but mainly to control the numerous provinces and tribal areas while leaving Hamid Karzai in control of Kabul where he's seen as nothing more than the mayor of that city.

For sure, al Qaeda has no stomach to take on the military might of the U.S. army and marines so they simply merge into the civilian populations and conduct their terrorist training in other countries such as Pakistan, Somalia and other vulnerable and unstable countries.

Russ Feingold is right. All we are doing now is pouring more men and taxpayer money into nation building in a country that has 28% literacy rate (13% for women) and a life expectancy of under 45 years. Afghanistan is not a war of necessity as Barack Obama and his military advisors claim. We cannot fight terrorism worldwide with uniformed military that is cumbersome to move around from one country to another and expect terrorists will show their faces and challenge us.

What is happening to America today is exactly what happened to the old Soviet Union which spent so much of their resources on military buildups that they ended up with a collapsed economy and a broken government.”

“Eye, you may be right. There are some similarities, however. Though there were uniformed Viet Cong troops much of South Viet Nam was full of snipers and civilan saboteurs who resented foreigners invading and occupying their country. Much of the same resentment is shared by the Afghani population against the U.S.

The policy near the end of the Viet Nam War was called "Vietnamization," meaning we lowered U.S. troop presence by training the South Vietnamese army (ARVN) to defend their country. Most threw down their arms when the VC overran the country.

The safe haven enjoyed by much of the Taliban and Al Qaeda remnants allows them to train inside Pakistan's borders in much the same way the VC used the Ho Chi Minh Trail inside Laos to funnel supplies and troops.

Agent Orange, used to defoliate the rice paddies supposedly to deny hiding areas to the VC, resulted in the destruction of crops and, as you know, caused widespread sickness and cancer among civilians and U.S. troops. Who knows how man strange diseases many of our troops have been inflicted with in both Iraq and Afghanistan? This war is a mess and I see no solution other than to leave it to the Afghanis who fight each other as much as they do foreign armies.”

“If you think fixating on ACORN will get the GOP back in power in 2010 you are pretty limited for issues that matter to the American people. All the money you are banking on getting from the big pharmaceutical and health insurance companies will not put your party back in power either because the only message you have is NO!

What exactly are the Republicans offering as an alternative to health care for 47 million people? How do they intend to end the war in Afghanistan? How are they going to turn the economy around if all they offer are tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of the population and ignoring any oversight or regulation of the Ponzi Scheme hucksters and swindlers on Wall Street?

You also have it backwards. The voters are the ones who listened to both party's candidates, then rejected McCain-Palin and repudiated the 8 years of dysfunctional, failed policies of Bush-Cheney. Obama won the election with 364 electoral college votes and 62,926,158 popular votes. He did not need 5 partisan, right-wing ideologues on the Supreme Court to step in and install him in the White House. Vox populi, vox Dei.”

“Afghan War More Difficult Than Iraq? Who woulda thunk it? The question is why, after 8 years in a country where the literacy rate is 28% (13% for women) and a life expectancy under 45-years-old, haven't we figured this out long ago?

I read recently where it costs $400 per gallon for fuel because of the rough terrain where there are no roads to transport weapons, troops and supplies. Several months back I also read where the U.S. Army is now reviving the horse cavalry, training soldiers to use horses in inaccessible areas.

Are the American people, ready to support nation-building in Afghanistan for the next 20 years? Even if we increase the troop strength to 100,000 as the Russians did during their failed war in Afghanistan, what is it that we hope to gain? Especially, since we can't even repair our own country's millions of jobless, homeless, poverty-stricken citizens whose only health care is through emergency clinics that cost the taxpayers 3 times as much had they been insured.

Thanks, George W. Bush, for abandoning this war at the most crucial time when we had Osama bin Laden trapped in Tora Bora. You got your "cakewalk" war in Iraq instead. Now, American taxpayers are paying for both even though neither have been won by any stretch of the imagination.”

“"Who woulda thunk it?"

Apparently it is a big surprise for our recently elected military genius.

He had insisted on abandoning the war we can win (and practically won) and turn a low profile US presence in Afghanistan into a war, we are currently discussing.”

“As I stated in my post, the issue for Republicans is not the section that deals with abortion; the issue is Hate Obama 24/7. That is exactly what Republicans mean when they demand that any of their candidates running for office must pass their "purity" litmus test.

If that candidate doesn't go on record as sufficiently opposing Barack Obama on EVERY issue, then that Republican is not welcome in their tolerance for none pup tent and can expect no financial backing from the RNC. That's their sole priority -- not health care coverage.

This strategy is already backfiring. All the major polls show GOP public approval at 20% or less, hardly a groundswell of support for the obstructionist Party of No.”

“The abortion issue in the health care bill is only part of the Republican sideshow in their zeal to defeat the Democrats and Barack Obama. "Abortion rights supporters are now backing Reid's approach, which tries to preserve coverage for abortion while stipulating that federal dollars may not be used except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Catholic bishops say they can't accept that because it would let federally subsidized plans cover abortion."

Now, look at the Republican so-called health care bill which they rolled out last week confronting the abortion issue: Section 303 states, "The limitations established in sections 301 and 302 shall not apply to an abortion if "(1) the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest; or (2) in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself."

To the NARLC and Catholic bishops opposed to the health care bill: read the Republican plan and then pass judgment. But, we know the truth. The truth is, Republicans are the biggest hypocrites of all. Their sole priority is not to help the American people but to "break Obama and see him meet his Waterloo" as stated by arch Obama-haters like South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint.”

“Abortion is NOT health care..why should I give ANY money to ANYONE to finance ANY abortion that I am NOT legally obligated to finance?

Apart from that, if there is NOT a strong public option, close to medicare that enables folks to opt out of their employer based care..if it is not a good plan, and if it does not cut costs of both hospitalizations and prescriptions...

Then I will NOT vote next year...

I will stay home just like I did this past november.”
