“Adele, you hit it on the head! You only have to travel to Montrose from Delta and see the John Birch Society bill board demanding that we " Get US out of the UN" to realize that we live in a time warp here.
While most of the people here are kind, giving and generous to a fault, a small, vocal minority keeps things like land development regulations and civil rights from being enacted. This is the only place that I have lived ( and I've been here for 28 years) that has some of the most rabid right wing, anti progressive people that I've ever met, including Boston in the 70's and Kentucky, where a full page ad in the paper welcomed the Gm workers to Bowling Green, and invited them to the cross burning and picnic by the KKK. Hold on, we're becoming MUCH more progressive, the rumor has it that we may even vote for a Democrat next election cycle!”

“How will you get the Democrats and Republicans to vote for such a thing?
When Doctors pay $200,000 per year or more in malpractice fees, the trial lawyers are getting a good return on their investment in Democrats. Then the Democrats blame the market!
So we get the Republicans selling their souls to insurance companies (along with Democrats like Baucus). And the other Democrats selling out to the trial lawyers.
And then the sheeple swallow whatever they're told.
I'll bet most Democrat rank-and-file know nothing at all about the Medicare Trustees Report, which keeps stressing the looming financial disaster of Medicare -- signed by Obama's Treasury Secretary (hence the term sheeple)
As now structured, Medicare alone will consume 11.5% of GNP, which is higher than our ENTIRE health spending (public and private) only ten years ago. And that doesn't include Medicaid.
Give these same idiots our entire healthcare, and it will likely cost 30% of our entire economy. At the least.”

“You may be right, but the danger of restrict free speech is when the worm turns and the opposition returns to power, as unlikely a that now appears. Remember that the Republicans got G.W. Bush elected TWICE, do you want people like he and Cheney deciding on what is allowable speech?”
chaifreak replied on Sep 02, 2009 at 11:34:11
“They already restricted free speech by allowing Murdoch's empire to build a monopoly on "news", as well as restricting protestors at Bush appearances to "free speech" zones far removed and accusing protestors of endangering the country during a war. No one in government spurred the boycott of Beck's sponsors; it was all private citizens; therefore, this is not restriction of free speech.”

From New York City Shelters to New York State Farm

“I am deeply touched by this article. I, who was raised on a farm, have taken for granted the treasure that I had as a young person. I, too have experienced the sheer wonder of kids raised on the sidewalks when they, for the first time witnessed the wonder of open space and nature in all it's glory.
It speaks to the bankruptcy of our culture when a kid has never dug into the soil, has never planted a seed and never eaten anything that has not been wrapped in plastic, and transported thousands of miles before being displayed for days before being bought and then prepared as food. Being connected to the production of our sustenance is a much greater good than just feel good however, it gives us an appreciation for the environment, and also our humanity. Teaching these kids that polluting our planet and allowing toxins to ruin the environment is not only wrong but should be abhorrent is much easier if they have an inkling of the miracle of how this planet works. Sparking curiosity and wonder can do nothing but good for all kids.
The Slow Food and locavore movement is starting a change in how we perceive our relationship to the world, and can do nothing but good. Please support any education in this area!”

We get what they sow, the energy industry is raping the western slope of Colorado, and the County Commission of Mesa County (Grand Junction) is acting as a cheerleader for the energy companies. We cannot even get a disclosure of what's in the Fracc'ing fluid that is being pumped into the ground in huge quantiies to help relaease the natural gas here. The energy companies are lobbying to drill for gas within 1/4 mile of the Rulison nuclear site, where a nuclear bomb was exploded underground in the 70's as a research project to find a peaceful use of nuclear power.

Do you not realize that every denial of coverage raises the profitability of the insurance company? What makes you think that an insurance company whose bottom line is dependent on limiting the payout of benefits will do a better job than someone whose job is not dependent on denying coverage for as many cases as possible?”
