Can the Obama White House Course-Correct in Time to Avoid Hitting the 2010 Iceberg?

“No, no, no. As the other person responding to you says, she is a bigger hawk than Obama, and her health care proposals in the primary included mandated insurance with wages attached if the person would not pay up. My hunch is that he only wants to be a one time president anyway. He's got his legacy of being the first black president, and he stands to make a lot of money once he leaves office. She may become his vp to succeed him, but even if not, he will resign to make room for her to run. I often wonder if that wasn't the deal that came out of the nearly stalemated primary.”

“I used to think Hillary would make a great President, she certainly has more balls than most and more than Obama, no disrespect, just a different style, he's definitely got a feminine side, however, the terrible truth is she's a hawk, and she would be balls out for this war. She has already shown she would cave to the insurance companies. So no, guys, not Hillary!”

Do you ask the people who like Bono and U2 to buy a guitar and start a band?
Let me know. Don't bother. I already know.”

“Wow, Gator.
I'm close to agreeing with you here. But honestly, admit it: Nirvana has not had the reach of U2, to say nothing of the Beatles.
I've always been a Stones fan. But I've really got to give U2 pride of place: Bono & Company have made entire careers, and fortunes, out of one song, which they simply write new lyrics for occasionally, cut and paste, and then put out albums of these transparent and indistinguishable variations.
Can a band sue itself for plagiarism? If one could, U2 would be it.
Nice move on the wall thing, Bono. Maybe you should have consulted your old Pink Floyd albums before you stepped squarely in this pile of your own doodoo.”

“Robert -- are you sure you've actually listened to much U2? If you have, then you haven't listened very carefully.
What they created was an unmistakeable timbre -- largely because Edge played guitar in a way that nobody had ever heard before, but many have imitated since. That's what made their early songs sound consistent, but, man you really don't have to listen that hard to much of their stuff to conclude that what you wrote is nonsense.
U2 developed stylistically over the years in a way few bands do. Radiohead comes to mind, although Radiohead have done it even more radically. (The Stones, on the other hand. Well, they've been treading water stylistically for decades. And I like the Stones.)
Boy and War sound like they were recorded by a completely different band than the one that did Achtung Baby and Zooropa, which sounds like a completely different band than released No Line on the Horizon. I am NOT the world's biggest U2 fan, but I fail to understand how you can give a crap about music and be so dismissive of them.”

I hope many of us are being myopic. I've never wanted to be very wrong about anything so much in my sixty years. May we have reason to tout both you and Mr. Obama as nothing less than sheer geniuses, head and shoulders above the rest of us. Hopefully, we will get to beg your foregiveness. You do understand why we're so suspicious and cynical, don't you, Mr. Plouffe? I hope so, for all our sakes. I don't wish you a tougher job in 2012 than you had in 2008.”

Frank Rich: Obama At The Precipice In Afghanistan
Commented Sep 28, 2009 at 15:16:00 in Politics
“The "experts" and the "deciders" will likely continue look at all the things we did wrong in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, and sadly ask ourselves the wrong question: How can we do these things right?
Instead of asking ourselves the only question that matters: What did we do right in Vietnam?
Answer? We "lost." We left.
The results? The domino-theory collapse of South-East Asia?
No.
35 years after the "fall" of Vietnam, Vietnam has long been an unthreatening, if not peaceful, country, where Americans among others live, work, invest and make money.
The Vietnamese solved, and are continuing to solve their own problems. Which they were able to start doing once the one problem they couldn't solve went away: us.
Can we get this lesson through our thick skulls? How long will it take?
And what are our chances? Slim.
Why? Because as long as geniuses like John McCain and Dick Cheney can make careers and fortunes out of their dreams of glory while they bequeath the rest of us their nightmares, too many military officers and politicians will put their careers before the well-being of those they "serve."”
