What a tragedy.”

“If Bono and U2 don't have to know how to do what I do for a living to be able to claim to write music for me, then I don't have to have a band, or play an instrument, to comment on them.

Do you ask the people who like Bono and U2 to buy a guitar and start a band?

Let me know. Don't bother. I already know.”

“Wow, Gator.

I'm close to agreeing with you here. But honestly, admit it: Nirvana has not had the reach of U2, to say nothing of the Beatles.

I've always been a Stones fan. But I've really got to give U2 pride of place: Bono & Company have made entire careers, and fortunes, out of one song, which they simply write new lyrics for occasionally, cut and paste, and then put out albums of these transparent and indistinguishable variations.

Can a band sue itself for plagiarism? If one could, U2 would be it.

Nice move on the wall thing, Bono. Maybe you should have consulted your old Pink Floyd albums before you stepped squarely in this pile of your own doodoo.”

DocManhattan replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 11:34:01

“Robert -- are you sure you've actually listened to much U2? If you have, then you haven't listened very carefully.

What they created was an unmistakeable timbre -- largely because Edge played guitar in a way that nobody had ever heard before, but many have imitated since. That's what made their early songs sound consistent, but, man you really don't have to listen that hard to much of their stuff to conclude that what you wrote is nonsense.

U2 developed stylistically over the years in a way few bands do. Radiohead comes to mind, although Radiohead have done it even more radically. (The Stones, on the other hand. Well, they've been treading water stylistically for decades. And I like the Stones.)

Boy and War sound like they were recorded by a completely different band than the one that did Achtung Baby and Zooropa, which sounds like a completely different band than released No Line on the Horizon. I am NOT the world's biggest U2 fan, but I fail to understand how you can give a crap about music and be so dismissive of them.”

Frank Rich: Obama At The Precipice In Afghanistan

“The "experts" and the "deciders" will likely continue look at all the things we did wrong in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, and sadly ask ourselves the wrong question: How can we do these things right?

Instead of asking ourselves the only question that matters: What did we do right in Vietnam?

Answer? We "lost." We left.

The results? The domino-theory collapse of South-East Asia?

No.

35 years after the "fall" of Vietnam, Vietnam has long been an unthreatening, if not peaceful, country, where Americans among others live, work, invest and make money.

The Vietnamese solved, and are continuing to solve their own problems. Which they were able to start doing once the one problem they couldn't solve went away: us.

Can we get this lesson through our thick skulls? How long will it take?

And what are our chances? Slim.

Why? Because as long as geniuses like John McCain and Dick Cheney can make careers and fortunes out of their dreams of glory while they bequeath the rest of us their nightmares, too many military officers and politicians will put their careers before the well-being of those they "serve."”

“I had three thoughts listening to Ms. Boyle sing "Wild Horses."

1. Covering Jagger takes ovaries. Pulling it off takes talent.

2. Ms. Boyle has the voice and the heart and soul for Jazz and Blues. I hope she does work these genres.

3. Duet: Susan Boyle and KD Lang.

I still tear up when I listen to this woman sing. Something breaks through.”

“So, you're claiming that people like Kerry and Kennedy are trying to work to protect other Americans as a front for their "real" agenda, which is to avoid taxes?

First of all, Kerry had to submit financial statements and tax reports when he ran for President. I sure don't remember anyone saying either he or his wife, who is far richer, were not paying taxes. It certainly would have been a big story.

Second, these people have enough money so that paying taxes is not going to make them poor.

Third, I wasn't talking about just paying taxes, which is what your argument focuses on. Perhaps I should have been more specific, but I was addressing the current situation with health care.

People with tens of millions of their own money are not selling out to insurance and pharmaceutical companies for hundreds of thousands or even millions of campaign contribution dollars. That's my point.”

Why?

Because they can't be bought. They've already got theirs.

Think about it. Who gets bought? The legislators who are not rich.”

“Problem is . . . THEY ARE A SPECIAL INTEREST . . believe me . . . they look out for themselves. You know, all those little hidden wording in the tax code . . . that helps them avoid the taxes the little people pay. And that's not a joke. Its the truth. These people don't pay taxes. Doesn't matter what party they are in. If you have enough money you can purchase the kind of shelters that avoid taxation. It's the "working rich" that pay . . . small business owners . . . farmers . . . people who actually create jobs and need working capital. They pay the biggest taxes. Not that list of people we just read.”

“I can't agree nicole, either with you or with Cycadeoidea.

It's already racism 24/7, because that is precisely what the Republicans are up to. And it's not going to stop.

Check back 6 months, or a year from now. We're going to be exactly where we are now. This IS the Republican and special interest long-term strategy. They are not going to let up, until they neuter this administration, and get back in power. The President and the Administration do not have to help these people.

Obama's platform looks more and more like "let's be polite," rather than "let's get something done."

The administration will not stop what's going on by pretending it's something other that what it is.

Neither will the rest of us.”
