“It serves nothing to pay these guys news time. I'm sure we're all well aware that there are tasteless/callous people in the world, and no amount of editorial outrage (feigned, all-caps or otherwise) negates the moral culpability of republishing their photo and furthering the statement they've made. They've sought attention, and now you've gone and given it to them.”

Korean Kat on Oct 28, 2013 at 21:12:44

“You mean the "moral culpability" also known as doing their job as journalists? Your illiberal brand of paternalism led to the absurdity of the Danish Mohammed cartoons being suppress in most English-language media, even when they were a major world event. Anything "offensive" should be republished for the public to make up its mind unless it violates the law (e.g. child porn) or actively endangers someone. Neither of those issue apply here and HP is completely justified in showing us the costumes (which I find awful).”

“"...because she's employed by a McDonald's franchise, which does not pay for the McResource service, she is not eligible for consultation."

Kind of a flimsy helpline then, isn't it? Especially since McDonald's makes bank from its franchising. In a Forbes article in 2010 called "McDonald's gets fat returns...", franchised locations apparently have profit margins for the company of about 88%, as opposed to the 23% its own stores take. It noted a trend that McD's was subsequently shelling off its corporately-owned spots as franchises, which I can't imagine has changed any in the past three years.”

“I used to take it that way as well, but the expression wouldn't really make sense, grammatically. In this case, 'Indian' is the adjective describing the noun, 'giver', rather than the recipient of any implied giving. Historically though, it saw common usage during the 18th century, according to etymonline.com (under the entry for 'Indian'):

"An Indian gift is a proverbial expression, signifying a present for which an equivalent return is expected. [Thomas Hutchinson, 'History of Massachusetts Bay', 1765]"”
