“It's not the "literal" truth, any more than the standard American history about peaceful love-filled thanksgivings between pilgrims and Native Americans, but it does introduce concepts that are true in American history. One of which is that Europeans spread disease among Native Americans sometime deliberately.

You are concentrating on the minutia instead of recognizing the bigger picture.”

“Oh, so we should let them be brainwashed into ignorance? I think kids are able to handle a lot more quote on quote "offensive" and "controversial" material (which incidentally turns out to be true) than we give them credit for.
Telling children the truth about American history is a far cry from exposing them to pornography or graphic violence.”

Pem3 replied on Nov 21, 2009 at 02:03:05

“And what part of that play was historically accurate portrayal of the Pilgrams' and there time period?
If I found any one exposing children to Pornography they would not be around to do it a second time, rest asured.
When you want to expose children to something wait until they are old enough to understand what they a be told to do.
We should not use children to express our views.”

“You are right, but does the understanding that boys are more likely to commit crimes lead you to believe that crimes committed by females are more forgivable, and that males are less forgivable, even if the specific crime is "equal" in it's severity?

It seems to me that societies recognition of females as the more "peaceful" gender kind of lets women off the hook when they do commit violent actions, and we are more likely to write boys off for eternity if they make wrong choices (even excluding violent activities)”

“Just wondering if their would be as many empathetic comments if the killer was a fifteen year old boy? Or if we've been so conditioned to believe that females are incapable of violent thoughts or motivations that we can't believe that a girl of this age might actually be a sociopath capable of murder?”

riona replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 10:21:11

“Obviously they are not incapable. But, it's more common that boys commit violent crimes. Probably because of the way they are socialized and hormones. Who knows. Maybe there are just some bad apples out there.”

“I would feel the same no matter the sex. I believe children are very much victims of their environment and how they are treated. Children that are seriously abused and neglected are very much at risk for developing anti-social behaviors.

My heart breaks for both children in this situation. As much as this girls actions horrify me, I cannot wonder what she has lived through to cause her to become so damaged.”

The fact that you leaped to that conclusion, is condescending, and at least as insulting as anything I said to either you or "Saint James."

In other words, you insulted me with your condescension prior to my characterization of you as a ninny.”

“Would you argue that the OP had a more comprehensive understanding of the situation than I do?
The point is that he characterized the Somalis as "killing every living thing" within their borders, which (at least in terms of the marine life which is germane to this discussion) couldn't be further from the truth.
Unless you are trying to tell me that the Somali fishermen, or Somali pirates have more impact on the marine habitat than the international commercial fishers who exploit Somalia's political discord, or the polluters who destroy it's marine life, I'm not in dispute with you.

In short your point is neither relevant to what i said nor is it contradictory, so you've only succeeded in making yourself appear an ass.”

Yank in France replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 10:33:42

“ST, please just calm down a little bit; I did NOT say or even infer that you were condoning criminal behavior at all. I absolutely do NOT believe that is what you were saying.
And I agree that there is a link between poverty and criminal or violent behavior, but my point is that that link is not as linear or as causal you seem to believe.
We are talking about honest differences in perception and analysis. I am not here to get anyone upset, whether they agree with me or not.
Have a good day.”

Yank in France replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 01:53:48

“Your "reality check" is a joke. The original post stated "I am sure the Somalians (sic) have destroyed and eradicated every living creature for miles around their border" and you come along to defend that odious comment?

I've read about the Somali pirates and they, like other criminals, are attracted to piracy for the money women and adventure - and the lack of other opportunities. This is caused, at least in part, by the fact that their waters have been exploited and polluted for years by other countries.

Despite your self-righteous comments I wasn't excusing the behavior of the pirates, but merely recognizing that the previous posters comments were FACTUALLY WRONG.

Then you came along like a self-righteous ninny and inserted yourself as if you had something relevant to say. Butt out.”

StJames replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 21:30:36

“In an attempt to relieve you of your ignorance, I shall point out that this is not a private conversation between you and whomever. If someone misses your point it is not necessary for you to become belligerent in order to make your case. Nor do you have the right to tell anyone to 'butt out'

If there is a self-righteous ninny on this thread, it's you.”

Joethepauper replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 18:21:22

“I'm with you, STParker. Most of the people commenting on this story don't have a clue. They just think the Somalis were bored one day and said: "Let's go a pirating....Arrrgh!"

I'd like to know what the Maersk was hauling. Maybe the reason it was excluded from the story is the same reason it has been attacked multiple times. The most important part of the story is the cargo. Without that, it's just : Pirates=bad Maersk=good

If we found out, for instance they were dumping benzene or supplying warlords with weapons (especially if those weapons weren't made in the good ol' U.S.A.), people might rethink their animosity.”

“That's a pretty ignorant comment to make. THe fact is that the Somalis have turned to piracy because their fishing waters HAVE been devastated by other nations who infringe on Somali water rights and dump toxic chemicals in the area.”

Yank in France replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 10:26:07

“I find your answer less than satisfying. Somaia is a poor country, but it has also be struggling with civil war for over 20 years now, and that is not the fault of shipping companies or foreign fisherman. There are real problems there, and it is true that foreign fishermen surely collect more fish than do the primitive Somali boats, but if that were a justification for piracy, then the whole world should target Japanese and Spanish vessels for these are the biggest fish haulers and consumers (per capita) in the world!!
In point of fact, the sea pirates are only doing what the land "pirates" have been doing for years in Somalia: sacking and pillaging. The only difference is that the booty is bigger in the sea and the resistance softer.”

StJames replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 10:07:09

“So the millions they have collected in ransoms hasn't even begun to cover the enormous profits they earned as fishermen? And none of the pirates are living like kings while other Somalis still starve? Take a reality check ...this is criminal behavior and needs to be treated as such.”
