Miriam Carey's Family Says DC Chase Suspect Was Not Delusional

Miriam Carey's Family Says DC Chase Suspect Was Not Delusional

Commented Oct 7, 2013 at 16:49:27 in Crime

“The Australian incident and the WashDC incident have nothing in common. The author was speeding away in the dark and stopped when he reached a lighted area. The DC driver was crashing into barriers, driving recklessly down city streets, using her car as a weapon against others, and then even when stopped and surrounded still wouldn't comply with officers' instructions. Sad situation indeed, but not unexpected results.”

“No, don't know the specifics of each program. I don't have an issue with helping people get through tough times and to rise out of poverty. I do have a problem with people who won't try to better themselves, keep having babies they can't afford, and take on an entitled attitude that they deserve to be taken care of by others. Do I know about being poor? Probably a lot more than you. I grew up in a tiny rented house with a kerosene heater, fans for cooling, no hot water and very limited money. Father was disabled, mother worked for minimum-wage and no public assistance. Parents didn't believe we were "poor enough" not to take care of ourselves. We ate what we grew, fished for or bought; wore clothes from Goodwill and hand-me-downs from friends. We three kids were required to behave, be respectful, study/read every night, get part-time jobs during high school, pay our own college costs, go to church, help others and be productive people. As adults we contribute money to our church, schools, charities, people in emergency situations and over-tip waiters and other service people. We sponsor several kids each year for church camp and give away clothing, household items, etc., to thrift shops instead of selling them ourselves. I've never been a liar, as I've never had any reason to lack integrity just because I grew up poor.”

GaPony on Oct 1, 2013 at 17:42:01

“I think alot of us have known hard times. Maybe our parents got some help the children didn't know about and maybe they didn't. We are lucky enough to be living in a time where the country, through our representatives, believes in caring for the least among us. A christian value. I don't don't know what many people would do in a vastly more expensive and complicated world that ever more urbanized. Its not so simple to grow our own food when living in an apratment someplace. I don't believe being on assistance means parent's or their children are lazy or irresponsible, especially in a slowly recovering economy. Charity isn't the same as assistance. Churches, the biggest recipient of charitable government programs are overwhelmed. We have these safety net programs because there is a real need, not because the government wants to waste money. Food stamps (SNAP) is good for $1.41 per meal. That isn't steak money. WIC is a tightly controlled program that allows purchase of very specific items. TANF, with few exceptions is limited in duration to two years and has a work or education requirement. Its not the old welfare system. I don't like paying extra taxes for these programs, but they are needed. Their combined cost to taxpayers only about 1/3 as much as the farm subsidies and big oil giveaways. Being poor isn't a crime, nor is it a reflection of a person's worth and judgement is the domain of a greater power.”

“Come on down to Fla and visit any Walmart and check out the food being purchased by some people with various welfare benefit cards. Grocery carts full of steaks, big roasts, huge frozen bags of shrimp, big containers of powdered baby formula, multiple cartons of Tropicana OJ, cases of energy drinks, cosmetics, OTC drugs, etc. Then go out to the parking lot and watch it all being loaded into tricked-out trucks, huge SUVs, and other expensive cars. I mentioned it to a neighborhood detective and he said it's a long-running scam that's widespread. The food and sundries are purchased for resale to locally owned restaurants, ethnic markets, flea markets, and traded for drugs. The items for resale have to be name brand products, not Walmart brands, which means higher-priced items as well. The powdered baby formula can be used to cut drugs, mostly cocaine, heroin and meth. I was rather suspicious of his answer. Well, about a month later there was a multi-county task force arresting gangs of people for Federal welfare fraud.

FYI, I'm an Independent ~ vote person, not party. Fraud is fraud no matter one's political persuasion.”

GaPony on Oct 1, 2013 at 15:21:01

“You obviously don't know the difference between TANF, SNAP and WIC. Beyond that, you see what you want to see. You believe what you want to believe. BTW... baby formula can also be used to feed BABIES! Sure, there may be some fraud, statistically very little, but you are most certainly a liar.”

Also, on both partners if necessary to avoid a pregnancy that one can't afford financially or handle mentally. Walmart and Target both sell birth control pills for around $10 a month ~ less than a carton of beer. Enough with the excuses for irresponsible people.”

“Please drop the birth control issue - you can purchase generic birth control pills at at Target or Walmart for about $10 a month. (Cheaper than a carton of beer.) I agree with all Americans having affordable healthcare. Best to pick the correct fights.”

mckellygirl on Oct 1, 2013 at 02:15:47

“So not true, and so does not matter even if it is true. Some folks can't spare $10 for a prescribed medication. Do you know how many women are prescribed birth control to treat health and reproductive issues? MANY. It is a prescribed medication from a doctor to a patient. I am one of them and I suffer grave consequences without a birth control prescription. How dare anyone interfere with legal medication prescribed by a doctor to a patient? I am sick to death of discovering we need to keep fighting battles for women, voters, and workers in this country that I thought we actually won decades ago.”

“Lame argument mwas97 ~ generic birth control pills are not expensive. Target and Walmart sell them for about $10 a month. If you remember Sandra Fluke, who was the third year Georgetown Law Student that testified before Congress, she later admitted that she didn't know about those stores offering low-cost birth control pills.

“True that they're not opting out of ACA - but they're still getting the same Federal-paid premium credit they'd get with the normal Federal employees health plan. At their salary levels, under the straight ACA rules they would not be eligible for any tax credit at all. So, they are not playing by the same rules as regular taxpayers.”

“Extend funding for a week or so and wait to see what happens when the ACA online system starts tomorrow. If the system works with minor flaws, fund the government without the ACA delay. If the ACA is a huge mess, fund the government with a one-year delay on the whole system. No sense standing up such a huge system that's not ready. Talk about wasting taxpayer money ~ that will be a total mess trying to keep a new system up, while making changes to it constantly. How many more tech people will have to be hired for that double task? A lot! Well, maybe a good way to expand IT employment .... ☺”
