“Shaming the mortgage companies -- you have got to be kidding. I thought maybe it was just a bad headline but, no, it's there in the article. Shaming them? It gets better everyday.”

“That is because Rahm and Obama took it off the table at the start -- the people didn't Try to keep up. Read the polls. One thing I have followed every single bit of and read every single article on is health care reform. And Rahm is indeed an architect of NAFTA. Do some research, like the rest of us. And, no, I am not a diehard Clinton supporter. I applaud him for the things he did well. On NAFTA, no, I do not support him on. By the way, I happen to be an independent. I am not a repub or a dem. And no, I will not be re-voting for Obama in 2012.”

“Wishing happy birthday to this creep? A lead proponent and architect of NAFTA? Lead proponent, along with buddy Obama to take Medicare for All off the table in health care and ensure their top campaign contributors, private insurers, a long and prosperous life on the back of the American middle class? This guy is no friend of the middle class or the poor.”

FYI, Medicare for All was never *on* the table. Try to keep up.”

“Thank you. I watched the entire interview. Good stuff. Richard Clark's book has to be put on my must-read list now. I was already well aware of the stories of numerous workers from the Clinton Administration trying to get the information about Bin Laden to the Bush WH and the Bush WH simply did not want to deal with reports or intel from the Clinton Administration. This was talked about extensively shortly after 9-11 on NPR. These were not high-ranking politicos. These were hired people that work in the trenches doing data analysis, putting reports together, doing research, etc.”

“Jon Stewart did one of his famous then-and-now things with Cheney several months ago, and it was all made crystal clear. Cheney advised Bush 1 not to go into Iraq and after Saddam Hussein, but after 9-11 it was a different story altogether.”

“That's exactly why this report is coming out now. There is nothing earth-shattering in this report that anybody with a brain didn't know about years ago. I remember discussing this same thing with friends before the Iraq war started. They didn't want to catch Bin Laden. The reasons could be many. But this report coming out now is to simply justify what is now Obama's war. It is still a Vietnam redux or worse.”

“It's already happening. The Army was having a very difficult time meeting recruitment goals in the last four years of the Bush Administration. Now they are having no problem at all. People are desperate and they are playing the war lottery. The unemployment rate among young people is one of the most dismal and we know among AA males it's disproportionately high. As long as not too much is done to ease unemployment it will be almost akin to a draft.”

SGGrossman replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 21:59:33

“This ugly fact of life has been called the "poverty draft," and, like the formal, "legal" draft, sends mainly the un- and underemployed to the front lines of wars that, since World War II, probably (or at least, arguably) should not have been waged, by the U.S., at least, in the first place--wars for oil and Empire; wars to prevent the "fall" of "dominoes" that never were; invasions, interventions, endless occupations; wars that, in the present period, for as far ahead as I can see, probably *should* be refused, resisted, prevented and stopped. Socially (and class) conscious (and antiracist) activists, while opposing the kind of formal draft that send our youth at gun-point into the brutality of military training and the soul-death of unjust war, must be simultaneously committed to full employment, educational reform, health care reform, job training and retraining, and the defense of "living wage" and livable welfare to ameliorate the ravages of the "poverty draft" until we can--as we must--build a national and international consensus to take war "off the table."”

often times I wonder if the anti-American sentiments in the middle east stems more from our tacit support of those who squander that region's resources thereby leaving the masses to live in abject poverty....

moreover I think those in power actually foment these anti-american sentiments to distract the poor while the rich build absurd, wasteful and useless "temples of opulence"”

“My favorite part of "Sicko" was the Cuban trip. I think that says it all. The amazing thing is that with real universal health care we wouldn't be sliding back to the 19th century any longer. This is one of the secrets for American producing goods for Americans -- items of value that last. This last is very important. I have a 19-inch SONY that is at least 15 years old. I know that anything new I would be forced to buy may cost the same as this one did new, or less, but it will not last like this one has. Likewise with my Kenmore washer and dryer, 20 years old, never had a service contract and have never needed one. This is not what I hear from people who have new appliances. They're not built to last. They're built for a relatively quick turnover -- five years maybe.

The sad thing is that with my stagnant income I need appliances that last -- really last.”

“"Tommy Hilfiger $99 bomber jackets, marked down from $450"

Another good example. Someone argues with me all the time about how we can't afford to make clothes over here. Quite a markdown and at $99 they are still making a profit? Maybe not a killing, but a profit.

Get health care benefits off the backs of employers and give incentives to bring these jobs back to the U.S. There is no reason we cannot make and sell our own clothing, as we used to. Stop using slave labor in China and elsewhere so these companies can make a killer profit.”

“Knock on wood I have had my Kenmore heavy duty washer and dryer for 20 years -- never a problem. The old gas boiler laste 15 years without a problem before it gave out and was condemned (I really don't know how old it was as it was here when we moved here). The new has needed service twice in the last five years and I was told by Keyspan that it was very reliable. It's a Trane.

I have heard from other people who had to finally give up old appliances after years and years of reliable service and the new ones they bought did not come close to this degree of reliability. I believe there is an in-built obsolescence, as GM and others were doing with cars. Five-year lifespan. I believe this is also done to sell service agreements, which are quite expensive.

And, of course, unless you're making a really nice income I believe most people want to buy an appliance that is reliable and long-lasting, especially when it comes to big-ticket items like washers, dryers, refrigerators.”
