I am glad the Reps did not vote for that piece 'o carp reform ... now the Dems own it. They get all the credit if, somehow it does some good ... and they get all the blame for when it fails.”

“In those whose minds are shallow and unreachable, yes the dems will take credit or blame. For those who care about facts and reality, there are only 58 dems in the Senate, not enough to control the government. Furthermore, some of those dems are little more than dinos. Republicans who ran as dems to gain power. They don't have any real democratic agenda.”

“Hardly. If it turns out to be good, the Repubs will be swept out for making us wait so long and if it's bad, the Dems can easily complain that it was watered down in an effort to win over a handful of Repub votes, none of which was forthcoming. As a result, better, stronger, more progressive Dems will be elected instead of the yellow bellied, blue mongrels that keep thinking that trying to appeal to Repubs will ever help them. Ultimately they'll find that the Repubs only use them to stop them from accomplishing anything and that they'll face strong primaries from the let and if they survive that, the Repubs will always rather have a real Repub that'll give them the numbers instead of one masquerading as a Dem that keeps the balance of power on the Left, even if they sabotage it from the inside. Ultimately, the Repubs are doing themselves no real favors because the public still doesn't trust them more than Dems.”

“So tell me, exactly how much is mankind contributing towards Global Warming vs. the natural warming? How come climatologists are baffled over the last 10 year moratorium in global temperature rise?”
Johnagain replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 13:29:58
“I can't tell you exactly how much mankind has contributed to GW, but climate scientists can probably provide a good estimate. As for the baffling 10 year moratorium on global temperature rise, it doesn't exist. Temperature has continued to rise, with a slight plateau after the hottest year on record, 1998.
Again, please try to understand the difference between weather and climate. The climate changes that we are considering here are taking place over a time frame that is in the hundreds of years. The industrial revolution, when humans really started to burn fossil fuels at a rapid pace, started around 300 years ago, give or take a few years. We're seeing the results now of putting 90 million tons/day of combusted carbon into the air.”

“What actions are you comparing against? Bush started two wars, declared victory, and then never ended them. He heavily promoted subprime lending, the domino that toppled our financial system, through his "homeownership for everyone" policy. He handed out tax rebates to help offset rising energy costs, reversing Clinton's budget upswing. Obama hasn't even come close to screwing us that badly and, unlike Bush, has done a couple of things right, including having a strategy in Afghanistan, something we never got from Bush in seven years of war. Yes, when you measure against Bush, the metric of comparison is so low that even having a plan counts as an achievement. You want to hold Obama to a standard, try Clinton.”

Oh, but remember, Saddam's invisible WMD was the REAL threat. Let's make snap decisions on that, but we need to debate climate change for longer than it would take to actually solve the problem.
Typical "fiscal conservatives"- they'd rather spend ten times as much fighting legislation than it would take to simply comply with the law and solve a problem.”

hp blogger David Fiderer replied on Dec 08, 2009 at 11:52:55
“Both Ellsberg and the hacker broke the law, so they were subject to prosecution. The critical difference, of course, is that the NY Times actually vetted Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers as a quality check to assure that the contents were not reported in a deceitful or misleading way. It was wrong for anyone to claim that Sarah Palin's hacked e-mails proved anything. Palin's credibility should be judged exclusively on the information that was not illegally obtained.
