Obese Man On American Airlines Flight (PICTURE, POLL)

“Hypothetically speaking then, if you develop a disease (usually) caused or exacerbated by smoking (I sincerely hope this never happens to you!), should you pay more in medical bills than someone with the same disease who did not?”

“I don't have a problem with that particular scenario, should it ever develop.
What I do have a problem with is being in a class of society that are the ONLY members having to pay extra costs for our choices. Particularily when the statistics prove that we are NOT the 'major cause of healthcare expenses' that everyone else supposedly absorbs. Obese people are.
Additionally, while I'm all for education (my husband is a teacher) and education is so very, very important - I resent the fact that the taxes I pay on cigarettes are what's paying for CHIPS funding. Why aren't these 'sin' taxes spread out amongst people whose 'sins' far outweigh social health costs of smokers ... like say those who purchase alcohol ... or fast food?
The day that happens is the day I'll stop griping about it.”

“I'm a bit torn on this issue. At first glance I had a similar reaction to everyone else: "If you get that fat you should be responsible for it!" Look at the picture closely and you'll notice that not only is this man quite a bit wider than the other passengers, he is also much, much taller. Even if he were of an "average" BMI, it is possible that his natural size would require him to occupy more than one seat. Somehow I feel as though someone who is not obese but requires two seats shouldn't be charged extra, but an obese person should. Why is that? Are we trying to punish people for what constitutes a sin in our minds? Have I just located a prejudice in my own mind? I am confused.”
RenePA replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 01:01:06
“Ask a cigarette smoker about being financially 'punished' for their sin.
Oh, that would be me.
So I'll just tell you flat out - I have ZERO sympathy for obese people, who suffer FAR more medical complications and increase FAR more costs on the healthcare system. Make them pay for two seats. It's a reality, a fact - they take up two seats.”

“Come now, don't let's heap scorn on this young woman simply because she's making light of her public persona for our enjoyment. So her parents got her into pageants and she was inarticulate at an inopportune time (at least) once - that doesn't say anything about who she is or what she believes or even about how smart she is. The fact is that she's made a funny video for our enjoyment and we should be grateful for that. This video certainly put a smile on my face! :)”

“At one time I wholeheartedly agreed with the thoughts you've expressed - that the segregationist element in society was dying of old age - but I've been proven wrong so often. Just a couple days ago the World of Warcraft forums (which are only available to paying players and overwhelmingly populated with people ages 15-30) had a thread about this very case and it became a bigot cesspool so quickly it would make your head spin. Hardly anybody took the side of common sense and the thread grew to enormous proportions before Blizzard, Inc had the opportunity to remove it. These are young people and they are openly and proudly bigoted in every way one can think. Don't get your hopes for the future up too high.”

“You are absolutely right. The tactic used to combat racial-awareness is: 'ignore it, and it will go away'. The version of America presented in the media and reality are two separate things. America is not post-racial, and IMHO, it never will be. The election of a Mulatto-President was largely symbolic, the way that most 'racial-progress' in America really is. Americans make grand outward gestures for integration so that they don't have to make real inward ones. The President may be bi-racial, but America's neighborhoods and schools are more segregated than ever, and it's not just in the South. Look at the demographi c-statisti cs for California. http://qui ckfacts.ce nsus.gov/q fd/states/ 06000.html Considering that the largest racial-group, (Whites), make up only 42.3% of the state's population, it is amazing to see how many counties have an ethnic-group that comprises over 70% of the population. In one the most liberal, if not the most liberal, states in America, with the most diversity, only 2.6% of the population is reported as being of more than one race. Whether most Americans realize it or not, we are replaying the final years of Austria-Hungary.”

Student Loans The "New Indentured Servitude": The Atlantic
Commented Oct 12, 2009 at 16:23:53 in Business
“I can't see how this student managed to rack up so much debt for a 2-year degree. I just finished mine and transferred to a state U with no debt at all and by the time I graduate with a B.S. I'll have about $5000 in debt (because I'm paying it down while I attend school). My parents are contributing nothing at all. Where did $26,000 go in two years?
If one could declare bankruptcy on a student loan, then the rates would be far too expensive for me. It looks like the WSJ probably picked the most debt-ridden graduate with the least education they could find in order to make the situation look the worst it possibly could. I just don't see why would they do that.”

“I was lucky to live cheap and go to juco my first two years. I was able to work (easy courses out of the way first...do esn't require as much study time) and partially pay for my school. I got decent fin aid. My 3rd year I transferred from an Iowa juco to Ohio State. Rent there was surprisingly cheap ($450/month for pretty decent two-bedroom apartment, 4 blocks from campus), and jobs were plentiful. Economy was better, and I was shocked to see how many good jobs there were (UPS, Nationwide Insurance, etc...). I borrowed $5,000 more for one year at OSU. I had a work-study job, but only worked 20 hours per week. I finally transferred to the U of Iowa to finish. Everything didn't transer, I had to take some things over. There weren't as many good jobs in Iowa City as there were in CBus. Rent was MUCh higher in IC. I ended up over very deep in debt. Part of it is my fault. Part of it is mafia-like rent in Iowa City, increased cost of student health care,...
The cost of college tuition increased 50% from 2000-2007 (what used to cost you $10,000 per year, now costed you $15,000). Health ins at the U of I was $50 or $60 per month in 2003. Now it's $130.. Clinton helped make it more affordable with Pell grants and such. Not sure how much Obama's doing/can do on that front.”
