“I have a family member--who happens to work for the gov.--who has saved many wild horses & burros. I also really like Willie. But do any of you people talking about the "abuse of wild horses" realize that they aren't native to this continent & are jacking up the ecosystem?”

“Horses have been living on this continent for nearly 500 years. In 1971, the United States Congress recognized Mustangs as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue to contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.”

I doubt wild horses do more damage to the environment than other livestock like cattle. Mustang herds live in arid areas which cattle cannot fully utilize due to the lack of water sources. Horses can obtain adequate nutrition from poorer forage than can cattle, surviving in areas where cattle will starve.

The dingo is not native to Australia either, yet it is an animal that is very much associated with and recognized as part of that country's heritage and environment.

So too is the wild horse/mustang a part of our American landscape and heritage.”
