The Republicans Win Big in California!

Commented Jul 21, 2009 at 14:44:32 in Politics

“State governments that don't anticipate downturns in the economy when they are legally required to balance their budget and don't have the option to borrow should voted out. What were they doing when housing prices were booming and taxes were flowing in, Did they not put anything aside. I have no problem taxing oil companies and it should be that way if they are using state natural resources to provide services needed here.

And if you hated the way education was going before then you are going to hate this

also, with all the state and federal budget pressures there is an anger against illegal aliens that is perculating all over the country.

It would help if they had majority rules by having a 2/3 majority to pass a budget it allows the few to control the many and not for the betterment for all in general.”

“First, Madoff should be behind bars and if you bother to do your homework you would know the government tried to put him behind bars when he was trying to hide assets but the Judge denied them.

Second, working class folk should be able to read the documents they were signing, this is what I use to call selective memory when I was Financial advisor. There would be no complaining if those houses went up in price and the people who didn't supposedly qualify resold them and made a lot of money. You see that is the bargain that everyone made in this crisis there was something in it for everyone and no one felt the need to say just because they are willing to give me this money should I take it. Pal every mortgage in America is required to put a HUD which tells you what your expenses are. There is a second document that says what your payments are. There is application that says what you are putting down for income. There is a document that tells you what your maximum payment will be and interest rate on a adjustable in big bold print. The fact is these people wanted the
house! The banks should have realized with everyone only offering these mortgages that as soon as the lock period ends all of these loans were at risk and should have offered a 30 yr fixed product for sub prime clients.

“a couple of things, free trade doesn't mean us lowering our barriers and them not lowering theirs. Just as we ask for tough direct diplomacy with our enemies we need the same urgency with our trading partners. NAFTA needs to be tweaked and the Columbian fta needs to include workers rights. But what organized Labor needs to recognize is you must organize in those countries. At the same time we have to realize that these other countries either subsidize directly or indirectly by paying for health care costs. Health care to me is the long term economic silver bullet that can structurely help everyone at every level.”

Organized labor does organize in Columbia. That's why 200 of those organizers were murdered this summer by the military. And the Congressional Republicans insisted on giving Columbia a green light to murder even more before they'd sign on to a bailout for Detroit. The Tax History Conservatives Want Us to Forget

Commented Nov 25, 2008 at 16:11:48 in Business

“Ms Friedland was right this is unprecedented. in '92 the deficit was the issue and after reality set it that was the underscore of his policy. His tax plan was passed to balance the budget and not spend. Let's also remember that Clinton benefited from an Incredible increase of productivity not his policies. Where he came in by balancing the budget it kept the dollar strong that kept the cost of capital low that spurred that economic growth with the productivity. Basically in '92 i was in college with a 2mb of ram and 60mb hard drive ya mega bytes. By the end of the Decade desktops were under a 1000 and the internet kept prices and materials low keeping inflation down coupled with low cost of capital not tax policy. Clinton could have lowered taxes, gone to a flat tax, or just cut spending but in the end it was the Internet and innovation that was the catalyst to economy. Norquist and the conservative are still trying sell bull over substance. because the republicans lost the '06 election is why the economy went down. Had nothing to do with the SEC changing reserve requirements from 12-1 to 40-1 or writing bad loans to poor people with poison pills dependent on them refinancing there leveraged houses that are now under water or adding 4 trillion on to the deficit? Really”

LeftRight replied on Nov 26, 2008 at 07:41:00

“Don't forget that Clinton policies helped create the dot-com bubble. Oh, and he did sign the bill that did away with Glass-Steagall. Of course, there are other gems, such as NAFTA, buried in the Clinton legacy. The erosion of America's manufacturing base accelerated under NAFTA.

For instance, the Chinese now provide America with a critical component in GPS and laser guided munitions. They are the sole-source provider. It would take America years to be able to replace that one component if the Chinese decided to use the component only for themselves. Oh, that too, was under a Clinton give-a-way.

So, before you start heralding the Democrats as the saviours they are not, examine their past actions.”

“I've heard your argument from several people recently. That those gay people should just shut up and go away and not make waves because we have more pressing issues to deal with first. Can you for oh, 30 seconds, imagine if YOU were one of those people being told by their nominal allies (i.e. people who support a generally progressive agenda) to keep their trivial civil rights complaints to themselves? As long as any segment of our society is denied full and equal rights under the law, America is failing to live up to its promise, and the idea that all those high ideals apply to everyone but gays is offensive (and no I'm not gay, I'm just passionate about the ideals our country is supposed to uphold).

Yes, we have many terribly pressing issues facing us, but as Obama pointed out during the campaign, a President is supposed to be able to handle more than one issue at a time. Our military is stretched to the breaking point, and countless gays with essential skills (e.g. fluency in Arabic and Farsi) have been drummed out of the military because of DADT. It won't be the very first thing on the new President's plate, but it will be on the table whether it's politically convenient or not.”

hp blogger Nathaniel Frank replied on Nov 18, 2008 at 19:11:19

“I think we can all agree that lifting the gay ban is not the top priority the U.S. is facing right now, and that economic and national security must be first out of the gate. I don't, however, think it is right to suggest that the firing of twelve thousand troops, including sixty Arabic linguists under an outdated and unnecessary policy should be entirely sacrificed to these larger problems for a year or more, in part because wasting badly-needed military talent is itself a national security issue. While Clinton's battle wounds from his failed effort to lift the ban are scaring off many leaders from doing what needs to be done on this issue, the fact remains that the ban can be lifted without spending a dime and will in fact save millions of dollars that are now wasted on replacing fired gay troops. It's not that people "never learn" but that those of us who have studied this issue for fifteen years want to help the nation do it right this time.”

JayJonson replied on Nov 18, 2008 at 19:01:25

“ScarletKnight1307, repealing the ban on gays in the military may not be *your* priority, but don't speak or me. It is one of my top priorities, and Obama said it was one of his as well. billy goat replied on Nov 18, 2008 at 18:49:27

“I'm in agreement with the three comments so far. I see no reason to make this a priority. If our nation wishes to ignore and not take advantage of the talents gay citizens can offer and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for their country, let them find the talent within the ranks of the out and proud heteros. Ending broader discrimination in employment and housing for the GLBT segment and obtaining some parity for same sex couples in establishing relationships serves more people. Until these changes are made, why do the military and citizens of the US deserve the sacrifices of gay people in this manner?”

“this is a tough subject for me, I am not for gay marriage but as a thinker I still voted against prop 8 after taking some time think about it. If I had known this was an Amendment to the California constitution I wouldn't have taken any time to vote against it despite my feelings about the Issue.
This issue has already been struck down by the California supreme court and it is obvious to any thinker that this will end up in the U.S. Supreme Court where it will be decided. Voting for prop 8 just slows that down. Let it go to the Supreme Court where i believe Gay Marriage will be struck down. My problem is the Amendment does not put Civil Unions with equal benefits on the table and talks about the sanctity of marriage. If that is true between one man and one woman then that amendment means you can only be married once unless you are a Widow. If we are going down this road there are consequences!”

Those who we tortured and have been there for years i am not sure how they can have useful information and any prosecution may not work they may need to be sent and tried in other countries or declared prisoners of war status unless congress declares them something else. The rest a deep investigation case by case to see why they are there and who essentially sent them there. if not prison then protective custody. If one of those people get released and and Jaywalks Obama will be held responsible. GitMo is all about torture otherwise we would declare them prisoners of war and have go by the Geneva convention. What value are we getting by having them there we can disperse them through our federal system easily without the public relations hit.
