“Is he intelligent? He's been declaring "ceasefires" and then immediately breaking them as if we're too stupid to notice. He rambles incessantly about grand conspiracies involving everyone from bin Laden to Obama drugging the youth of his country. And he's had literally dozens of opportunities to help calm this situation down, thus securing his rule, and he blew each and every one of them.”

Hope I live long enough to see China rise, and treat Britain and France the way they are treating Libya.”

He's both rational and intelligent. He may be an egomanic, but that's common.

“It's strange to me that you point to Serbia and Libya as examples of victims of some empire. On the one hand, Serbia, which has clearly participated in genocide - including mass rape and the executions of thousands of unarmed civilians, on the other, a nation that has consistently oppressed its political dissidents, backed a wide swath of terrorist organizations, and was actively engaged in brutally stamping out any hint at resistance to the Gadhafi regime. You'll have to forgive me if I fail to tear up at the thought of either of these two being beat into the ground.

With that said, empires are created to reach strategic goals. What goal was met in Serbia? What goal is being met in Libya?”

“I'm not sure if you actually read the source you cited, but if you did, you would see it backs up my case. It's referring specifically to handing over the leadership role in this operation from the United States to NATO. I could see how you might have missed this tid bit when this story first sprouted up, but how you managed to miss it in the source YOU JUST LINKED ME TO is beyond me.”

“Precedent? We have no need for, and virtually no presence in, Serbia. And the other two involved massive ground invasion by American troops, so I hardly feel they're comparable to the limited role the United States is playing in Libya. Even in Iraq, however, we see our presence dwindling while we continue to be pay a high price for gas here at home. So what gives? Were we simply just really, really bad at being an "empire" in that instance?”

procrustes13 on May 27, 2011 at 20:00:22

“My case is based on precedent. Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan... everything has happened with regards to Libya as I expected it to happen. There seems to be this antipathy towards any bringing of other countries affected by the Empire into discussions of the current crisis of the day. That each are affected by the Empire is of course is said to be insufficient as to make those cases relevent in discussing the crisis of the day.”

“Conquest is the goal? In what sense? In the sense that we invade with overwhelming force and acquisition the territory, making it part of the United States? Or what? What's your argument here?”

procrustes13 on May 27, 2011 at 23:52:54

“Serbia is very obedient, that's why there's no occupation. They do as they're told and they've done so since 5 October 2000. When they were told to destroy their portable anti-aircraft weapons, they did so. When they were caught with a spy for the US in their midst (who was Chief of Staff once) they protected him and didn't prosecute him. William Montgomery was described as Serbia's real ruler during the first years post-coup. Libya will be the same way. If there's strategic value in re-opening Wheelus for the US they'll do it. If not, they won't. The key here is if they decide they want to do it Libya will do as told.”
