The Republican Way: Keeping Everything The Way It Is
Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 20:03:51 in Politics
“I agree ! Less money for HMO's equals less money for GOP. But let's not be in such a hurry to annoy the "beast". They still have enough money to do us real harm---if we get them mad, they may even take away all our oxygen ( figuratively or not figuratively, they are evil enough to do it)”

“As a person who is interested in language, it occurs to me that it would be extremely useful for teachers of English as a foreign language to assign Carlin's rants to their students. They are filled with up-to-date neologisms as he was:
"a modern man,
A man for the millennium,
Digital and smoke free.
A diversified multicultural postmodern deconstructionist,
Politically anatomically and ecologically incorrect." etc. etc
What a great lesson for your students of English! Assign his books to your class!”

“"Je n'aime pas les sports d’équipe". Those are the words my cousin from Marseilles said to me upon visiting us here in the USA and seeing an amateur American soccer team playing in the park. Strange, how it was to realize that I agreed completely with him. There was something in our common DNA which united us after 100 years of transoceanic separation----neither of us can see the point in 2 teams "battling" each other as if our worlds depended upon it. Most people, on either side of the ocean, would probably consider us to have a "personality disorder" but it is probably a genetic predisposition”

“It's a tribal thing. It would of course make sense to have some people in a society be genetically disposed to overlook tribal boundaries, otherwise we'd be at war all the time.”

“Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, along with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis have something to do with autoimmunity ( another poorly understood, but very real, concept.) They may all turn out to be the same disorder, but under different disguises, These are no joke. I've already lost one eye to it, and am ever vigilant lest my other eye be stricken. None of the eye doctors where I live recognize what has happened to my eye as it wasn't and isn't in their medical textbooks----only doctors in NYC, specifically the Manhattan Eye and Ear Clinic, correctly diagnosed the problem. But I was so DEPRESSED by the illness that I didn't have the energy to travel so many hundreds of miles back and forth, while dealing with resistant insurance companies, to get further care. Flat on my back, depressed and alone in my dark apartment in BuffaloNY, I had to witness my eyesight vanishing.”

Cat Declawing Banned In Beverly Hills, LA

I have diabetes and my wounds don't heal properly, so cat scratches and bacterial infections are out of the question for me. This is a non issue.”
Pyrrhic Victoria: Why Men Are Becoming More Like Women
Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 22:32:37 in Living
“You're all looking at the subject wrong. Males of MANY species are becoming feminized to some extent! Recently we've read of numerous cases where male frogs and fish have been seen sporting both male and female organs. In some cases, males fail completely to develop male organs. Scientists hypothesize that some pollutants in the environment mimic the effects of estrogens . If frogs and fish can be effected, why can't humans also get over-estrogenized ? Who knows how many "intersexed" cases are actually the result of environmental poolution? And, if this keeps up, all species that reproduce sexually are in big trouble.”

“You mentioned he was a 9th grade dropout. I happened to have attended the school he dropped out of. Let me tell you, he was brilliant! He didn't need to have a formal education ; his lifelong love affair with reading and language usage was more than enough to continue to develop his razor sharp wit and observational ability. Our school (Cardinal Hayes HS in the south Bronx) had a well deserved reputation for strictness (as well as corporal punishment by the good brothers and priests) . Many of my friends dropped out in the 9th grade because of this toughness, but I felt that I needed to stay in order to have some learning beat into me----I wasn't brilliant like George, so I needed the imposed discipline.”

How did CNN miss that one?”
Face the Facts -- and End the War on Drugs

“I never said that alcohol is SAFER than pot. I just said that it is a much nicer "'high" . True, this is only my opinion, but how much more valid an opinion do you need than somebody who is familiar with both? Both pot and alcohol are natural products and are a part of our environment. It is best to learn how to use each in a responsible manner. And I wasn't gloating. Hallucinogens sometimes give one that feeling, as I well remember. Just give your body about 3 weeks to eliminate all the THC and you will see what I mean.”

“Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it.
I also recall when it was printed in Time that it took a year to recover from the effects of acid (LSD), I waited 'till I had a year to spare! LOL I really DID. Was I pissed when I found it only took a day or two!
That's the biggest problem, I think, with our drug policies...it's too easy for young folks to learn that we are lying to them about some drugs and therefore assume ALL drug warnings are lies. We create much of our problems, by showing we can't be trusted which then gives those young folk license to try anything and everything.
Fortunately for me, I was smart enough not to extrapolate too far out. I never tried meth or heroin or many other drugs. I watched those around me be destroyed by them. Not so with pot. Often so with alcohol.
I'm 64 and survived it all very well. Many that I knew were not so lucky.
Most of all, we need to become honest about our drugs and which does what to whom. Our laws should be based on this as well as our actions and information put forward.”

No, they assigned me a coach who phones me every week to make sure I'm keeping to my health goals. So far it's working like a charm; I lost almost 50 lbs and soon feel like I can lose another 50 ! A little bit of accountability ( setting up my diet and exercise program} is doing the tick for me. Try it.”

“I think you misread my post. I was FOR legalization! In the spirit of Mr Hari's blog, I was showing how the "war on drugs" actually encourages drug use. By legalizing a drug, usage may even decrease. Tell me, if you disagree with something that was said, does that mean it is because the other person didn't RESPECT you ? In other words, I disrespect you because I dare to have an opinion that you don't like. To me, this indicates that you are afraid that my point of view has some truth in it, namely that your use of pot has something to do with its being forbidden fruit. Otherwise you wouldn't be so incensed by it.”

DMSmith replied on Nov 12, 2009 at 14:17:20
“I didn't say I wanted my pharmacist to use pot - that's another discussion. However, I wouldn't trust a pharmacist who thought alcohol was less harmful than pot, or would be more apt to support a patient using alcohol than pot. Alcohol is one of the single most destructive things we have in use, far worse than many prescription drugs and far worse than pot. I'd prefer a pharmacist who knew and recognized this. Rather than one who gloats about having given up pot for alcohol. Your retirement is beside the point - but, congratulations”

“When I was much younger, I would often partake of the green herb. But now, as a retired pharmacist, I realize what a stupid drug pot was. It was the worst "high" you could have----a nice, cold, dry martini is infinitely more pleasurable ( with moderate use!) . The fact is, part of the allure that drew me to pot was the thrill of being "naughty", doing something illegal, and putting myself in danger of being arrested. Kids are bored, and will relieve the boredom by doing marginally dangerous things. But, if you legalize the stuff, it all becomes more of a hassle than it's worth; it's no longer exciting, and is now a bore!”

A similar thing has happened in modern music. Economics has changed everything, and things will probably never be completely the same again. But we can adjust.”
