“I guess you don't understand my ironic humor. I know full well that I had nothing to do with whatever was being discussed. But by the way the post was written, it looked like I, as well as all males, was being held accountable----that'sBS ! So I phrased my response as if I were, indeed, accepting my guilt. I never meant to explain anything, even though I said "I have the fight to explain why I did it" . I guess I'll never make it as a comedy writer.”

“That is like white people saying they personally had nothing to do with slavery in this country when their ancestry goes back enough generations that their families likely had slaves. This is a very generally written article, but I guess Im not surprised that some guys feel it singles them out enough to feel the need to say "hey thats not me." Correct, that might not be you but she isnt talking specifically about you. I dont think you got the writers point at all if your first response is a defensive one.”

“Getting back to your post, where you said we should get away from the idea that 1) money is the only value worth pursuing and 2) that constant "growth" is required. For me, it is a no-brainer. Of course you are correct! But there is one proviso: replace the word "growth" with the word "change" which makes more sense for me. Change will always happen; it's part of the universe ( at the risk of boring you, Newton's Laws of Thermodynamics describe this) and happens with or without our help. However, it is up to us to make sure that we have good change, rather than bad change. As far as "fewer and fewer people and corporations owning more and more"---that's one place where we had better make some good changes, and if we don't do that, we are in for some pretty turbulent times. Since I don't relish the thought of revolution, I suggest we devise some changes that can be instituted piecemeal, gradually and gently, almost without the knowledge of those who would rather keep the status quo (GOP). Do you have any ideas for such piecemeal changes?”

“I like the way you explained it. But the original message of Nomi still stings. She may not have had me in mind ( especially since she doesn't know me) but I feel a little traumatized by a presumed character attack. She didn't say "nonsense by all males except Seablood". She said "male nonsense" period. But I'm feeling much better now, thank you. Your answer helped.”

“SeaBlood - why are you taking this so personally? And why are you excusing reptilian behavior as if it is unchangeable and, indeed, should not be changed? And why don't you recognize that each person contains the entire continuum of gender-labeled behavior and that this society, in its race back to the cave, is insisting that we must each retreat back to our gender-assigned behaviors.

I am a born, died-in-the-wool feminist. I do and have known decent men who will not race you to the boss's office to take credit for your work. I've known more men who will.... But I've also known women who will do that same race...though fewer. I've known men for whom I'd run through concrete and men that I can't get away from fast enough. Same for women.

I am inclined to agree with Ms. Prins. But I think that it would be a good idea for this society to get away from the ideas that: 1) money is the only value worth pursuing: and 2) that constant "growth" is required. I also think we have to start back on a path of anti-trust work - we have fewer and fewer people and corporations owning more and more, which gives them the power and ruins competition. But then the big boys who run these giant corporations don't really want competition anyway. They just want to line their own pockets. There's more to life than that.”

“"Male nonsense" ? Thank you for blaming me for everything. Since it's all my fault, allow me to explain. It is what we males do. It's called aggressiveness, and it's part of biology. It's not always pretty, since it involves hunting and killing and acting selfish. It is also what women often look for in a man. I didn't make this up; it's existed since before humanity came along.”

I loved my mother, and I had many memories of her and how strong and intelligent she was for me. But that person had already died years before this funeral. She suffered from complete dementia, as had both my grandmothers. The person in the coffin was something else----not the mother I knew and remembered. The dead woman hadn't known who I was for years, For me, she was an empty shell, just like a peanut shell after you've eaten the nut inside, completely inconsequential. “As the former owner of a small pharmacy, I can tell you that large corporations put me out of business. They dramatically undercut my prices for prescriptions ( which I scrupulously kept fair and low) selling prescriptions for much less than cost to take away all my customers. Once I had gone out of business, they promptly raised their prices to "normal" levels. For example, I was charging a ridiculously low $3.00 for a certain generic prescription, but my corporate foes now soak their customers $20.00 for the same thing. How many independent pharmacies do you have in your area? In my town, they are few and far in between.”

“I live on the USA side of the Canadian border. Often I would cross the border to eat at one of my favorite restaurants. On one of those occasions, however, I was stopped at the border. They made me get out of the car and enter the office, where I was interrogated. They wanted to see what was in my pockets, So far so good. When I got back to my car, I found they had ransacked it, looking for drugs or something. Again, so far so good. Then they said I was free to go. But my car wouldn't start!p-- In their zeal, they did something to the car's linkage, and I didn't even know at the time what a linkage was. So I went back into the office and said, ". Can you please fix whatever you did to my car so that I can be on my way" They wouldn't look at me or listen to me. So I was there parked by the immigration office for about an hour, wondering how I was going to get out of this mess in time to eat at my favorite restaurant. It was scary. I fiddled with everything under the hood that I could reach, not knowing what I was doing. Finally, I discovered what a linkage was and reconnected it. It was a miracle! But now I'm afraid to cross the border; to do so would trigger Post Traumatic memories. Now I no longer associate Canada with politeness.”

AlisonCarnie replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 15:44:41

“As a Canadian who has crossed the border for over forty years and currently lives in Chicago, I find the negative comments hysterical ... Firstly, Canada is the second largest country in the world ... the border is rather long ... you are going to find a jerk somewhere sometime. Secondly, upon my many trips back to Chicago, if I get a polite American "crossing guard" I am stunned. Thirdly, Americans have been coming across into Canada for years making cracks about "funny money" (ours has colours); parading around my home town of Toronto looking for igloos (Toronto is farther south than all of Washington and most of Oregon) with an imperious "we invented the world" attitude ... Well, Yanks, a Canadian invented BlackBerry AND basketball .. maybe the Canadian Immigration officer just exhibited, albeit rudely, what the rest of the world thinks most of the time ... the United States is one of 195 countries in the world ... find humble.”

A man for the millennium,
Digital and smoke free.

A diversified multicultural postmodern deconstructionist,
Politically anatomically and ecologically incorrect." etc. etc

What a great lesson for your students of English! Assign his books to your class!”

Strange, how it was to realize that I agreed completely with him. There was something in our common DNA which united us after 100 years of transoceanic separation----neither of us can see the point in 2 teams "battling" each other as if our worlds depended upon it. “You're all looking at the subject wrong. Males of MANY species are becoming feminized to some extent! Recently we've read of numerous cases where male frogs and fish have been seen sporting both male and female organs. In some cases, males fail completely to develop male organs. Scientists hypothesize that some pollutants in the environment mimic the effects of estrogens . If frogs and fish can be effected, why can't humans also get over-estrogenized ? Who knows how many "intersexed" cases are actually the result of environmental poolution? And, if this keeps up, all species that reproduce sexually are in big trouble.”
