Obama's Dover Salute Is an Iconic Image of His Presidency

Commented Oct 29, 2009 at 10:43:14 in Politics

“Thank you, Mr. President, for having the care and the gravitas to meet our war dead with such solemnity as they return to American soil. You're not ignoring or camouflaging the real cost of war, as was done for eight years prior to your presidency, and we Americans appreciate the respectfulness and realism of your gesture. It shows heart and spirit.”

“Don't exaggerate. Bush did not meet with the families of *every* soldier that died. He met privately with more than 500 families of troops killed in action and more than 950 wounded veterans from a war that had far more casualties than that. And how can you read someone's emotional state or sincerity from a photograph or video footage taken from a distance? Just because Obama isn't breaking down and weeping doesn't mean he's emotionless. It means he is solemn when the occasion calls for solemnity -- as this one does. The point is that Bush never greeted our war dead when they returned to American soil and forbade the media, and thus the American people, from seeing it. Obama has, and you ought to respect that respectful gesture, extending to him the same doubt you seem willing to stretch for Bush.”

“Reagan is one of the most overrated figures in history. He had far less to do with the end of the Cold War than Mikhail Gorbachev did, as the latter put his political career on the line and let the old order in his country break up beneath his feet. Reagan took no such risks and suffered no such consequences. Instead, he funded and armed (!) Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and the Islamic Republic of Iran (!), which has come back to haunt the USA in terrible ways. Such is not the stuff of a wise leader, much less a Nobel Peace Prize winner.”

“Your absolutely right, Mikhail Gorbachev was the 1st Soviet leader, who understood the realities of the day, he didn't only risk his political career, which ended when the Soviet Union devolved, he risked military over through, he risked it all. Although Ronald Reagan played his part in ending the Cold War, Bush 41 and Jim Baker did the hard work of diplomacy that opened the door. The Berlin Wall finally came down during Bush 41's Presidency. Bush 41 would not go to Germany and make speeches at the Wall because he didn't want to empower the hard liners in the Soviet Union. What puzzles me is why Republicans never give Bush 41 the credit he deserves, thieve turned Reagan into some kind of cartoon icon, which even his son Ron Reagan is uncomfortable with.”

Sex and Sin

“Conservatives always bark how they're all for smaller government and the least government intrusion in citizens' private lives. So why now are they so bent on allowing the government to deny citizens access to buy and use sex toys in the privacy of their own bedrooms? One word explains it: hypocrisy.”

Can A Christian Learn from Ramadan?

Commented Aug 24, 2009 at 20:17:32 in Living

“There's really no reason for Christians to observe Ramadan -- all they need to do is look back into their own tradition and revive the practice of praying, fasting and giving alms mandated since ancient times. Ancient Christians kept Wednesdays (the day Judas bargained to betray Jesus) and Fridays (the day Jesus was crucified) as fast days, along with 40-day seasons like Lent and Advent -- eating no food during the day, eating inexpensive vegetarian fare in the evening, distributing what they saved on food to the poor, attending church and praying at home more often. Many still do, particularly in the Orthodox, Coptic, Ethiopian and Byzantine Catholic churches. And such practices are not unknown among many Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and others. It's all part of what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:1-18.”

hp blogger Yvonne R. Davis replied on Aug 24, 2009 at 20:35:22

“SensibleJoe,

Thank you for your feedback and information. No one is saying a Christian has to observe Ramadan. If you re-read the piece you will see what it is really saying. I think we can learn from this practice as can others learn from Christianity and Judaism. Thank you.”

“Nobody's silencing anybody. Companies are just choosing not to pay money for Glenn Beck's untruthful ramblings. That's how the free market works -- supply and demand, popularity of product, etc. And the First Amendment doesn't cover lying and disinformation. You can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater when there is none, cause a stampede and then claim "freedom of speech." The same applies to claiming the government is setting up "death panels" or threatening people at town hall meetings.”

Danger on the Right

Commented Aug 10, 2009 at 04:35:56 in Politics

“Yes, it does make sense to present both sides of the story and have them meet and talk at the same table -- then consumers in the marketplace of ideas get a much clearer picture of what's out there, and differing sides are actually forced to make a cogent argument rather than rely on one-sided rhetoric often devoid of facts. It wouldn't "steal people's ability to listen to whatever they want." It would be giving them more to listen to and more to make sound judgments. It worked in the past in this country, and it still works on PBS and Jon Stewart. Anyone who's afraid to sit down and debate with their opposition isn't too sure of their ideas, convictions and facts and only fears being unmasked as wrong. Democracy thrives on more information, not less.”

“Nobody working two or three jobs to make ends meet is paying 50% in income taxes under our indexed tax system; that high of a percentage would be in the upper classes, who are working no jobs but derive their income from other people working for them. And disagree as you might with their policies, Libertarian (yeah, I got the "Atlas Shrugged" hint), Obama and the Democrats haven't maligned freedom, individuality, personal accomplishment or strength. Those American characteristics were at far greater risk under the Bush administration and are none too highly valued by statism-driven necons: think back to how much they wanted the government in your bedroom, told you what sex education you could and couldn't have, suspended habeas corpus, restricted freedom of expression to out-of-the-way "First Amendment zones," etc.”

“Yes, real wages, decent jobs, educational opportunities and a decent living in the unrealistic nonstop ascent of the "American Dream" have eroded for many of us, myself included -- but that doesn't make me devolve into an irrational, inhuman hatemonger consumed by paranoid conspiracy theories and losing all self-control. No matter how adverse the situation, you have to flex human intelligence, conscience and decency by dint of free will, roll with the punches and make the best of what's on hand and work to make things better, though they'll never be ideal -- realizing it's going to require sweat, toil and sacrifice, and may yield results in the long term rather than the short term. That's the American spirit that got us through the Great Depression and World War II. This generation of instant gratification and unrealistic expectations would have perished back then.”

Mobs R Us?

Commented Aug 09, 2009 at 16:43:44 in Politics

“Nonsense. The town hall meetings are a public forum for hearing what the public wants and needs. But for that to happen, people have to speak intelligently and rationally -- not yell, scream, hang effigies, make death threats, rant how the President of the United States is supposedly a "Nazi," a "socialist" and a "non-citizen," or call him the "n" word. Obama's grassroots campaigns were peaceful, polite and productive. The crude behavior of these "protesters" is disturbing the peace, disrupting the democratic process and obstructing the constitutional right of American citizens to assemble peaceably and engage in dialogue with their elected representatives in government.”

Palin Attended Church Event With Samurai Sword Ceremony

Commented Jul 18, 2009 at 01:51:26 in Politics

“These spiritually self-deluded charlatans are trivializing both Japanese culture and the Christian faith. Twenty-first century white Americans misappropriating a Samurai tradition that is not theirs is bad enough, but the presentation of swords in a church is a slap in the face of Jesus Christ, who taught: "All who take up the sword will die by the sword" (Matthew 26:25). Jesus taught turning the other cheek when slapped, not wreaking vengeance and resorting to violence. The only "spiritual warfare" Christians are to engage in is fighting their own sinful impulses within themselves -- not in coercing and harassing others.”
