“Are you a lawyer? Before you suggested that I had to prove discrimination, now I have to prove intent? lol. Are we going to court?

I probably have some good lawyer jokes somewhere, but rest assured they're fiction so they can't be offensive.”

“Ok...just so I'm keeping up with this,

First, the sexism doesn't exist. Second, there is some nasty stuff going on, but the girl is a willing participant so it's all good. Third, none of the above matters because it's fiction. Ahh...it's fiction. Therefore, it can't be offensive or sexist.”

FunctionOfTheCrisp replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 21:00:07

“Absolutely. It's just a stupid ad. It was quickly pulled, and it's not a big deal. I come on here, say ewww and it's over. What I didn't expect was to be faced with 10 people passionately defending the ad as if their life depended on it, and accusing me and others of being passive aggressive or not liking sex. It's unnecessary.”

mykeru replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 00:35:51

“Yes, I agree. Everyone should stop complaining. You come in, you tell people how they should think and feel and that's that.

Nice work if you can get it.”

“There is NO WAY the girl is a willing participant. She is the object of the commercial, not an informed or empowered participant in it. They talk about banging her. They buddy up on the side, yet still in her presence, discussing the upcoming sexual acts of the evening. The girl's part is also written as an underage virgin, which once again suggests naivety and vulnerability. The man/boy have 95 percent of the dialogue in the scene. There are many, many ways this commercial could have been written so that it was more about 2 mischevious teens fooling a parent and escaping out on the town in a new car. But it wasn't written that way, unfortunately. The dad starts out suspicious and seems to be in the daughter's corner, but then quickly joins with the boy, and they're practically back slapping each other. I believe they felt this was necessary because how else are you going to reduce the tensions between the dad and boy to discuss the car? They become "mates" as the article points out. This is what creates the separation between them and his daughter, while they objectify her. Initially, the commercial may have been pitched as the first idea (which would explain the "clean getaway" title), but got sidetracked because of the need to sell the car.”

“What I think it indicates is that we've become tone deaf to the issue. There's just so much of it, when we see it in a Toyota ad on regular tv, some of us are shocked, but many of us figure, eh I've seen it before. But a steady diet of this stuff is not good for us. Just like anything else, we become desensitized to it. Then yes, you're right, someones daughter grows up into young adulthood, and is faced with this kind of environment without even realizing it or understanding why.”

silk olive replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 20:32:47

“i think this is true, that our culture at large is pretty desensitized to this stuff. when i see something like this i think its in poor taste, not clever or funny, but am not really personally offended.

i do however think of the msg that it might send to girls (and boys) currently in s*ual abuse situations, as well as fathers who may not be abusing their children, but who might laugh at this commercial on tv thereby setting a standard for their sons and daughters that this is all in good fun.”

“Oh my god. And if I go to your house and throw eggs at your door, are you participating in the prank just because you own the house? And the house is doing nothing but sitting there with the porch light on?”

Ward Anderson replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 00:46:42

“You bore me, Lena. I'm far beyond your debate 101 tactics. Take your Master's in Poetry and argue with someone who can tolerate your pretentiousness more than I. I'm better than that and haven't the patience for passive-agressive jabs like yours. Call my comments personal, at least they're honest and correct. And I didn't have to tout laughable credentials as you did. And I don't have to dance around the truth in order to get to the bottom of why people have the insecurities they do. The "Daddy Issues" comment stands, and remains correct.”

Lena McFarland replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 18:48:44

“also, since the daughter is a character in the skit and not a real person, her remarks don't really have anything to do with whether or not the ad is offensive. it's really hard to use the "she asked for it" defense when it's fiction.”

Lena McFarland replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 18:44:55

“ward anderson, I was wondering when it would get personal and someone would accuse someone of having personal issues with men for being offended at this commercial.

Making an argument personal like that implies that you don't have enough logic behind your position, you have to resort to personal attacks because you're losing the debate.

I'm sorry that your arguments are that weak.”

Ward Anderson replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 18:23:22

“You have serious issues with men and sexuality.

Only people who want to hate sex and want to hate a human's desire for sex would be as adamant about this perceived "sexim" that you can't even define.

If you can't define it, then how to you know what it is? And if you don't know what it is, how can it offend you?”

Neophile replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 18:07:03

“I asked that you explain how it is sexist, not define sexist. But now that you make the claim that my definition is wrong (it taken from a Mariam Websters dictionary, it may be incomplete but it ain't wrong), please help me out. What is the "correct" definition, and given that definition how is the commercial sexist.”

“The girl is being ignored and objectified. There is nothing empowering about the girl in this sexual context. Sex can be used to denigrate, or empower, or objectify, or ridicule, or honor, or be a right of passage, it can be exciting and new, it can be joyful, it can be silly and funny...etc, there are many ways it can be experienced. In this case, it's actually ironic, because the female is not only being objectified, she "is" literally the object - she's the car, and the car is her. In addition, there is the element of vuglarity. And vulgarity is certainly a deliberate way to further denigrate. Sex is great, but the writers use of such phrases as "on her back" and "she can take a pounding" is deliberate and sends a subtle message, in this context.”

“This is exactly why the democratic party is always in disarray and full of DINOS. They stand for nothing and do not have similar values. This is like a bad Seinfeld episode. Elaine is impressed with how good looking her b/f is and how perfect. Seinfeld asks her, yeah but is he progressive? Is he pro-choice? Oh, he's pro-choice, Elaine laughs. "But are you sure?...." LOL. (He wasn't).

No, sadly and pathetically so, we're not sure. You turn around and one of us calls someone a racist name. Or says something completely sexist. Or says something derrogatory about gays, or says women got it good and are ruling the world. You just DON'T KNOW anymore.

Instead of guys on here just admitting, yeah ok it's sexist and it shouldn't be in a car commercial, many of you feel like you've got to defend it at all costs, and go on and on about it...."define sexism!" LOL. Define it? Oh come on. Let's do this for 3 more hours while you hold onto your junk for dear life.

No surprise that the Stupid Stupeck amendment was put in a healthcare bill by ONE OF US. No surprise that the public option was detrailed by ONE OF US. It's just what we are, now. It's who we are.”

“Yes it is! Sex is actually very healthy, and nudity is natural. So, I know I can count on all you open-minded people to refrain from calling Paris Hilton a whore in a chat room, or making assumptions about the women Tiger Woods dated. If we're all so respectful of women in every sexual context then why do the women who's names are being mentioned in relation to Tiger, feel compelled to come out and announce that they're not whores or prostitutes?

Life is sexually transmitted. And Life is also a double-standard.”
