“"don't buy a toyota."
Yaris is an Echo. It was just renamed is all. Trust me, lots of people are not buying a Yaris...lo l.
But really your post doesn't address any relevant point. It's not about, don't buy a toyota. Most toyotas are good cars. Are you saying that any content on tv is ok? Because that's what you're implying. Don't like it, don't buy a toyota. If that's the case, then all subject matter should be ok. All subject matter, no matter who it's directed at.”

“I absolutely agree. I don't see the point the poster is making at all. It's an ad. That's all it is. If he thinks it's censorship to for a company to pull their own ad that fails miserably, then he doesn't understand what censorship is. It's a free country, make your own tasteless ads on Utube...lo l.
Um, also, the poster has an Obama avitar. I wonder how he feels about Fox News. Can't he just change the channel? I wonder how he feels about those watermelon postcards? I wonder how he felt about the fist bump, gun-toting, islamist Obama on the cover of the New Yorker? Wasn't that satire? What's wrong with satire?”

“Thank you for your post, but be prepared for a determined few who will try to discredit everything you say. You seem to have come to this reasonable conclusion all by yourself with no problem. I agree, there's a lot wrong with the commercial. "Discussing the daughter's sexual future" without her participation certainly is one of them. Her character is written as an underage virgin as well, just to make the power imbalance even more distinct. And I admit that as a poster said yesterday, 16 year old girls get deflowered all the time, but never have I seen it where the dad makes knowing faces and discusses the type of sex his daughter will have with the teen boyfriend. I mean, there's just no basis in reality for that.”

“Ignoring what facts? Why are your opinions facts and mine are not? It seems to me that the facts are pretty clear - the ad was not properly vetted, it was simply shown on the internet. And that's where it belongs - in a venue with less boundaries. Once it went from an internet spoof to a legitimate car advertisement, that's where the problem rightly arose, and Toyota pulled it. It was a business decision, and ads are pulled all the time because they send the wrong message. It could be racial, it could be sexual, it could be ethnic based, etc. If an ad crosses the line, it crosses the line, period.
What is very strange indeed is not a car company pulling an ad, which is done all the time, but a few posters like yourself spending all night long furiously defending the ad and attacking posters like myself who simply agreed with Toyota. We didn't invent sexism or bad marketing, we simply acknowledged it.”

“Oh, I've backed up every point I've made with facts and logical analysis arrived at by breaking down the ad systematically. I don't defend the ad; in fact, the only thing I've said about the ad as a whole is that it is fictional comedy. I haven't said whether I find it funny, inappropriate, gross, or what have you.
You have not provided sufficient substance to back up any challenge to my conclusions that the ad is not sexist and not incestuous. You've made a lot of posts and a lot of points, but none that refute mine. You are free to do so, of course.”

“Why not call their bluff and let them filibuster? Or put the heat on Joe, if he's the 60th vote. Call their bluff. You just know that if it was the other way around, and Dems were filibustering a bill for major health reform, they would not be able to sustain a fillibuster, because they'd be slandered all over tv by the republicans and repub special interests.
Or else just scrap the whole thing. The back door deals were already done by Obama to get support for this bill. Why must there be yet more opposition in the Senate? Leiberman said he made himself clear all along. Fine, if he's the 60th vote, then why didn't we just go to king joe and ask him what bill he wants, and if it's not what we need we say forget it, and then yank the cushy positions and nice office from king joe and treat him like the piece of crap he is. Then we scrap the whole effort and let the republicans deal with it when they're in office, and we focus on using the money instead for jobs and other things that will actually help people.”

First, the sexism doesn't exist. Second, there is some nasty stuff going on, but the girl is a willing participant so it's all good. Third, none of the above matters because it's fiction. Ahh...it's fiction. Therefore, it can't be offensive or sexist.”

“Absolutely. It's just a stupid ad. It was quickly pulled, and it's not a big deal. I come on here, say ewww and it's over. What I didn't expect was to be faced with 10 people passionately defending the ad as if their life depended on it, and accusing me and others of being passive aggressive or not liking sex. It's unnecessary.”

“There is NO WAY the girl is a willing participant. She is the object of the commercial, not an informed or empowered participant in it. They talk about banging her. They buddy up on the side, yet still in her presence, discussing the upcoming sexual acts of the evening. The girl's part is also written as an underage virgin, which once again suggests naivety and vulnerability. The man/boy have 95 percent of the dialogue in the scene. There are many, many ways this commercial could have been written so that it was more about 2 mischevious teens fooling a parent and escaping out on the town in a new car. But it wasn't written that way, unfortunately. The dad starts out suspicious and seems to be in the daughter's corner, but then quickly joins with the boy, and they're practically back slapping each other. I believe they felt this was necessary because how else are you going to reduce the tensions between the dad and boy to discuss the car? They become "mates" as the article points out. This is what creates the separation between them and his daughter, while they objectify her. Initially, the commercial may have been pitched as the first idea (which would explain the "clean getaway" title), but got sidetracked because of the need to sell the car.”

“What I think it indicates is that we've become tone deaf to the issue. There's just so much of it, when we see it in a Toyota ad on regular tv, some of us are shocked, but many of us figure, eh I've seen it before. But a steady diet of this stuff is not good for us. Just like anything else, we become desensitized to it. Then yes, you're right, someones daughter grows up into young adulthood, and is faced with this kind of environment without even realizing it or understanding why.”

i do however think of the msg that it might send to girls (and boys) currently in s*ual abuse situations, as well as fathers who may not be abusing their children, but who might laugh at this commercial on tv thereby setting a standard for their sons and daughters that this is all in good fun.”

I'm better than that and haven't the patience for passive-agressive jabs like yours. Call my comments personal, at least they're honest and correct. And I didn't have to tout laughable credentials as you did. And I don't have to dance around the truth in order to get to the bottom of why people have the insecurities they do. The "Daddy Issues" comment stands, and remains correct.”

Making an argument personal like that implies that you don't have enough logic behind your position, you have to resort to personal attacks because you're losing the debate.
I'm sorry that your arguments are that weak.”

Only people who want to hate sex and want to hate a human's desire for sex would be as adamant about this perceived "sexim" that you can't even define.
If you can't define it, then how to you know what it is? And if you don't know what it is, how can it offend you?”
