“I'd add: Take a sabbatical from work; travel to all of those distant (and near) wonders you've been dreaming of; take your kid, niece or nephew for a proper restaurant meal (even better if you can sample a cuisine they've near had before) and leave a basket of treats for an elderly neighbour who can't get out and about this holiday season.”

“Hmm, is she telling him or several hundred thousand Huffington Post readers? I can't speak for 'Gregory' but if I was 13 years old and my mother pulled a stunt like this I'd feel like squirming. Yes you're right, as parents we are responsible for our children. But there is no evidence of Gregory "not being respectful and thinking in advance nor using common sense". A loving mother wouldn't embarrass her child like this in front of the general public. For shame.”

Pebbles Kon on Jan 9, 2013 at 23:52:44

“@ Sharon -- I don't think she meant it to embarrass her child.”

“Maybe if it had been phrased as 'Advice from a mother to a son' it would have come across as caring and responsible. As it is it sounds rather preachy and even dictatorial. Phrases such as 'failure to comply with the following list will result in termination of your iPhone ownership' and an insistence on 'rules and regulations' jar with the writer's stated wish of developing a responsible young man.”

ChesterMcPuggle on Dec 31, 2012 at 17:46:56

“In life there are rules and regulations we need to live by. The mother's language IS caring in responsible. What a great idea.”

srj on Dec 31, 2012 at 16:42:17

“"Failure to comply..." is commonly used. The kid needs to get used to it. If it hurts his feelings, then he has a problem, imho.”

Jaimey 1982 on Dec 31, 2012 at 15:54:45

“May I ask why? She's the parent. She's in charge. When this child goes out into the world, he's going to need to know how to follow the rules set out by the ones in charge. At least she laid the rules out clearly.”

Chandra Dickson on Dec 31, 2012 at 15:32:14

“As a parent, it is my job, all parents jobs, to be preachy and even at times dictatorial. I gave my own some some similar rules when he received his first cell phone 6 years ago.”

Pebbles Kon on Dec 31, 2012 at 14:46:05

“It's a contract!!! She's not suggesting nor advising her son what to do... she is TELLING him what to do.

As a parent, I am responsible for my children. If I feel that they are abusing certain privileges, then I will resort to have to be a dictator in my own home. And I wouldn't care less how I sound. Since they (the children) are obviously not being respectful and thinking in advance nor using common sense, then I'll have to remind them how that should be.

We are first and foremost their parents. That's the way it has always been.”

CoachNelly2 on Dec 31, 2012 at 13:48:49

“But "advice" implies that the list is merely a suggestion and does not have to be followed. People give advice all the time, but we don't always (and nor should we) follow every piece of advice that is given. This is a contract which means a non-negotiable. These rules are not up for discussion and the mother made her point very well while still letting her son know that she loves him and what a wonderful young adult he is.”

TinyYogini on Dec 31, 2012 at 13:31:35

“Learning responsibility requires consequences, does it not?”

Rachel Houtman on Dec 31, 2012 at 13:28:30

“If the son were 18, or 25, I would agree with you. Laying down concrete rules and regulations are a way to both insure that the young man understands that this list is not negotiable, and at the same time prepares him for a world where we have laws, not "suggestions". The 13 year old brain is just starting to enter an extreme re-wiring, which makes it more prone to risk-taking and disregarding suggestions.”

Mohamjip on Dec 31, 2012 at 13:27:10

“It is a parent's job to set ground rules. Rules can sound dictatorial. More parents need to start parenting; many don't know how to do it.”
