“It bothers me because it honors one religious belief on public land. Our government, founded on the idea that all religions would be treated equally, shouldn't be winking at one over the others.
This whole argument is ridiculous, and the offense is obvious. If it was a Muslim crescent and star, most people would freak out.
The only serious defenders are people who want to privilege one religion.”

“Actually, any of us who don't want the government favoring any one religious group are offended. I don't have a lot of extra time, but I have enough to recognize that we can't allow the government to start endorsing one religion over another. That slope leads to tyranny.”

“I suppose we should also just leave any and all discrimination based on religious views.
On government land, no one religious group should be favored. This isn't hard to understand, and you're being an atheist doesn't add any relevance to your non-argument, sorry.”

Keith Olbermann Delivers Hour-Long "Special Comment" On Health Care (VIDEO)
Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 04:55:35 in Media
“Easily the single best comment, argument, discussion or explanation of the need for health care reform that anyone has put out there.
Thank you, Olbermann, for being a patriot, for reminding us that America ought to have values, real moral values, that if our liberty and democracy is to mean anything, it has to mean that we, at least, protect all of our citizens against pain, suffering and death to the best of our ability.
Thanks for reminding us that as American people we are all in this together, no matter how the shrill screamers might try to divide us, and that we must fight together against the non-people, the insurance corporations that exist, by law, only to maximize their profits, not to make people healthy.”

The point you make is the crucial one here. Why are folks so concerned about whether one particular commentator might have a conflict of interest because of the corporate interests he represents...
when ALL of our television news is owned and run by giant corporations with lots of profits at stake -- all of which they seek to protect through their programming and advertising.

Actually, unemployment benefits stand to run out for ALL Americans, eventually, as they are not unlimited. The sentence needs a time element. When will 1.5 million lose their benefits?”

Judge Whose Mother And Husband Were Shot And Killed By Litigant Declined To Buy "Expensive" Home Security System
Commented Aug 02, 2009 at 01:58:29 in Chicago
“Did any of you complaining about the "bad taste" of this story bother to read it?
The judge was at a panel discussion about judges' security. She made these statements in a public forum in the hope that other people would hear them.
If a crime victim wants to speak publicly to encourage others to avoid the misfortune they experienced, then how is it "bad taste" for the media to report their words?”

“Because the article makes it sound like it was her fault for the death of her husband and mother for not buying the security system - out of cheapness. Instead of the article stating she was simply trying to warn others, that in retrospect, of course she would have bought a better system. However, the murders where not her fault but rather the fault of lunatic hatred. Who knows if the increased security would even have stopped the senseless killings? A deterrent, yes, but this kind of hating peoples, white supremacy and gun-ban haters, would probably have killed anyway. They are the criminals here. Those who try to rile-up these ignorant, violent folks are more at fault than this innocent judge.”
DKLabRat replied on Aug 02, 2009 at 07:29:24
“It is you who misses the point. It is a natural part of the grieving process to question your actions, to wonder if something you did or didn't do could have changed things. To torment yourself over what you did 'wrong'. This does not mean that ignorant journalists can take the natural impulse to unfairly blame oneself and say, "Yes, we agree - it was your fault. You should have been more careful." That is shameful.”

“It seems to me we have two options:
Either Geithner is so economically challenged that he didn't realize he had to pay self-employment taxes (in which case I don't want him anywhere near my Treasury in a time of crisis)
Or Geithner decided to go along with the wink-wink rules at the IMF, cheat our nation, and expected to not get caught (in which case I don't want him anywhere near my Treasury in a time of crisis)
The problem is that this is symptomatic of the attitudes that were responsible for the financial disaster we are in.
We need honest folks running our government, and we need patriots who understand that paying your fair share is what we agree to in order to have a society.
In sum: Geithner? That's not change we can believe in.”
