The utterly smug and complacent mediocrity of the GOP has taken them farther than any rational intelligent person could have predicted, until one factors in the malevolent genius of fear mongering, wedge issues, cuts in educational funding and supression of the minority vote by status quo conservatives who deny the effectiveness of government while running for the jobs they don't intend to do.
In Palin we see more of the same, only worse. We see the possible high schoolization of our federal government, where a short skirt, a smirk and a wink and a couple pom poms, can take you all the way to the top. If you're going to be afraid of anything, America, be afraid of this.”

The US is in a phase of post-industrial capitalism. Wealth is less and less created through manufacturing and more and more in financial services.
