“Nope, it's an American creation. They had to create new names for it in Mexico, because El Pollo Loco makes absolutely no sense in Spanish.”

How To Make The Perfect Guacamole

Commented Jan 30, 2012 at 01:35:25 in Taste

“I agree. I'm lucky enough to have an avocado tree, but unlucky enough to have a BACON avocado tree; they do not do well in guacamole. The second most important aspect is chunkiness - it's best to just scoop the avocado out, and stir as minimally as possibly.”

d7vn on Jan 30, 2012 at 11:50:34

“Depending upon where you live, you may want to consider having your tree grafted over to Hass, Fuerte or Gwen. If you don't have any other avocado trees near you, just graft 1/2 your tree to Hass, as Bacons are a good cross-pollinator for Hass.”

Healthy Spa Trends For 2012

Commented Jan 23, 2012 at 01:09:58 in Healthy Living

“I'm just going to make a wild guess here and say that the portion of the population that struggles with childhood obesity does not overlap with the portion whose parents can afford to send them to a day spa.

On another note, I am pleased by the trend of "medical pedicures". I haven't gotten a pedicure since I got toenail fungus from one salon. I really miss the callus sloughing, and the foot/calf massages, and hope that getting a pedicure supervised may mean even better care, and less of a chance of spreading infections. Once my fungus is cured, I hope to get a "medicare"!”

“This list made me sick to my stomach just in looking at it. I clearly remember the day I decided I didn't like mayonnaise... There's just something wrong with it. Just to add: anything weird made from meat, all seafood, mushrooms (there's something wrong with the fungi kingdom), and olives. I also abstain from pork for whole other set of reasons. Going to restaurants is tricky!”

djtejas on Jan 21, 2012 at 13:38:19

“WOW, just out of curiosity, where did you grow up?
A lot of what people like to eat has to do with their upbringing and what they are exposed to. My ex wife is from Minnesota where they tend to eat bland foods. My kids love being with me because we eat all kinds of different foods they never got at their mom's house.
Of course some people do learn to expand their food horizons...”

“Have you tried making your own mayo? It's a night and day difference from the store bought stuff. I prefer making my own, but it isn't always feasible. If not, Duke's is the way to go!”

11 Health Habits That Will Help You Live To 100

Commented Jan 18, 2012 at 19:33:02 in Healthy Living

“My grandpa is 101, and I'm fairly certain he has only followed the habit to "be conscientious", because he is extremely frugal and a follower of routine. Otherwise, his secret to his age? Drink a vodka every day, retire at 55, smoke for half your life, have bacon and eggs for breakfast, and eat lots of chocolate. I think his real secret is that he continues to live on the farm where he has spent the majority of his adult life- although it is isolating, he gets to walk with his dog and look at his trees every day.”

LolaM9259 on Jan 18, 2012 at 20:12:28

“Long live Grandpa. I lived on a farm drank unpasturized milk as a child and ate butter like there was no tomorow. Still use butter today. Lot's of it and the milk I don't drink cause I get mine from grocery stores now and it (whole milk taste like water) Didn't eat chickens that were fed steriods nor cows that was fed anitibiotics. If you needed meat Grandpa would go and have a cow slaughter and fill up the freezor for a year. Ate fish out of the pond. Fried to perfection.Ate apples off the trees. Brown spots and all. Now I know food from the grocery will kill you. Long live Grandpa!”

I work at a school now, and whenever it's my rotation to bring treats, I bring almonds! My grandfather is 101, and I think that's been a part of his longevity - a lifetime of munching on almonds.”

“I would find a therapist, regardless of the insurance issues, stat! There is no time like the present to work on how to deal with a toxic person. There are many therapists who offer sliding scales, I would especially look into any intern-graduate programs.”
