“Why do you need so badly to use one specific word "racist" to describe some Blacks who have "race prejudice" against say white people in general or Latino people in general or homophobia against gays. Nobody is saying that Black people can't have prejudice, even very strong prejudice. But "racism" is something different. "Racism" isn't just really, really strong prejudice. "Racism" is a system that gives a white person the benefit of the doubt or a break when it would't give one to a Black person or a Latino, etc. Racism is what is behind a loan officer granting a loan to a white person with the same qualifications as a Black applicant who doesn't get the loan. It is prejudice and the power to do grant or deny something of value or some privilege or opportunity. Racism is what lets a white person go shop at an expensive store without being watched while a Black person is watched closely. Now you may say what if the loan officer is Latino? Racism is more than just a one time one individual decision. It is a pattern and an official or unofficial policy or custom of making negative decisions toward a number of people whose only consistently shared characteristic is race.”

You can't explain how my statement was racist, because it isn't true. You are a reactionary person who sees a statement about race that you don't understand, so your reflex reaction is to label it as "racist".
If Barack was white, and he was preaching a message of "hope", it would be less credible, because a white preaching "hope" is coming from a perspective of privelige. A black man's message of "hope" is more meaningful because it's coming from a perspective where "hope" was necessary to get where he is today, because of our nation's racist past.
Barack Obama, as a black man, is proof of "hope" working. He is more credible. I believe in "hope" because of Barack Obama's blackness and success. It's never happened before.

“Mr. Orlando Lima:
In regards to your statement about the OJ verdict that "...it pissed off whites that a black man possessed the financial means to beat the state of California in court", I think you are really selling a lot of "whites" short. Most of the "whites" I know (and that's a lot, cuz I'm white too) were pissed because a guy got away with a brutal murder. I've never heard any "white" bring up what you claim we "whites" are pissed about. Where did you get your information on that statement?
Also, it really bugs me when some will narrowly define the word "racism" to EXCLUDE black people. Please don't insult our intelligence by claiming that black people can't be racist. "Racism" is not a term that only applies to the rich and powerful. The rich and powerful more effectively USE racism, but a poor black man who hates all white people because they are white is a racist.
A quick search of the internet produces these two definitions of "racism": 1 The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2 Discrimination or prejudice based on race. Get it?
YOU don't get to define the word based on YOUR thoughts and experiences, and then say that "whites" can't use it in a certain way. That's not the way language works. Language is for everyone.
Also, how can you be taken seriously when you say conservatives "hate black people"? What an ignorant statement.
By the way, one of the many reasons that I strongly support Barack Obama is because he is black. I want a black president. If Barack was white, his message would have less meaning.

“The definitions you gave are too basic. Check other sources for the widely-accepted definitions used by scholars researching in the area of race and racism.
We are not redefining the word based on our thoughts and experiences and saying whites cannot use it that way. We are using the term as it is used by scholars researching in the field of race and racism use it. As scholars, they have had to come up with more precise definitions than are used by nonscholars.
As to your comment that "that is not the way language works, language is for everyone": Each year the editors of popular dictionaries such as Merriam-Webster go on TV to announce some of the new words and definitions that have been added to their dictionaries, and explain that their books try to capture modern English usage in the United States. Because of this, if a misuse of a word becomes sufficiently widespread and accepted by the population, it is sometimes added to the dictionary definition of that word, with the standard definition appearing first, and other definitions including widespread and accepted misuses as secondary definitions, as in the definitions numbers 1 and 2 that you gave.”
