Passivity + timidity of Democratic majority inthe population and inthe House + Senate can be explained by what's happened inpast 30years since Reagan --- lack of organization and burning issues. BOTH are necessary:--

Traditional Democratic organizational infrastructure, peoplepower and core beliefs built around LaborUnions havebeen effectively dismantled when Reagan began undermining unionism by executive and legislative assaults, and scattering dispirited union members by (sometimes not) cheap "replacement (scab) workers". (I've seen freelance replacement nurses flown across the country, housed in hotels, just to break legitimate hospital nurses' strike.)

Many traditional burning issues have been skillfully and systematically diffused by powers in and behind government. The VietnamWar latter stages in late 1960's was a burning issue, because every city, town, congressional district had hundreds and thousands of war casualties made conspicuous by theDraft. In Iraq + Afghanistan, the war casualties have been privatized to volunteer armedforces + militia (NationalGuard) and outsourced to highpriced mercensaries (literallyfromaroundtheworld). Taxes and nationaldebt have skyrocketed, but they couldn't be tied directly to the wars in minds of the public majority.

They believe medicare is a govt give away and do not want it expanded on their dime, never taking into account one day they might need it. I remember being that age and sure that medicare and SSI would not be there when I became retirement age. So I can relate to them while not agreeing with them.
