Strong Clerical Support for a Woman's Right to Choose Does Exist

Commented Dec 07, 2009 at 16:58:28 in Politics

“All my life I have experienced religion that I do not follow, seek to impose it's penalties on me. (I am a gay man). I have seen religion try to deny my family protections, I have seen it try to censor what we see on tv, I have seen it try to limit a woman's rights, abortion being only one way.

Consequently, I am not a real big fan of religion, but it refreshing to see someone as yourself speak out. For that I thank you.

Consider also that yes, religious fundamentalists seek to undermine health care because of the abortion angle, but also consider how large insurance corporations use these people and this issue to create a wedge in the process and to circumvent health care reform when the overwhelming reason is not religion but greed.

When this is the case, then no, other religions will not matter because the motive isn't obstinate dogma, it's simple greed. The dogma is just one weapon of many.”

“As far as your assessment that there were no people of color at the dinner, unless you personally scanned the face of every attendee, it's rather presumptuous of you to claim you know the race of every person there.

The dinner was a fundraiser. If you are at all aware of how they work, the cost to attend was probably in the hundreds of dollars, if not thousands of dollars per plate. Plenty of people, such as myself, could not afford that. Yet when the President spoke, he wasn't speaking to just the people sitting at the tables, he was speaking to people like me too.”

Why Gays Can't Wait -- Gay Rights Are Civil Rights (VIDEO)

“"The insistance of many gay people to act as if their issues are more important than anyone else is rahter disgusting."

Pot meet kettle.

I will not dispute your claim that minorities suffer high rates of unemployment. Their schools are inferior, their neighborhoods do not get the same level of protection and on it goes. I will not deny any of that, of course it is true. But that doesn't mean that is ALL we work to fix. That needs to be fixed yes, so does a lot of other stuff.

An analogy for you: A hospital sees lots of patients, some in worse circumstances than others. That doesn't mean the hospital sees only the worst, they try to see them all. I wish the best for you in your journey in equality, I wish you would see me as an ally, but you have such a chip on your shoulder, I doubt you will.

"However, you get the Presdient pandering to rich white people about how he will deliver them from oppression. I'm sorry but that is disgusting."

It's my understanding, that when he repeals DADT or DOMA, that gay people of all races will be liberated, not just rich white folks. Personally, I've never been a military person, but I am smart enough to know that the ripple effect of a repeal of DADT will effect me to a lesser degree. We are all in this together. Being hateful helps no one.”

“Note: Tanyars5 claims not to hate the gays, but she wades into every single gay issue, with guns blazing, because she is furious that they are getting any recognition, whatsoever. She feels the gays are stealing everything from the African Americans. Read enough of her posts, and out of the verbal chaos, a pattern emerges. Anytime the gays get 30 seconds of recognition, she goes on a rampage - because they are somehow stealing that 30 seconds away from her, and African Americans.”

“Steve- I find it offensive you call me hateful because I want AA's to be treated equal. BTW laws have been encacted to ensure our equality but they are ignored or not enforced. Just like you want gay rights at the head of the table, I want AA's issues at the top of the priority list. If that is what you call a chip on a shoulder then I am guilty.
I voted for gay marriage when it was on the ballot and it was voted down by whites. I am not the hateful one.
If tommorow President Obama does away with DADT DOMA or what ever four letter word is out there please understand these truths.
AA's will still have the highest unemployment.
AA 's will still suffer from disparities in healthcare, education, poverty and crime ridden neighborhoods.
However, white gays will get a step closer to their utopia. Yipeee!!
Good Luck in your pursuit.”

“The hatred towards white people in the comment section is astounding, with a stereotyping assumption that just because we are white we are privileged. I do not know what it is like to be a racial minority, nor would I attempt to equate what I have gone through with what they go through.

But discrimination and hate hit us all. I have been put in the emergency room, with an attempt on my life, because of my orientation. I was disowned by my father because of my orientation. I have hit glass ceilings in my career and been passed over for promotion because of my orientation. I have been harassed by police, because of my orientation, some of the parents at my 7 year old daughters school ostracize her because of daddies orientation.

I could go on, but the point is that gay people suffer discrimination too. And that includes white gay people. Not all of us live the pampered life of Paris Hilton and it is bigotry to assume that all white gays live pampered lives. I have no idea what other minorities go through in life and I am not comparing myself to them. I am simply saying many of us suffer too, and it is bigotry to assume we are all pampered just because we are white.

Anybody who takes the stand that "my suffering is bigger than your suffering" does their cause no favors.”

10 World Class Chefs on Twitter Who Make it Sizzle

Commented Oct 04, 2009 at 23:21:39 in Media

“Since I was misunderstood, I would like to rephrase my comment. Of course, these are top chefs no matter who follows them. That was not the point.

When someone reads a list of people, in this case chefs, one assumes that means that following them would enrich one's culinary experience. Otherwise, there is no purpose to a list.

My comment was that in this instance, that is not the case because one chef has quit tweeting over a month ago and some other chefs tweet aspects of their lives that have nothing to do with their culinary career.

So if one comes across this list of 10 world class chefs, one would be in error to assume that by following them, one's culinary experience is enriched. However, I do thank you for the list because 3 or 4 of them, as I mentioned, do tweet helpful expertise, so for that, I thank you for the article.”

TheBigVia replied on Oct 05, 2009 at 00:45:44

“"Since I was misunderstood.."

You were not misunderstood. Your post is not completely sensical. When you wrote that "one's culinary experience" is not enriched by the list because "one chef" (ONE.FREAKIN.CHEF.) hasn't tweeting in roughly a month, tell me how that makes sense. I mean, really? One chef? So, for you, it's about the frequency of the tweet and not the taste of the treat. Wow.

You also tripped yourself up. In your original post, you only mentioned @chefgui. You NEVER wrote in your original post (as you claim above) that "3 or 4" of the chefs tweet "helpful expertise". Where did you write that? You didn't.

So let's not try to demean any of the chefs on this list. Unlike you, I don't look at the frequency of the tweet, just the taste of the treat. Sorry bro, this list is hot.”

hp blogger 2morrowknight replied on Oct 05, 2009 at 00:08:19

“"..one chef has quit tweeting over a month ago.."

You are mistaken. The chef you are referring has NOT "quit" tweeting, she just hasn't tweeted in roughly a month. What does that have to do with her not being a world class chef, and, how does that disqualify one from being able to enrich one's "culinary experience"? I've communicated with that chef via email, and I'll be happy to tell you that the chef in question has been busy refining recipes, and doing shows. In fact, that chef is a good friend of @chefgui, the one chef you highly recommended in your orginal post.

As for the chefs that "tweet aspects of their lives that have nothing to do with their culinary career", well, to each his or her own. I follow Arianna Huffington on Twitter (@ariannahuff). She recently tweeted about being at a social gathering. She even tweeted this Summer about being on vacation. What does that any of that have to do with running the Huffington Post? Nothing. And guess what SteveS? I don't mind.

If you want to follow chefs that talk exclusively about sauces and aroma then that's your choice. The chefs above (including your favorite @chefgui) tweet how their culinary experiences are enriched and animated by their travels, meetings with other chefs, etc. I like that.

I hope you continue to gravitate to chefs you like, as I will continue to point out world class chefs like the 10 I profiled above.”

10 World Class Chefs on Twitter Who Make it Sizzle

Commented Oct 04, 2009 at 10:26:51 in Media

“I followed most of these twitterers upon your suggestion but then a few days later unfollowed most.

I recommend @chefgui on your list. I burnt a roast, and he twittered me through saving it. Now that is a chef on twitter!

Some of them tweet their cooking, others tweet their lives or simply links to their promotional material. (Hence the fact that some commenters and yourself didn't even know they were chefs at first). Tweeting life is all fine and good, but I think should not earn them a spot on a "chefs who tweet" list.”

hp blogger 2morrowknight replied on Oct 04, 2009 at 17:53:38

“Hi SteveS. Congrats on surviving a burnt "roast", and for exercising your right to "unfollow" anyone on Twitter you are unimpressed with.

And yes SteveS, some of the chefs above do "tweet their cooking" and "their lives or simply links to their promotional material." There are no ground rules to tweeting. And, contrary to your curious assertion, I knew everyone was a chef because, um, I read their websites, and thoroughly researched them, and cooked some of their recipes.

Oh, and SteveS, the ten chefs above are not simply on a "chefs who tweet" list, as you call it. To be clear, they are on a list of experienced, impressive, culturally rich, world class chefs "who are on Twitter". That's the way I would phrase it.

These chefs will continue making great food regardless of who follows, or un-follows them. Life goes on, and so does the sizzle!!! I recommend all ten of these world class chefs without any reservation or hesitation whatsoever.

And of course, I thank you for sharing your opinions SteveS.”

The Story That Made Me Tear Up My Prepared Speech at a Big Education Conference

“I came across some blog the other day, where the premise was getting to know a homeless person. Each post was a little youtube clip where a homeless person introduced themselves and told their story in a few minutes. The purpose of the blog was to put a face on poverty.

I think if there was a face put on poverty and on homeless children, then I think America would respond faster. Consider perhaps a "Poverty Watch" section where bloggers, both professional and non, can tell a story about what poverty is like for them.”

The Dimming of Star Power in Hollywood

Commented Aug 22, 2009 at 10:52:28 in Entertainment

“The quality of film has definitely gone down. One good example is the trading in of suspense for gore, simply for shock value. After so many movies, gore is no longer shocking and you are still left with a lack of suspense. I can't believe Hollywood can't come up with an original idea. I've got a million of them in my head, it's not that hard to do.

Another thing is the constant coverage of certain stars by the media. I can no longer see an Angelina Jolie movie without wondering who's watching her kids. I can no longer see a Tom Cruise movie without thinking of him jumping on the couch or promoting Scientology.

The stars you mention in the past, Stanwyck, McQueen, Newman, et. al. were stars on screen AND off. Now, todays stars, when they are not playing a role, are shown in a "haha, caught you!" type of picture. That also makes it hard to see them as larger than life.”

John Farr replied on Aug 22, 2009 at 15:49:10

And the more clearly this point is brought home, the sooner all Americans will have equal rights with respect to marriage. So a politician has an affair? I agree, so what? But when a Family Values Hypocrite (TM) has one and is exposed on Father's Day weekend, it is very difficult to keep silent. Especially when these same assholes are the ones preventing gay Americans from having equality simply because said assholes view themselves morally superior.”
