Laredo: No Bookstore For City With A Quarter-Million People?

“I'm in Salinas California and we are losing our last bookstore in Feb. The only one that will be left is a small Christian bookstore. (population 148k of legal residents, unknown quantity making it substantially larger since we are a sanctuary city).
The town newspaper did an editorial in this. The consensus among readers: The demographic has changed over the last decade or so. We have a generational group (young people, who thanks to texting, twitter, et. al. don't have the mind span to sit down and read a book) AND a cultural group who just doesn't read (non-English speaking immigrants who now account for over 70% of the populace). Combine that and it spells doom for bookstores.
Those of us that do read don't go to the remaining bookstore because it's in the mall, and that's gang territory right now. We either go to Borders in Sand City or buy our books online and have them shipped to our house.”

“Every private insurance we've ever dealt with (and it's a lot) doesn't pay the cost of the procedures either. In fact, most pay LESS than 80$ for a $100 dollar procedure. And you get to pay the balance, then they raise your rates, and they raise your copay.”

“It is amazing, isn't it, that every single "criticism" of anything the government proposes to do is ALREADY a problem with private insurance.
Rationing? Hmm...who does that? Yep, private insurance. (Lifetime maximums, turning you down for not getting pre-authorized, etc.)
Death Panels? YEP! They drop you if they feel like it when it will cost them too much. The law suit will cost less than keeping you alive!!!
Doctor selection? Ever hear of HMOs, the brilliant solution to health care costs? I only have one "choice" in my town.

Those who manage to stay in the middle class though, won't get coverage BUT will be required to get insurance on their own or risk fines.
Suddenly poverty is looking better than middle class.”

You will have access to the Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan (what members of Congress have) and also have access to a number of newly created nationally-based non-profits that would be negotiated and heavily regulated by the Government.
$900 billion in subsidies would go towards anyone living at 400% of poverty, giving a single person making 46,000 a year subsidies to pay for insurance, and families of 4 making up to 88,000 a year subsidies to pay for insurance.”

“No, gays are allowed to be 'comic' straight leading men (Barrowman and HP), McKellern is a character actor who is not reknowned for his sexual exploits with leading ladies in his films, and I haven't heard of the other guy. George Takei is another who was not exactly a stud in his roles.
I am not detracting from these mens performances in any way whatsoever - but I think I get what Everett is trying to say and I'm inclined to agree with him.
We can agree to disagree.
I remember Rock Hudson - the epitome of the romantic leading man - with a fantastic on screen masculine presence and yet, apparently in 'real life' a very openly gay man. It's the press that are the issue nowadays - and long lenses.”
