The Audacity of Greed

Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 09:34:17 in Politics

“You are so right. We need to analyze what has caused this attitude in America. Is it illegal immigration? Do people feel that they have nothing in common with their fellow man? What is causing this class warfare? So many questions and no one is trying to figure it out. The scary thing is that we have no feeling of one America any more. The country is very divided along ecomonic and political lines. What will it take for Americans to start caring for each other again?”

“Have you been to Chicago lately? It's a really beautiful city and would have been a fine place to visit for all the folks attending the Olympics. The trip to Copenhagen wasn't a total waste as Obama met with General McCrystal there also. Personally I was rooting for Rio because it's only fair that South America be given a chance to shine on the world stage just as China did.”

“Unfortunately, it's not just Texas. These people are everywhere. I went to High School in Texas and we were required to attend weekly sermons by preachers around our town. These were mandatory and held in our gym at a pubic school. Before every football game we had a public Christian prayer. I'm sure this still goes on. Now I live in New England and believe me, there are some of the same types here. I was recently in Wyoming and a woman refused to shake my hand after meeting me because when she asked if I was sad about Ted Kennedy's death I responded "yes". I really think our country is headed for someplace very bad unless other more educated and sane voices start prevailing. You better believe that if Bush was giving the speech every t.v. set in every classroom in Texas would be tuned in.”

Congress Is Behaving as if the Health Care System Isn't in Tatters

Commented Jul 21, 2009 at 09:18:47 in Politics

“You have said it all perfectly, unfortunately. I really do wonder if this country will ever be able to fix itself. When you take the train down the eastern seaboard you see all the poverty and neglect. I've mentioned this to others and no one seems to see what I do. I am so disappointed in the Democrats in congress. I'm glad that Obama is in power as president but I fear that it will only be 4 years and that he will not be able to accomplish all that he needs to.”

“Looking away is America's greatest skill. Seeing hardship and pain used to make us uncomfortable. Now we have a highly developed sense of entitlement (if I've got it and you don't obviously you don't deserve it) that makes it much easier to see struggle and pain with a total lack of empathy.

Someone who'd recently returned from a trip to Mexico said to me, "The poverty there is really disgusting! They ought to keep that kind of thing further from the resorts."”

Schaef replied on Jul 21, 2009 at 10:06:02

“'I really do wonder if this country will ever be able to fix itself."

The country will be able to fix itself when the people stop sitting around with their thumb up their rears, handing over their liberties to a handful of people serving their self-interest first, stand up, and actually fix it.

There are over 300 million of us living here. This shouldn't be this hard.”

“I don't know about Florida fire ants but I can tell you that Texas fire ants are really bad. I was bitten by only one and it lasted about a month. Using something like that shows the hatred that the interrogators had for the detainees. Hopefully they created some bad karma or something and they'll suffer as a result of the terrible things they have done.”

Sending Off Somebody's Brother -- Thoughts from Backstage at the Staples Center

Commented Jul 08, 2009 at 08:40:15 in Entertainment

“My sentiments exactly. CNN is no longer a news station but rather some sort of tabloid milking celebrity doings every night over and over. I feel like poor Michael Jackson, the man, is being ripped to scredds in front of our eyes by those who continue to exploit. I fear that his poor children will be hounded by the poparatsy until they have to go live in isolation somewhere. As his brother said "maybe now they'll leave you alone" but I fear not. There are too many people still hanging on his shirt tails. Why would anyone want to be famous anymore?”

702diva replied on Jul 08, 2009 at 13:25:31

“If you think CNN is bad (which they are), steer clear of MSNBC, Faux News, and HLN. Those "news station" coverage of MJ has been 10 times worse!

Look at it this way, CNN, MSNBC, etc. now have a VESTED interest in continuing the Wacko Jacko Storyline that they help create. They are going to be working feverishly to rescue their scandalizing reputations from the trash heaps were they belong; because (unfortunately for them) EVERY person who gets in front of a microphone with ANYTHING to say about Michael Jackson had nothing but positive things to say about this great man.

Thus, these "news stations" now have to prove that their so-called reporting and opinions were right about Michael jackson and all the glowing, kind, and positive things said about Michael by his family, friends and fans were wrong.

One thing's for sure, it's going to be interesting watching them twist themselves into knots to get around all the lies, misleading innuendo and inaccuracies that they have pushed about Michael.”

The Three Stations of the Cross in Michael Jackson's Calvary

Commented Jul 02, 2009 at 09:07:00 in Entertainment

“I think that you have really gotten to the heart of the matter. Michael was his father's project and he may never have recognized the person at all. All of us parents have to seperate ourselves from our children when they reach the age of reason and let them either fail or succeed on their own, painful as that might be. His father was so determined that Michael would succeed that he destroyed the person inside. He saw Michael as a meal ticket for the entire family, himself included and it turned out to be just that.”

The Healing Has Begun... U.S. Senate Apologizes For Slavery

Commented Jun 20, 2009 at 09:54:42 in Politics

“Nice article. However, it's kind of ridiculous for the American government to apologize for slavery when they did not participate in it. Slaves were purchased by rich landowners who needed them for labor. Slaves were captured and sold by other Africans. The pain that African Americans feel is from prejudice that exists everywhere. Unfortunately, slavery still exists, as you point out. I'm glad to hear that you will be focusing your energies on that via the U.N.”

“The government did participant in the perpetuation of slavery. Those rich landowners were U.S, citizens living in states that were part of the Union. The government passed a number of Compromises to ensure that slavery flourished. How sad that so many ignorant folk have no problem demonstrating their lack of knowledge on this subject to satisfy their anger towards black folks even though they say that they had nothing to do with slavery. The issue is not with any of you, but rests with the U.S. government which is ongoing and is responsible for the actions of its citizens whether today or two hundred years ago.”

Whitley2009 replied on Jun 20, 2009 at 11:44:42

“In the 1600's, Cromwell sold 50,000 white Irish adults to the Sephardic Jewish slave traders of St. Kitts and Jamaica. A few years later, he sold 100,000 white Irish children to these same slave traders. At that time, there were more white Irish slaves in the Caribbean than English in colonial America. Arabs, African tribal chiefs, and Sephardic Jews conducted the black slave trade. There were some whites involved in the overseas shipping of the slaves. Later, in America, 87% of the slave owners in the South were Jewish, and 13% so-called Christians; note, however, the New Testament of the Christians forbade slavery. In any case, like the blacks, my white Irish ancestors in called "animals" and "monkeys" and "subhuman" and enslaved by the slave masters and plantation owners. Yet, the "white man" is totally blamed for slavery.”

“Keerist!I am sick of hearing this eternal belly aching about slavery and Jim Crowism and all the other "isms"that have been concieved in the minds of persistant gripers.
Many years ago my mother came here from Poland and settled and lived out her life as the matriarch of a large family. Not once did I ever hear her complain about the slavery her ancesters lived through called Serfdom.
Not once did I ever hear her or her compatriots mention restitution from any government body for the sufferings of her ancestors.
For Keeris sake ,let it rest and let's get on with life.”

MyNameIsJames replied on Jun 20, 2009 at 10:18:11

“You need a little education. Did you know that much of the debate between the Northern and Southern colonies over the founding of this nation revolved around Slavery. The US Supreme Court settled slavery cases on several occasions, and states had laws both in support and opposition to slavery, slave trading and slave catching. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both American Presidents were also slave owners.

In many cases Africans did capture Africans for the slave trade in other cases it was kidnapping by Whites.

Prejudice that exists everywhere must be dealt with locally. BTW - Slavery is a little more than prejudice - Don't you thiink?

Sunny Day - please get a clue- From your comments - I get the feeling you are not from the United States is that correct?”
Obama v. Palin: America Picked the Right Family

Obama v. Palin: America Picked the Right Family

Commented Mar 14, 2009 at 12:06:25 in Politics

“For those looking for family values on the Republican side, Mitt Rommney would have been the ideal choice. As for the Obamas, we don't need to wait for a crisis to see how they are. Michelle comes from the kind of family that most Americans want to emulate and she will make sure that her family with Barak resembles that. Barak was probably drawn to her in part because of her family relationships and now wants that for his children. It was obvious from the first exposure that the Palins had serious problems in their family. John McCain has an interesting history with relationships also as most people know. Obama will be the leader of our country is so many good ways.”

The problem with the GOP's obsession with the extreme right, is they refuse to accept that many Independents and moderate Republicans voted for Obama, and they have trapped themselves into a narrow corner, becoming increasingly shrill and irrelevant.”

“If all that is true, then how did Bush Jr get elected? Whether or not the Democrats remain in power will depend on what kind of job they do in the next four years. The mess that has been left to them by the Bush admininstration is beyond comprehension. With the economy in the state that it is in currently many students of all races will not be able to go to college. The media wants to keep Palin in the news just because she is such a controversial figure. I couldn't believe that anyone watching the Wolf Blitzer interview thought she was anything other than a complete dunce. “Has anyone read that email going around written by the professor who ended up on Turtle Island with McCain, Cindy and their daughter? If that is indeed true then what we are seeing now is the real McCain. After all, he cheated on his injured first wife many times and openly admits it. He has admitted lying on many occasions and doesn't seem ashamed to admit it. Believe me, I even sent him money for his primary campaign before I had to admit that he's not the man to lead this country. I think, instead, that he is going to be exactly what he is now because I believe people when they show and tell me what and who they are. So far, he's shown me that he is deliberative and very intelligent, but hardly a populist or progressive. And, while I definitely think he will be better for the country, I do not think he's the guy that is going to do all that is necessary to correct what the Bushies have done. He seemed like an old grandpa lecturing some new upstart. A lot of the new voters don't know anything about all the old politicians he kept referring to. What the hell universe are you living in? You don't even need cable to have seen Bill on The View, Letterman, The Daily Show and tonight Larry King. And try reading the newspapers, also. You'll find that Hillary has been out campaigning for Obama since before the DNC.

All is jaundiced to the jaundiced eye.

You idiots won the primary. Now get on with the business of electing Obama, rather than setting up the Clintons for the loss you obviously feel is coming. So little faith in Obama, after all the talk of a "movement" greater than yourselves. It comes down to Bill Clinton's body language and turn of phrase rather than Obama's ability to connect with the American voter. I think that ability to connect is the basis of electability. Ain't nothin' nobody can do if Obama can't make that connection. And ye of little faith seem to be saying he can't make that connection.”
