Public Option Is Not Essential

Commented Sep 23, 2009 at 17:28:01 in Politics

“what about those of us that aren't low-income, yet are unable to afford the exorbitant costs of private insurance? as a small business owner with no employees, we don't qualify for any price breaks with the private insurers. our last quote (family of four) was nearly $2k per month in premiums, with copays and deductibles so high it blew my mind. it just isn't an option for us. so........what is?”

there was so much excitement surrounding this election, but the numbers don't reflect that.”

midwesthousewife replied on Nov 07, 2008 at 18:05:36

“I thought the same thing about the 2004 election. There were long lines like I had never seen before but the totals didn't reflect a higher turnout. And again this year. What gives?”

jobecky20 replied on Nov 07, 2008 at 17:18:13

“Yes I had noticed this too. Something is off. Perhaps many voters didn't complete their ballots appropriately (made errors) and those ballots were tossed. Perhaps a lot of people voted for a write in candidate, which would not be reflected in the final tallies for McCain and Obama. For example, I wonder how many people wrote in Sarah Palin or Ron Paul's name?”

“i didn't volunteer last week bc what happened to me the week before is still all i can think about. we knocked on the door of an 87 yo registered dem and he raised his fists, screamed "get out of here!!" and chased us away when he noticed our o t-shirts. my d2d buddy reminded me of the awesome mother and daughter we had spoken to just a few blocks before who were so excited we had knocked on their door. but i had never myself felt such vitriol from another person before and it, unfortunately, has stuck with me.”

onlinesavant replied on Oct 08, 2008 at 23:53:08

“Sorry to be somewhat callous, but let me ask you a question. How many positve experiences did you have? I am almost sure that you had more neutral to positive ones than you did this one with this old (In mentality.) man. My point is that if you allow your perspective to concentrate on negative experiences as opposed to positve ones, then your overall experience will be negative. My suggestion, refuse to accept negativity. Reject it and embrace only the positive. This is a choice that you and only you can make.”

“You said he was 87...perhaps he was exhibiting some alzheimer's dementia or had had a stroke and was not in control of his own emotions and behavior. Please, please, try to put him in perspective and do not let him deter your efforts to make a real and positive difference in the world.”

amazingdays replied on Oct 08, 2008 at 15:46:29

“I am so sorry you had this awful experience. Virtual hug from a fellow volunteer! Maybe if you do the "brush it off" gesture on your shoulders that will help you smile a little about it. Also, our field organizer reminds us that Barack has personally knocked on more doors than any of us ever will, so he is not asking us to do anything he wouldn't do.

I bet that if you really do not want to door to door again there are plenty of other volunteer activities such as tabling at Obama-friendly events, data entry, preparing canvassing packets, folding literature for mailing, and so on.

On the other hand, if you can get past this horrible person, maybe you could try a little more door to door and perhaps tell the person who's assigning packets that you are looking for a friendly neighborhood to help you recover a little. At least your experience ensures that no other Obama volunteer will have to deal with that idiot and time won't be wasted on trying to get out their vote.”
