This Is Not Just America's War

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 11:52:41 in World

“It's not an Afgan problem. There is no "Afgan" solution.

It's using the military, not agronomists. Food not bombs.
It's about ending fedualism, which requires industry.
It's about the seething resentment Muslims have about the treatment of Palistinians.

Afganistan, is about root cause and treating root causes. Success will not come from salves on symptoms.”

“Good numbers:

24.4% of their sales revenue on promotion, versus just 13.4% for research and development.

In 2000, every $1 pharmaceutical companies spent on DTC advertising yielded an additional $4.20 in sales.

24.4% x $4.20/$1.00 = 102.48% of revenues are then based on advertising. ???

I don't think so. A Large percentage of revenue is based on DTC advertising. It's not that large.”

JustMyWords replied on Aug 23, 2009 at 16:05:12

“There's no way you can take these two sets of numbers and turn them into one formula. Or at least, you can't turn them into a meaningful formula. You don't know how many dollars are spent on promotion, or what portion of that promotion takes the form of DTC advertising.

But what your numbers DO show is that pharmaceutical companies spend almost twice as much of their revenue on promoting their existing products as they do creating new products.”

peacebro replied on Aug 23, 2009 at 00:43:24

“Bad numbers:

Your formula is wrong and so your results are too. With what you have you can only surmise that they netted $3.20 for however many $'s 24% is. No amount of revenue can exceed 100%”

Obama, Progressives and Health Care Reform

Obama, Progressives and Health Care Reform

Commented Aug 22, 2009 at 18:48:08 in Politics

“The naiveté of this comment is staggering:

"They worry that the public option, which has somehow come to seem -- wrongly, in my view -- as the only meaningful measure of significant reform"

If there is no "Public Option" and the Insurance companies are forced to stop their denials, both of coverage and payments, they will find new ways to grow revenues and profits.

What will these be? The starting point appears to be Insurance Companies lobbying to increase what they don't pay from 25% to 35%. The insurance companies have then managed to cut 10% off their costs, the consumer is stuck with the "savings".

OK, so they get more money for "Individual mandates". What happens after that boost in earnings? Their cost are cut by 10% (see above), but after this boost, their only way to grow is to increase prices.

What then? Their earnings will fall, as prices rise and people don't pay. Then what? More increases more non-payers and a death spiral to the last?

Truly stupid, truly stupid thesis.”

Obama Calls For 'Honest Debate' On Health Care

Obama Calls For 'Honest Debate' On Health Care

Commented Aug 22, 2009 at 11:53:29 in Politics

“Let’s explore the consequences of 1, 2 and 3

1. Medicare will go broke, as the Republicans wish, and Medical Insurance Premiums will double in 5 years, leading to 150 million uninsured, and the old geezer teabaggers will meet the real Death Panels, Republican YOYO.

2. Force poor Republican and Democratic people to pay money for no health care coverage from the Insurance companies. The Insurance Companies will continue to invent new and improved ways (like only paying 65% a claims) not to pay for procedures. As Republicans want, the Mandate makes the IRS and the Federal Government the true enemies of the poor. The Mandates will result in widespread civil disobedience, 150 million FICO scores of 500 or less, punitive interest rates, and the rich will continue to extract regressive rents from the poor. The Military will have to suppress the riots and insurrections with violence, but who cares, they are only the poor.

3. Provide the "Public Option." Obama will have to stare down the Health Care corporate interests, and the Health Parasites are just the first of the corporate interests to confront. If Appeaser Obama had really taken on the finance bandits (Oh, I’m so scared of being the angry Black Man), he’d not have to stare down this industry. To cut health care costs Obama will have to stare down Big Food & Ag, to clean up fast food, cheap fats and expensive veg.”

“To an uneducated moron, myself, the choices are clear:

1. Continue with the present system.

2. Impose a Mandate to Pay our Insurance Overlords, and raise premiums by insisting they spend more money actually treating us.

3. Provide a meaningful Public Option to compete with insurance companies, and if its successful break the Insurance Companies, stop Big Pharma from stealing taxpayer funded research for obscene profits, Break Hospital holding companies, reduce Doctors’ incomes and break Big Education by outsourcing Doctors’ education to Cuba. Cuba, who can graduate Doctor’s for 1% of the US costs.”
