“Good numbers:

24.4% of their sales revenue on promotion, versus just 13.4% for research and development.

In 2000, every $1 pharmaceutical companies spent on DTC advertising yielded an additional $4.20 in sales.

24.4% x $4.20/$1.00 = 102.48% of revenues are then based on advertising. ???

I don't think so. A Large percentage of revenue is based on DTC advertising. It's not that large.”

JustMyWords replied on Aug 23, 2009 at 16:05:12

“There's no way you can take these two sets of numbers and turn them into one formula. Or at least, you can't turn them into a meaningful formula. You don't know how many dollars are spent on promotion, or what portion of that promotion takes the form of DTC advertising.

But what your numbers DO show is that pharmaceutical companies spend almost twice as much of their revenue on promoting their existing products as they do creating new products.”

peacebro replied on Aug 23, 2009 at 00:43:24

“Bad numbers:

Your formula is wrong and so your results are too. With what you have you can only surmise that they netted $3.20 for however many $'s 24% is. No amount of revenue can exceed 100%”
Obama, Progressives and Health Care Reform

Obama, Progressives and Health Care Reform

Commented Aug 22, 2009 at 18:48:08 in Politics

“The naiveté of this comment is staggering:

"They worry that the public option, which has somehow come to seem -- wrongly, in my view -- as the only meaningful measure of significant reform"

If there is no "Public Option" and the Insurance companies are forced to stop their denials, both of coverage and payments, they will find new ways to grow revenues and profits.

What will these be? The starting point appears to be Insurance Companies lobbying to increase what they don't pay from 25% to 35%. The insurance companies have then managed to cut 10% off their costs, the consumer is stuck with the "savings".

OK, so they get more money for "Individual mandates". What happens after that boost in earnings? Their cost are cut by 10% (see above), but after this boost, their only way to grow is to increase prices.

What then? Their earnings will fall, as prices rise and people don't pay. Then what? More increases more non-payers and a death spiral to the last?

Truly stupid, truly stupid thesis.”

What is the UK's term for those who provide the essential public service of taking bets; is it, "turf agent"? There also a vile pejoritave(sp?) who provide employment oppourtunities for sex workers. The USA need more non-pejorative euphemisms at once.
BTW, WTF is a better euphemism for campaign contributions to re-elect persons who are elected officials? Politician is an ugly pejorative that is as ugly as pimp,or whore. or hooker, or street-walker, etc.”

I'm English. I speak English (You don't speak english, you speak american). We recognizze the Welsh & Scots & Irish ae just that, not English. We are all British.”

reasonshouldrule replied on Aug 16, 2009 at 01:20:52

“You don't really know what I speak. But "American" is not a language. There's American English, Canadian English, Australian English, British English (and many others). They are all English. Yes, you are all British, but that word comes from one stream of the original Celts. Originally, British and English peoples were enemies. But it's usage again. Just like people calling British government policies English programs. When people speak, language develops.”

reasonshouldrule replied on Aug 15, 2009 at 22:56:54

“Of course the Welsh, Scots, and Irish are celtic. You misunderstood my message. But you are wrong that I don't speak English. I do. You are provincial if you think you are the only ones in the world who speak this language. English is spoken in many parts of the world, and British English is no longer the acknowledged standard.”

Republicans and Health Care Reform: Who's Divided?

Commented Aug 07, 2009 at 15:45:54 in Politics

“" The Democrats are deeply engaged in this important issue, struggling to find a way to pay for the health care our country needs"

Bullshit. Single payer was removed as an option. Leaving nothing.

Making anything from waht is left is a futile and unproductive struggle.

The enemy of perfect is not good. The enemy of perfect is nothing.”

JustBNice replied on Aug 08, 2009 at 12:18:42

“We need a march on Washington for Single Payer.

It makes so much sense. Would save everyone money, help the economy, no more business and personal bankruptcy due to health insurance or medical costs. Everyone would pay into the system, including illegal immigrants if just a tiny consumption tax was part of the plan. Buy a product, you just made a contribution. There could still be health insurance for the rich. There are many ways to make it simple and make it work.

I hope those who oppose a government run plan will refuse Medicare when they turn 65.”

agoodlife4me replied on Aug 07, 2009 at 18:05:13

“Food for thought

For any insurer, either private or government sponsored there is a balance between service to the patient and costs for the service.

Right now, if the bill is passed and there is a democrat controlled legislature the prevailing opinion is that service to the patient will be paramount and taxes will raised to pay so everyone can participate.

However if the tax revolts are real and not just 'astroturf', it' is most likely that the balance will shift another way. Funding will be reduced to relieve pressure on the taxpayer, leaving service to the patient to suffer.

Single payer is not the way to go, it is a prison, subject to the whims of the elected officials in government. A government that changes hands periodically.”

In the Senate the prime sponsor is Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) and the bill number is S 752. There was a hearing in the House Administration committee on July 30 for HR 1826. The organization whose primary focus is passage of the Fair Elections Now Act is Public Campaign, and the principles are Nick Nyhart and David Donnelly. Go to their site and get involved. You better believe that every big gun in Washington, on the right and on the left, is going to be trained at this legislation. Remember the difficulties of getting "campaign finance reform?"
