You're a Student of History, And I'm Not

Commented Dec 15, 2009 at 00:49:14 in Media

“Americans assume technology trumps history, but they're forgetting that past invaders had vastly superior technology and still ended up getting kicked out.”

jcwtts1 replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 01:52:53

“Forget the British. It wasn't recent enough to be relevant. The Russians would be a great argument. I've heard it from Harry and from other people as well. One problem. The Russians invaded Afghanistan and crushed them. Crushed them until another superpower covertly entered the war. We dumped what amounts to a billion dollar in weapons, we added satellite help, we added serious tech and we taught the Afghans, including Osama, how to shoot down modern aircraft. That is why Russia lost. Russia wasn't losing and then we jumped in and helped them lose more. They were WINNING when we entered the fray. Now if you take that into account, also you have to take into account that we don't want to stay. This isn't a life long occupation this is a stabilization with a couple of military bases. Big ones. But just some military bases. We aren't fighting the Afghan people and while we've done a lousy job making that point, we aren't done yet. We'll have more success than the Russians did.”

Four Lessons for Democrats in Tuesday's Elections

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 17:22:35 in Politics

“The biggest lesson in this election is that the year after a presidential election -

nobody cares.

How do we know this?

Nobody votes.

Why do you think political machines put unpopular issues to a vote on off year elections? Their tiny minority of lockstep lackies show up and cast the majority of the votes.

The minjority defeats the speechless majority.”

FirstShirt replied on Nov 04, 2009 at 19:10:35

“See, this is where the democrats have failed in their assessment. Obama brought out voters because he was who he was. The liked him and still do and even the vast number of voters, including republicans, still like him as a man. BUT, they voted incumbents out. So, Barry has no coattails. The independent party switched and will switch again in 2010. Result? A wave of republicans back in Congress.

Course, you will still have Barry.”

“I read a lot about factory farming, thanks to Michael Pollan's books and Peter Kaminsky's Pig Perfect. This article is the most laserlike focus on the crux of this issue that I've seen so far, and its eloquence should be shared with as many people as possible.

I commented earlier in the Grubstreet blog when they said Jonathan Safran Foer was upset that Anthony Bourdain didn't immediately become a vegetarian upon hearing his arguments on "Larry King Live." I dismissed this as either a calculated ploy for an unknown vegetarian author to get publicity or just plain dumb.

After reading your impassioned masterpiece, I am ordering this book.”

New Orleans is simply waiting for a catastrophe to destroy it, and if that happens, a return to national prosperity is vastly less likely. Obama in New Orleans -- Is That All There Is?

Commented Oct 12, 2009 at 10:25:20 in Politics

“What has he (and his party) done? Battled the Foxpublican thwartocracy.

Handing over money to Wall Street. That was GW Bush.

Getting back on topic for this thread, the issue here is that there is a clear and present danger staring us in the face only a few years after a disaster caused by this same danger.

Harry's not blaming, he's prodding. Considering the stakes, we need to correct this problem NOW. Do we really want Harry to be the only person here with a clear conscience if something happens?”

luziannagirl replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 08:43:00

“Staying for a second off-topic, what President Obama DIDNT do is stop giving gazillions to the very Wall Street banksters who got us into this mess in the first place, and he hasn't pushed through any new, toothier federal regulatory oversight to prevent the exact same thing happening again.

Mortgage foreclosure rates are still very high---and in some areas, the only reason they haven't gone even higher is that everybody's already been foreclosed on and their houses stand vacant, driving down the price of everyone else's house.

And, home values have still not been "marked to market", or else the losses to these gargantuan, bloated, Jabba-the-Hut-esque Wall Street institutions which have been allowed to rule our lives in so many ways---would sink them all over again.

And that's all I can think of off the top, Tags. So much for our republican thwartocracy battler-in-chief.

I expected a little better, didn't you? At some point, even the finest words are only words when not backed by any action.”
