“I've been thinking the same thing-----the news coverage has been sooooooo "fair and balanced" on this issue! It is definitely more entertaining to show the angry "mob" and the gun toters, than it is to show a peaceful and productive forum on a crucially important topic like health care reform! This is not the time for "entertainment". It's the time for progress.”

Pot Saved My Life, Mr. President

Pot Saved My Life, Mr. President

Commented Mar 26, 2009 at 23:58:25 in Politics

“I e-mailed the President after seeing a replay of his absurd answer to the question. He dodged that one, but what he was really dodging was another "controversy" or "distraction" from his push to get this economy going again. That bothered me, but I doubt it will be the last word on the topic.

Millions of people smoke marijuana----from all age groups and walks of life. It is hypocritical to live in a society where alchohol and nicotene are legal, but smoking marijuana is criminalized. What purpose does it serve to waste millions fighting the so-called "war against drugs" on marijuana? What purpose does it serve to jail our fellow citizens for smoking pot?

I don't know what it says about the "online community" that so many asked the question about legalizing marijuana, but it doesn't seem like our judgement was in question when we were raising money , donating, and working to help elect President Obama. I wonder how many on-line contributions were by people who support the legalization of marijuana? We deserved better, but I understand why he felt the need to answer like that.

What bothers me is that in this society we don't seem to be able to make rational decisions, but have no problem making irrational judgements, and clinging to the inability to move past archaic beliefs and moral posturing.

The Federal government could do everyone a favor by focusing on drug education, prevention and treatment, rather than enforcement and penalties.”

Gretel1or2 replied on Mar 27, 2009 at 09:31:19

“It wasn't the president's response that was absurd; it was the mass hysteria about his comment being 'offensive,' 'disgraceful,' 'disappointing' and 'mocking' that is abusurd.

First of all, anyone who knows Obama's self-deprecating style of humor ought to understand that he laughed because he sees the irony of the popularity of the question coupled with the fact that he knows that he himself used illicit drugs as a youth, and that the public is aware of it. Why would Obama be dissmissive of or mocking people for smoking Marijuana when he did the same thing and more, and up to recently admitted that he has a cigarette habit. I think Obama was thinking more along the lines of "...Hmm ... I can totally relate..sounds like a question I would have asked and it's too funny for words.." and not "...these dumb potheads can go to hell for all I care."

What is disgraceful, disapppointing and offensive, is that many people on this blog chose to interpret his behavior as indicative of the latter, and some are being rather vindictive by threatening to "punish" the president by not voting for him or withdrawing their support.

The constant microscopic scruitiny of every joke, gesture or words used by the president is ridiculous and counter-productive. I think generally the president has the best interests of the people and I'm confident that he is doing his best to keep his campaign promises without undermining his long-term strategies.”

“D*mn straight, there's already plenty of populist backlash and our President doesn't want to get caught on the wrong side of it! Here's one of the causes of my personal populist backlash --- Because I took money out of my IRA, after losing a bunch last fall, I now owe good 'ole Uncle Sam appx. 1/3 of it--- which is probably a lot more than many millionaires pay in taxes each year! This populist is one hair away from open revolt! And BTW, Mr. President, try not to spend my retirement money (taxes I have to pay on my IRA withdrawal) on another middle-Eastern war, ok? Personally, I say get all the troops home and we'll see a big drop in our deficit within a short period of time. Sounds good to me!!”

“Unfortunately, the Democrats made themselves look like a bunch of idiots by taking the position that they would not seat anyone appointed by Blago---- and now they have to eat crow. Also, Mr. Burris does look like he's smirking when he smiles. Hopefully, he's not, because most of us don't see anything funny in this Keystone Kops routine that's been going on over the Illinois Senate appointment. It leaves a bad taste in our mouths. With the big, fat mess this Country's in, we don't need a bunch of self-absorbed politicians playing endless games. “graffen48: You've got THAT right!!!! The auto workers, their families, and everyone else who in some way benefits from the survival of the domestic auto industry, should take an example from the employees of the plant in Chicago that just closed down with a couple days notice because Bank of America wouldn't lend them money----after B.of A. sucked up tens of millions in govt. TARP funds. Those people, and their supporters, have got the right idea.

All working people in this Country will keep getting the short end of the stick if they don't unite and do whatever it takes to get our "representatives" (I use the term loosely) attention. If that doesn't work, a crowd of millions dragging Bush out of the White House might give them a hint of what's to come.

Where is the leadership? Is there anyone out there who is actually a leader of the people? If so, now would be the time to step forward.

And isn't it convenient how all this crapola is taking place a couple weeks before Christmas, when people are busier and more distracted than ever? I'll tell 'ya this--- Washington, D.C. STILL doesn't "get it"!”

“So---- who was defending CEO's pay? As far as I'M concerned, there's not a CEO anywhere in this Country who isn't overpaid, compared to the people who work for them!

I've owned at least 20 GM vehicles and have had problems with one. A 20/1 ratio isn't too shabby...... I guess I'm just LUCKY. Yeah, right! BTW, I am well aware that the Japanese auto companies didn't "just start making cars when they opened up here"--- however, since THEY have national health care in Japan, I guess THEY don't have legacy costs w/ HEALTH INSURANCE, now do they? Geesh!

No wisdom to share on the crooks, liars and robbers of Wall St. and the mortgage/financial industry?”

Commented Dec 05, 2008 at 16:01:35 in Media

“I've been at a slow boil for the past several weeks as our "Representatives" play games with the domestic auto industry, playing Russian roulette with the jobs of millions----all the while forking billions over to Wall St., and the crooks in the mortgage industry who caused the housing market crash. No one from Wall St., or any of the failed financial institutions, have been made to grovel at Congress' feet. Nor has anyone been held accountable for the crimes they comitted and their unethical behavior. Nope---- the rich b*tches (gender nuetral) got THEIRS from the U.S. taxpayer, while industry has been systemactically destroyed in this Country.

The latest kick in the rear is the failure to secure the LOANS that the Big 3 needs to survive. Poor practices and decisions have been made by the industry. However, Sen. Shelby's criticism of the Big 3 fails to acknowledge that there is no way they can compete with Alabama's Honda and Toyota plants! Shelby fails to acknowledge that the transplanted companies have NO legacy costs. They've not been here long enough to have the liability of hundreds of thousands of retiree pensions or health care costs. Comparing consumer preferences, and quality and performance measures, the domestic autos are scoring as high with consumers as the imports. I absolutely LOVE driving my 2004 Chev. Impala on my 90 mile/day commute. This car kicks butt at 108,000 miles!

There's plenty of blame to go around.....!”

ohboy replied on Dec 05, 2008 at 16:21:18

“Honda and Toyota did not start building cars when they opened plants in the U.S. Also, they don't pay their CEOs anywhere near what "American" automakers do, but that's because they have a better understanding of competitiveness and innovation. BTW, glad that your Chevy runs well. You'd be one of the lucky ones.”

BTW, since when does demanding the same media and public scrutiny of Palin that Obama, Clinton, McSame, etc. have been going through for the past 19 months give license to charges that someone is "going after" Palin. Here's a little clue--- if someone was really "going after" Palin, she'd be mincemeat by now. She doesn't have a leg to stand on other than with the women who believe that voting for ANYONE capable of wearing a skirt is a good thing. And not to leave some men out, some of the male McPalin fans will be voting with their little heads---not the head that sits on their shoulders---judging by their hot and bothered reactions to her!”
