A Hard Look at Education
Commented May 11, 2009 at 10:58:00 in Politics
“I don't know if you will read these comment or not. I am not a Catholic anymore, but I did send my children to Catholic School. They manage to educate students at all levels. So if you want to model schools after a successful already established system, model public schools after the Catholic schools. You know no religion class. Secondly, begin allowing professionals to teach in your schools. Give crash courses in methodologies and law and allow those people who have solid degrees in math, biology, English, etc., to teach . My Psych teacher in high school was a PhD in psychology. Administrative reform is imperative, and I mean when it comes to what schools evaluate as a qualification to teach.
Consider since every student does not attend college that we go back to having high schools with industrial, skill based options, including carpentry, auto mechanic, welding technology, and an entire array of professions that take other kinds of training to really prepare all students. Meaning those teachers will more than likely be skilled workers trained in Union Schools, Apprentice Programs, etc. There are so many changes that will be necessary. If politicians are serious and they will quit politicizing education and seek solutions together with academics and the public.”

“I agree, Teri...esp ecially with your second paragraph. Yes--leveled and specialized diplomas! Yes, skilled trade training! Catholic schools do often produce excellent results, HOWEVER, you cannot discount the importance of the student body difference between catholic and public schools... Children who attend Catholic school have parents who value education enough to pay for it and/or research the quality schools in the area.”

LET'S ALL GET KILLED BY VOLCANOES!!!

“I live really close to Mt Rainier and Mt St Helens, so I think I can monitor those volcanoes for everyone, although you might not get my message if and/or when they blow.”

“Back in '92, I was visiting the spectacular northwestern states. I stopped for some coffee at a roadside rest stop about one hundred miles from Seattle, and I could see Mt Rainier in the far distance.
However, I wasn't sure it was Rainier, because I just couldn't believe you could see it from that distance.
I went inside the building to ask the attendant if the mountain in the far distance was indeed Mt Rainier. Unfortunately, instead of saying Mt Rainier, I asked about the "volcano in the distance."
"VOLCANO!" the attended cried! Out the door he went, and I could hear an audible sigh as he realized the mountain in the distance was still dormant.
Mt St Helen's eruption was clearly still a vivid memory for folks in that area, and I learned how touchy the word volcano could be.”

Why So Many Pundits Wrongly Scored the Debate 'Even'
Commented Sep 27, 2008 at 21:58:25 in Politics
“I think that is correct, but one additional event happened, that I think swayed voters greatly and that was the R's behavior during the last week, trying to cancel the debate, heading to DC because he was going to save the day, but then he didn't save the day and he went to the debate he threatened to cancel. It was erratic and surreal and I think most American's saw what amounted to the behavior we see in teenagers when they do not get their way.”
