“Thank you Floyd for adding this! If any other posters want to know more about how sea ice affects our climate, check out the Snowball Earth theory. It's not a new idea. snowballearth.org is a good site to start!”

“It would be nice, if someone can explain the difference on such forums in brief. It will help. Will try the site tho'.”

Obie The Obese Dachshund's Custody Battle: Mo' Wiener, Mo' Problems

Commented Oct 29, 2012 at 05:21:09 in Weird News

“This is awful! Poor Obie! I also have an overweight dachshund. His name is Charlie. We found Charlie running the streets in 2004. Having two other normal dachsies, we quickly decided to adopt Charlie into our family. And we soon found out that Charlie was hiding some secrets under that cute little face of his. After six months of living with us, Charlie started to gain weight, and gain weight, and gain weight. After extensive testing, many months in the doggie hospital, lots of different medications, a membership to the "doggie spa" for water excercises, and several different low calorie dog foods, our vet decided that Charlie has an eating disorder, a hyperactive thyroid, and is depressed. Our Charlie is fat, despite low cal food, a daily excercise routine, and thyroid supplemental hormones. We have given it our all, and upwards of $6000, to help our little one lose weight. He just refuses to drop the pounds. He goes to the vet on a regular basis, and is in no way , mistreated or abused. It's not fair to knock Obie's owner for him being fat. Some dogs, like people, are chunky. The French family is hoping that the rescue group will come to their senses and let Obie stay with people who love him for the way he is.”

Jim Henson Company And Chick-Fil-A: 'Muppets' Makers Sever Ties With Anti-Gay Fast Food Chain (UPDATED)

Commented Jul 24, 2012 at 11:38:35 in Gay Voices

“I am very happy to hear such a well known brand as the Muppets is celebrating diversity and being whomever you may be as they have always done. No company would proclaim to be against persons with mental handicaps, redheads, lefties, young children, people who like the color green, blondes, freckles, blue eyes, buck teeth, et cetera... It would be business suicide. I agree that Chic Fil A has the right to announce and stick to whatever policy or belief they
Ike, but openly discriminating against anyone?”

trthsetsfree2 on Jul 24, 2012 at 12:42:21

“Chic-Fil-A does not openly discriminate against gays. They merely are exercising their right to support their cause.”

tinacorrina68 on Jul 24, 2012 at 12:35:41

“I believe he just stated that he believes marriage is between a Man and a Woman. He is as intitled to think that as someone is intitled to think and openly state they believe otherwise. I dont think he said gay couples would be refused service so where is the discrimination? The only discrimination I see is against Chick-fli-A because they believe in the union between a man and woman and not same sex marriage. I believe marriage should be between a man and woman does that mean I should not be allowed to run a buisness. Why was he asked such a question anyway? What does sexual preferance and chicken sandwiches have to do with each other?”

“I'm typing this on my new MacBook. And it's really, really nice. The screen display is amazing. Worth the price? Dont know yet, but my iBook has lasted a good nine years and is still running very well. The only issue I have had lately is the screen darkening. After five iPhones, three iPods, two iPads, an iBook, Apple tv, and an Apple desktop, I have to think Apple makes a great computer. But that's my humble opinion.”

“Same here my three kids wife and myself had an iMac for 9 years, no problems. My kids were not the delicate types either. The people on the block replaced their Dell's or had them serviced every two years. I still use the iMac since it has photoshop and I can't afford the latest version. We only bought a new iMac to upgrade the screen size and navigate the Internet.”

49 Schools Closed, Now What?

Commented Aug 14, 2013 at 21:58:43 in Impact

“Very proud of you and those other parents! Thank you a thousand times over for taking on the challenges of a non-Blue Ribbon school, many parents would have run in the opposite direction as quickly as they could. Many more parents would have simply prayed their child got into the lotto school and took NO action to make neighborhood schools rise up and improve.”

“Holy Cow! Why don't these people give money to a few teachers in their local school buildings instead of a PAC? A PAC is not how to get money to the schools, the teachers know that's the best way to get the money directly to the children that need it the most. And let's face it, money is what the teachers need to buy supplies to make the classroom a more engaging, cooperative, fun, learning environment.”
Reading Statistics: Traditional Books On Decline, Survey Says

Reading Statistics: Traditional Books On Decline, Survey Says

Commented Dec 27, 2012 at 13:45:16 in Books

“Digital or paper? A book is a book! If an American child, adolescent, or adult is reading SOMETHING, who cares. In 2011, the National Institute for Literacy estimated that 47 percent of adults in Detroit, Michigan are "functionally illiterate," meaning they have trouble with reading, speaking, writing and computational skills. A study done by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL), involved lengthy interviews of over 90,700 adults statistically balanced for age, gender, ethnicity, education level, and location (urban, suburban, or rural) in 12 states across the U.S. and was designed to represent the U.S. population as a whole. This government study showed that 21% to 23% of adult Americans were not "able to locate information in text", could not "make low-level inferences using printed materials", and were unable to "integrate easily identifiable pieces of information." Further, this study showed that 41% to 44% of U.S. adults in the lowest level on the literacy scale (literacy rate of 35 or below) were living in poverty. Roughly 40% were at either basic or below basic levels of proficiency in all three categories. The study identifies a class of adults who, although not meeting criteria for functional illiteracy, face reduced job opportunities and life prospects due to inadequate literacy levels relative to the requirements of contemporary society.
This is sad, perhaps if more of them were able to own an e-reader this statistic would be lower!”

leticeberry on Dec 28, 2012 at 09:15:33

“Maybe schools should provide e-readers to students that they can use throughout their school years.”
