Will The Unemployment Disaster Be Obama's Katrina?

Will The Unemployment Disaster Be Obama's Katrina?

Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 09:30:23 in Politics

“I certainly don't claim to know what the answer to rising unemployment is, but I definitely agree that the issue does not appear to be getting the attention it deserves. And there are people in government and in the administration who should be able to figure something out, whose job it is is to do just that. It seems to me that if unemployment continues to rise, and more and more people lose their jobs or are unable to find new ones after becoming unemployed, then it really doesn't matter what is happening on Wall Street. This needs to be addressed, and soon, and decisively. It cannot continue down the path it is currently on.”

“Well, that will show them. Gays want to get married, then the homeless must starve. Yeah, that makes sense. Every day I see something else that makes me wonder about our society and the priorities we place on things. This is just another stupid example.”

“I absolutely feel a sense of shame. This sort of thing should not happen in this country, of all places. I get angry every night when I see the continued fight that is ongoing in the political arena while people like those in this post are suffering every day. They can't afford to just sit and wait to see what happens. Health care should be available to everyone, regardless of their status in life. I am lucky enough to be healthy and have good health care coverage, for the moment. But that "for the moment" is what scares me because I know it could all go away in a heartbeat if circumstances align just so. I hope we see real change very, very soon.”

When Freedom Is a Dirty Word

Commented Sep 23, 2009 at 10:28:37 in Politics

“This post is a heartbreaking example of just how frightening people that believe as this couple do really are. What's even scarier is that they want to force those extremist beliefs and practices on the rest of us. They are the poster children of hypocrisy. They spout pro-life, but they let a child die of a treatable disease and kill doctors who perform abortions. This after preaching abstinence. We all see how well that works out. It's sickening and it's frightening. It's unbelievable.”

“Every time Anthony Weiner talks, I'm impressed with his logic and reason on this subject. The Democrats would do well to listen to him. He makes sense and the single-payer does seem like the best solution to the health care crisis in this country. I think if it would actually pass, it would be so popular and so successful that everyone would just shut up and be satisfied. Oh, that's the problem, isn't it? That's just what the Republicans are afraid of.”

“This is appalling. You know, I always find myself thinking that the major difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is that Democrats truly and sincerely work toward trying to better people's lives, to set agencies and such in place to help people who really need help, while Republicans are constantly afraid someone is going to cheat them. They have an "I've got mine. You go get yours, and leave mine alone" attitude. I hate to speak in generalities and I hate to even voice these feelings because they seem so cut and dried. But every day I read another story like this one, where only the location and the players may change, but the sentiments remain the same. I'm sorry, but the Republican party is full of people who profess to care about their fellow man, but in reality they couldn't care less, as long as they and their followers -- yes, followers. I use that word deliberately -- get rich and fat. Prove me wrong, somebody with power in the Republican party. Prove me wrong. I've been waiting a long time to see it.”

erikh replied on Sep 02, 2009 at 17:51:43

“Actually I know very few Republicans who profess to care about their fellow man. The ones I know are the "I've got mine, you're on your own" types.”

Obama Is Right, His Critics (Right and Left) Are Wrong

Commented Sep 01, 2009 at 15:11:00 in Politics

“You know, this post seems right on the money to me. I, too, trust Obama. Sometime I get a little discouraged, but I think it has more to do with the media coverage than the reality. I do think Obama has good instincts and is better able to make these things happen than we sometimes are able to see. Good post. I enjoy reading the things you have to say.”

MThomasNC replied on Sep 01, 2009 at 16:59:18

“Terriac, I agree w you and Mr. Schaeffer. I trust Obama to do the correct long term thing. The media needs puffery, and uses it to keep the masses stirred up. I am afraid the current crop of republicans are a wild, insincere, doubledealing group. But Obama got their number - didn't he beat the Clinton and republican machines in 2008.”

Michael Jackson: Beyond Great

Commented Jul 02, 2009 at 17:44:05 in Entertainment

“I was of an age when Michael Jackson was at his peak when I could have been a fan, but I was more of a rock fan and didn't follow him that closely at the time. Of course I heard all the stories about him, the seeming weirdness that he was descending into, the changes in his appearance. All the things that detracted from him as a performer. Even then, though, I recognized true talent. Since his death, I can't seem to get enough of the old videos of his performances and hearing him sing. I am transfixed. I regret that I didn't go see him live when I had the chance. One thing that always hits me when I watch these videos is how completely he transforms. Gone is the man who seems so childlike and unsure of himself. You forget the facial transformations and you get totally lost in his performance. He becomes seemingly a different person. He is riveting. His untimely death is so very sad. I like to think he still had it in him to be great again. He obviously loved his work. RIP, Michael. I hope you're in a better place and can dance and sing to your heart's content.”

"It Hurts To Be Me": Confessions Of Michael Jackson

Commented Jul 02, 2009 at 12:42:56 in Living

“There is so much sensationalism and so many conflicting stories flying around about Michael Jackson, but I think your article probably comes about as close to the truth as anything I've seen. There is much we will never know about him. I do think he was a tortured soul in so many ways, as it seems many that are gifted with such enormous talent often are. I really don't know, obviously, if he's ever harmed a child, but I've always kind of believed that he didn't. His story is a sad one. He left behind a great legacy. He was a huge talent. Perhaps we should just all remember that and forget the rest. Thanks for a beautiful article.”

The Facebook Promise: Cool Or Just Cold

The Facebook Promise: Cool Or Just Cold

Commented May 18, 2009 at 10:23:53 in Living

“I love this article. This sums up very well the way I feel about Facebook, Twitter, blogging, and even text messaging, which has almost become the only way my teenaged daughter communicates with her friends. While I see where connecting with people via these means has its good points, I also see what I fear is a distance between people, where they are slowing losing the fine art of real communication. I tell my daughter that she is missing out on the warmth and intimacy that really you only get when you speak -- actually speak, via physically talking -- with people. Yeah, texting and Facebook are convenient, but I do think they are cold and ultimately unsatisfying. I hope the pendulum will swing back the other way at some point, where people crave the closeness and warmth of an actual conversation with give and take and free exchange of ideas. I don't think my daughter's generation really knows what that is. And that's sad.”

Inhofe: Obama's Judicial Nominee is a Secret Muslim

Commented Apr 21, 2009 at 14:37:33 in Politics

“How long are we going to let these people continue to call people Muslims, as though it were a dirty word? Not every Muslim, by any stretch of the imagination, is a terrorist. In fact, most are not. And every news outlet buys into it by repeating it as if it had merit. This fear of Muslims, just for the sake of nothing other than that some people are Muslims, has got to stop. It's irrelevant. Muslim, not Muslim. Who cares? It's whether they're terrorists or dangerous people that matters. And that's not the sole purview of the Muslim community. It's idiocy, and we need to stop allowing it to go on.”

“This country desperately needs health care reform. This example is multiplied over and over again in families across the nation. And yet, the Republicans will stand in the way of any changes, no matter how critical the need, just as they do on the economic reform. This is a prime example of "There but for the grace of God, go I." This story could become anyone's story. And it is quietly being lived by too many people right now. It's time for a change.”
