Supreme Court Ruling Speaks of a New Kind of Public Defense

Commented Apr 7, 2010 at 18:00:05 in New York

“As typically happens when uninformed, axe-grinders post their comments, the message of the post is forgotten. They should re-read the article, re-focus, and realize that there's a systemic problem with our criminal "justice" system (ditto with family court and the multitude of govt agencies that indigent.clients deal with) Hopefully, those that are in the fight for the right reasons will do all they can to redefine public defense so that the public defender is focused on the person and not just the case - the sytem sorely needs the concerted effort.”

JacksonHts on Apr 8, 2010 at 22:36:27

“Well, except in case you havent noticed, the author of the article seems to have her own axe to grind , that is to promote her particular public defender's agency's way of handling cases with immigration consequences and taking a way out of left field cheap shot at Legal Aid.”

“All so-called msm should be turned off. It's all corporate driven, so we don't get truly honest reporting. The wiser course of action is to do our own research, not relying on some talking head to tell us what the facts are. That said, I check a variety of sources - NY Times, Democracy Now, Press TV, Al Jazeera, HuffPo, Drudge, Jim Lehrer and Friday's on PBS, NPR, and The Nation.”

“use pubmed please. It is a free resource for searching the medical literature. All the above sources are based on interpretations of the primary literature. If you really want to do your own research use pubmed or the index medicus (if you want a paper version). Then, when you are sufficiently well educated... do your own research for real. Gather data, analyze it. it must be really easy since you all say so.”

If it was not okay for Biden what is the difference that makes it okay for Obama? Crediting the author after you get caught is trying to pay the bank back the day after the robbery.”

“As usual, Billary and their supporters go back on their word. Two times now Hillary has lied to us. We're still in the primaries. What happens if she became president? All the promises she's making now go out the window.

Lie # 1: Along with all other dems, she agreed to not count Florida and Michigan. Now, like Bill being against the invasion of Iraq from the beginning, she was against this approach all along.

Lie #2: Along with Edwards and Obama, she agreed to not debate on Faux News Channel. Now, since Fox treats her better than MSNBC, she wants to debate on Fox.
Nominate Obama. Nuff said.”

“Awesome post. Obviously, there's more talking than doing right now by all of us. Kucinich was robbed, just like all of us are being robbed of our true democracy. If we want to "do," maybe we start by boycotting NBC, GE, Raytheon. Sucks for Keith Olbermann, but we gotta start somewhere. GE kept their candidates in line with their questions on nukuler waste and military recruiters on campus. Unless we "do" something like boycott, GE and the other corporations will continue the status quo and we'll continue blogging (bitching) about it.”

Causing Unrest at Guantánamo

Commented Apr 27, 2007 at 21:56:59 in Politics

“This govt doesn't care about anyone but their military-corporate agenda. All 3 branches have failed us on this, and all fundamental legal issues.

Even against one of their own Navy JAGs (Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Diaz who is being prosecuted for releasing the names of those prisoners to CCR habeas counsel while he was assigned to the JTF), the investigating agents AND the prosecutor abused the national security letter legislation to obtain his personal AOL emails and read his correspondence with his attorneys. They are not shy about it either and are asking the military judge to allow them to read all of his personal emails in hopes of finding evidence to use against him. The military judge is going along with this fishing expedition and at the same time denying Diaz discovery he needs to defend himself.

I hope the May 1 push is the beginning of the end of this awful place called Gitmo.”

Descending Into Hell

Commented Apr 20, 2007 at 14:17:49 in Home

“Descending Into Hell is the perfect name for this piece, but I'll bet there are lots of Iraqis thinking it should be called Descending into Iraq. This nation is recognizing a national day of mourning for the students and faculty killed this week, which we should be doing. But what if we had to have such a day everyday, as they do in Iraq. Except they can't gather as easily in a campus hall to hear their leader mourn with them - it's not safe enough. NBC showed its viewers reality with the materials they released on air. If they would only show the reality (dead bodies) of the war on the Iraqi people, maybe this nation would come to its senses and demand an end to all the bloodshed.

This nation needs a wake up call. Anna Nicole, Imus, Sanjaya, Virginia Tech, and now probably Alec Baldwin and how parents are supposed to talk to their kids. I can hear O'Reilly now, "No wonder liberals are so messed up in the head - it's ingrained at a very young age." Is this stuff really the most newsworthy, deserving 24/7 coverage? Wake up to the real issues affecting the great majority of us. Sure, deal with real underlying issues, like gun control or the possibility the govt will try to use this week's events as an excuse to curb more of our rights, but don't dwell on the "breaking news" so much that we don't learn what else is going on in the world. Do people know there are just as many contractors as troops in Iraq, many of whom are armed mercenaries in violation of the Geneva Conventions? Maybe they're also getting their urban warfare training like the jihadists so they can translpant that experience here to the homeland to keep us in line.”

“American imperialism is quickly dying and that's a good thing. The silver lining contained within all the ills of all those mentioned above is that American domination of the world has been weakened, even though most of us don't realize it yet. We are but one nation on this planet and should not be imposing our will on others. Whether by the continued failed policies of Chimpy or by choice (though this option won't be realized until we have a progressive president), America's empire is coming to an end.”

Follow the Real Money -- Updated

Commented Apr 2, 2007 at 20:43:46 in Politics

“I, too, hate the fact that our leaders are the ones who raise the most money. Until that changes, if ever, I think we take advantage of the opportunity we have here. Let's see how honest Hillary's camp is on all this. Her 50,000-some donors have big bucks, we know that. Obama surpassed her by 33,000-some donors. Will Hillary and the MSM point out the fact that one donor = one vote? Or is it really the money that matters? Is it that the money will help ensure the big spender "wins" the election Chimpy-style? Let her raise lots of money. We need to ensure she doesn't win the primary, that's all. Richardson, Edwards, Obama, in that order. This could change should Gore get in.”

Supreme Court Rewards Administration's Delay and Obfuscation Strategy On Guantánamo

Commented Apr 2, 2007 at 16:21:00 in Home

“Our only hope is that Dodds or Leahey and Spector follow through with their promise to restore habeas review and to scrap most of the DTA and MCA. This so-called Supreme Court just confimed to the world that we are a very hypocritical nation. It was bad enough that the executive and legislative branches were acting in tamdem to harm our national interests. Now the last bastion of hope, the judiciary, has joined this fascist trend. If we keep putting fascist/corporatists into these key offices, we deserve everything we get. We can no longer blame the govt - it will be our fault. Our last chance is to restore habeas so those disingenuous federal judges can exercise jurisdiction and hear these cases on the merits - which they'll find (and most already know) are meritless.”

Senator Obama, Congress Has Many Options Besides Full Funding Without Withdrawal

Commented Apr 2, 2007 at 15:48:54 in Politics

“I would agree with the criticism of Obama's comment if that is what he in fact said. The link to the Washington Times article is a non-starter for me. What I read was the Times' spin on what Obama and Rangle said.

Here's the final quote from the article, "Still, Mr. Obama said: 'I don't think that we will see a majority of the Senate vote to cut off funding at this stage.'"

The majority did not cut off funding in the current bill. There's more funding than requested by the president for the troops (along with some "pork" that was necessary to get the bule dog dems on board - but no bridges to nowhere). The president and his rape-ublican and blue dog dem allies will be cutting the funding by the veto and their insistence that no withdrawal languange be included. The funding is there. The dems need to stick to their guns lest they be seen as weak. To not be able to stand up to this weak prez and weak rape-ublican party, how can we expect them to stand up for what the country wants and needs in the years ahead? As Sen Webb said in response to the state of the union, if the prez can't figure it out, the democratic congress will show him the way. Congress is showing him the way with this bill. They cannot now let the prez show them the way back to stay the course. If Obama or Rangle or any other dem is thinking of backing down, they will pay at the polls.”
