“you cant do this by age 21 at best?”

ladyv replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 09:29:47

“If mommy and daddy put you through school so you can attend full time every semester, of course. Those people tend to be the ones whose mommies and daddies hook them up with jobs straight out of college, though.

Statistically speaking, 27 is the average age that a person with a college degree in this country gains the opportunity to purchase their own health insurance. Doesn't matter whether they didn't have to work and graduated at 22, or did have to work and graduated at 25. 27 is still the average age when that person will hire into a full time position with benefits. Temp work, part time, etc, doesn't afford that person the opportunity to get their own health care.”

NeoStar9 replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 08:42:55

“No. Even if you finish college in four years and are out by the age of 21 you can still be out of work for several more years . Not everyone is able to find a job right out college. Some degrees almost require that you move on to graduate school or some kind of specialized additional training as well before you can even be considered for a job in your field.

You can also end up job hoping those first few years as well resulting in coverage going up and down like a yo-yo.

It's strange, is the US one of the few countries that think it's normal (many however don't fit into this I believe) to simply cut the connection as soon as the child reaches age 18 or 21 and say they are on their own? I read somewhere that other advance countries don't do that.”

boyoboy replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 07:15:58

“No. Even if jobs with paid benefits were plentiful, kids don't graduate for four to five years after HS graduation (longer if they go to graduate school). Do the math.”
