The Future of Publishing Isn't Rocket Science (It's Sustainability)

Commented Oct 07, 2009 at 14:17:26 in Books

“Ms. Goodman,

This is a great article, however, you should note I'm already way ahead on this game. My novel Where Did This Come From? by Larry Nocella tells the story of a man who becomes rich when he finds a rare mineral in a fictional South American country. The main character then learns the cost to the local native tribe of his American Dream and sets out to right the situation. But how do you turn the tide of desire and greed? How do you fight insatiable want?

The book is available as Print-on-Demand; each copy printed is a copy that's purchased, as opposed to what I call Forecast-and-Recycle, the much more common (and more wasteful) book printing method.

I also donate a portion of the profits from Where Did This Come From? to offset the book's carbon footprint. Where Did This Come From? has been named the first CarbonFree novel in the world according to CarbonFund.org.

The book is available on Amazon as print and eBook, and I blog often about the challenges a new author, concerned with the future of books and the future of our planet, faces. A sample of eBooks vs. Paper books here: http://bit.ly/3qCYZw

Much more on my site. Hope you like it, and I hope you'll try Where Did This Come From?.

Keep up the great work.

Rare AP Photo Captures Deadly Attack on U.S. Marine in Afghanistan -- Pentagon Protests

“Mr. Mitchell, I think your post is a bit oversimplified, though this may be due to the fast-moving nature of the net and you have not yet had time to update.

You do not address the fact that the family of the slain marine begged the AP to not release the photo, they felt it would be disrespectful. Here's the link where I read that - http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/26759.html

I'm in favor of publishing things to enlighten people to the horrors being committed (of ALL kinds by ALL peoples) but when there is a direct request NOT to, I personally would hold off.

Thinking about it cynically: there are plenty of marines dying and surely there will be another photo available soon enough. Or, failing that, describe it in words.

Incidentally, I just launched a hashtag myself, #fearofthemonth - to speculate on what the next GOP Republican Conservative scare tactic will be. Can be funny, true, false, unfunny, whatever. Try it!

Thanks! See you in the tweet-o-sphere! (?)

Excellent points, mate. For all of those who went crazier over Obama's cordial hand-shake with Chavez, I'd like them to honestly say that in their workplace they never, ever are cordial with a rival. It never makes sense to posture angrily even if you intend to attack someone. The talking heads know this, they're just looking for any ridiculous thing to yell at Obama for. News flash: Chavez didn't tank the economy: Americans did.”

“Mr. Weber - nice article. I tend to agree. As a human who wants to see more compassion, I'm pleased. As an American who wants to see more ideas, I'm concerned, but not too much. I think the Republican party will abopt the ideas of the Libertarian Party, since the GOP has no ideas of its own. Then we'll have the same old debate: should working class people get a piece of the pie (roughly the Dem approach), or should working class people get what the rich toss out as scraps? (The GOP approach and to some extent, the Libertarian approach.)”

HarryPumpkin replied on Apr 12, 2009 at 13:15:26

“I'd like to see more compassion, too, but I think we see compassion differently. Anyone can be in favor of having the government forcefully take money from one person to give to another and feel morally superior for that position. That's easy, but it's not true compassion. True compassion is willingly giving one's own time and money for those in need.

That's the conservative's position on compassion- that it's the individual's responsibility and not the government's. And there are statistics that show that conservatives do a good job at practicing such compassion- even better than liberals. There are also statistics that show that government welfare programs discourage personal charity. “Who cares? The stock market ( & our 410k retirement accounts) continue to fall apart. The wall street dislikes or doesn’t believe in the stimulus package(s) so far. Unemployment is high and will get worse... I want to either see the fed govt get completely out of the way (ie: just cut taxes - such as the fed income + corp taxes by say 50% for a couple years- and do nothing else special economy wise)...or show real leadership and use executive authority to take back the 1st bail out package under bush plus seize all assets of the clearly identified corrupt rich (ie: maddoff, Stanford, the exec of BOA, citigroup, AIG, etc...many of the other insider stock traders that are still at large, etc) and then confine them for an indefinite period of time like Guantanamo bay military prisons... Simply put we are tired of treason being Ok. It is not OK to lie, cheat & steal if you are rich enough or have the right friends...in spite of what both political parties have allowed.”

Of course we now need a redistribution , and it needs to begin by prosecuting these fat cats who've been collecting $100,000,000 salaries ,,while every one else takes a hit..And now the Bush Admin. has these same foxes guarding the hen house. this is a profound time we are in ...GREED v.
