“Yes he did, but most here don't realize that to avoid being drafted by enlisting in your college's R.O.T.C. program was a great way of avoiding being drafted to go and fight in Vietnam. Doing so and then being dismissed for whatever the reason(s) was the second part of that "avoidance", and was the ultimate "Get Out Of Jail" card for the serving..

Some of us are still old enough to remember those days, and remember the tricks that most of the well to do and others used to avoid being sent to Vietnam which was another sad moment of history in this country's history.

God bless the Miltary Industrial Complex and those who serve in the ranks who prosper from advancement when the young go to die for their fortunes.”

“War is fine, but let's bring back the Draft and have everyone in this country share the burden of war by having everyone's sons and daughters on the front line equally: Think there will be much support for any war with a draft in place?

I think not.

Why is it that the share of this war burden fall on less than 1% of the American population?

Becasue the poor, and down and out of any society will enlist if there is nothing more to look forward to in their lives in terms of quality of life, and pertinent economic purpose. We have the "perfect" volunteer armed services people machine: But don't worry, this is not our own sinister invention, it's been used before by other cultures, and in other times.”

“I agree, but would take it further. Let the CBO report be public with just what the costs would be if there were a Single Payer plan in this country for all.

It's time we stopped taking the crap they feed us and demand the numbers, and healthcare for all.”

TruthJusticeForAll replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 07:23:06

“Believe the CBO stated the cost of the public option for the first decade is $1T & for single payer $600B. Single Payer saves almost 1/2. That 1/2 comes from the insurance & pharmaceutical companies. So of course, the politicians are against it. Flopsie & the Democrats will celebrate when they sell us down the river with health insurance purchase mandate.”

Single Payer.

Period.

Let's get real about this "Healthcare Reform " thing, and use our heads, people. It doesn't require starting over from scratch to build it as they have told us, as most of it is in place via some minor administrative modifications.

Yes, We Can - Now, Just Do It!”

“They may as you stated, voted "center/right, but you need you understand what "center/right" means in that country. They didn't vote out their healthcare system, or their paid for education system along with some of the other"socialist" programs that they have had, and enjoyed for years now.

Before throwing labels around, it is best to understand the other nations "body politic", and understand what moving to the right, or the left in terms of labels means. It's different in different countries, and the measuring stick isn't the U.S. and our terms and definitions. As far as lowering taxes across the board, you best understand their tax system as well, and how it works within their economy.

Other countries are not moving toward our way of life, they are so far ahead of us that a slight shift in their social/political lifestyle is still light years ahead on the quality of life yardstick than what we have to put up with. Don't fool yourself - Get out and travel to other countries and you will see just what I am writing about. The Republican model you so admire is ridiculed in other countries behind our collective backs.

Been there - Heard it.”

ClareP replied on Sep 30, 2009 at 09:19:34

“Yes- their "center-right" includes many positions considered purely left in this country, and is far to the left of the current Republican party.

georgewetherill is not wrong to say that there is a problem with the lack of a center in this country-- but unfortunately, currently the repubs have moved collectively so far to the right that pretty much none of them qualify. They have falsely shifted what would ever have been considered "centrist" in this country farther and farther to the right -- really, farther right than most Americans actually are. The left has caved repeatedly to the pressure to shift right, so there are very few who would still be considered "left" by the standards of 30 years ago.

If you can successfully push for a center right party, george, and oust the extremists, then please, go for it-- we would all be better off.”

I wonder if and when someone does a real thorough investigation as to just which Blue Dog Democrats are associated with this religous Anti-American terrorist group known as "The Fellowship"? I know our Blue Dog Whip congressman Heath Shuler of the 11th district in western North Carolina is, but our major newspaper The Asheville Citizens Times newspaper ran away from the story about this when Shuler's office said "Boo" when they tried to find out. Funny how that went down.... I guess we simple NC bumpkins aren't meant to know these things.....(but many of us already do)!”

Oil's Largest One-Day Gain On Record: Thank You, Mr. Bernanke

Commented Jun 06, 2008 at 21:37:37 in Business

“Actually, if you figure in the amount of your tax dollar that goes to the budget to keep the military (ours) in their jobs of guarding (Saudi Arabia, and the Iraq debacle), and keeping the oil flowing from the Mid East (Navy fleets in the Straits of Hormuz), then the price of a gallon is already over $8.00 a barrel to the US citizen. You just aren't paying directly out of your pocket at the pump, but you do every April 15.

How much do the other countries take out of their high taxes to put toward their military working to guard the oil cartel and their buddies??? It appears to me that their governments are the smart ones working for their citizens by giving them a society that provides far more than what we get from our tax dollar via services.

Remember...We elected "oil boys" into the Presidency, and Vice Presidency.”

SolarPowerGuy replied on Jun 07, 2008 at 17:24:27

“"...the price of a gallon is already over $8.00 a barrel to the US citizen."

I just re-read this. It's confusing.

Do you mean that there is an $8/BARREL externalit,y resulting from the military subsidy? That's how I initially read it when I replied to you the first time. The United States uses about 20.7 million barrels/day...

http://www.eia.doe.gov/basics/quickoil.html

...which is 7.55 billion barrels/year. Multiply by $8/barrel and you get a subsidy of $60.4 billion/year. That's low by a factor of two to three, but it's in the ballpark.

Alternately, did you mean the externalized military subsidy, by itself, means that gasoline should cost us $8/GALLON right now? With other externalities included, I might agree. But the military portion of the externalized costs are not that large.”

SolarPowerGuy replied on Jun 07, 2008 at 17:11:09

“Agreed. The cost of using the American military to preserve access to Mideast petroleum resources is an externalized cost, which is not paid at the pump. There are also at least two OTHER externalized cost categories associated with petroleum use.

First, and most obviously, there are all the tax breaks received by the oil industry. Some Democrats in Congress tried to get those subsidies revoked this year -- and how far did they get?

Second, there are costs to human health and the environment. If you include the potential losses from global warming, the environmental costs can be huge. A "fair price" of $15/gallon of gasoline was computed by one study.

I don't subscribe to numbers that high, but I'm sure that there are at least a few dollars per gallon in externalities.”

ZuluKilo replied on Jun 07, 2008 at 05:56:06

“This is nonsense. Please don't post such flagrant BS here without at least taking a token look at the numbers.

Even if you were to tack the entire $400,000,000,000 US Defense Department Budget onto the price of gasoline, it would only raise it $1.20 from its current $4.00 (30%).

A more reasonable estimate of the impact of our military efforts to protect the free flow of oil should probably be no more than 35 cents a gallon.

As far as other countries go, I have a hard time understanding how the citizens of Saudi Arabia and the other OPEC nations (most with standards of living far below are own, including Saudi) are not subsidizing our grossly overconsumptive, unsustainable, SUV-driving ways.

Get a clue. And a calculator. Please.”
