Please try to get your facts straight before jumping to conclusions.”

“I remember how, before McVeigh was arrested and linked to the bombing, the "usual suspects," of course, were Muslims.”

FaceTheTruth00 replied on Nov 07, 2009 at 18:43:30

“Well to be fair, prior to that time, we had the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, which was carried by Muslims. Also, prior to WTC 1993, we have never had a major attack on civilians on U.S. soil. The public, and the government certainly had a right to some suspicions after WTC93. As such, I certainly don't remember an all-out campaign or accusations against muslims for OKC. Just the fact that people considered it a possibillty, based on prior actions, is not some great crime, in my opinion.”

The Strange Bedfellows of the Census Boycott

Commented Oct 31, 2009 at 14:44:32 in Politics

“The nice thing about census boycotts is that the tinfoil hat crowd partaking in them tend to lose representation in the government. It's a win-win, really. We don't want them making our laws, and they don't like government.”

blizb replied on Nov 01, 2009 at 15:54:40

“Exactly, and they lose.

I think the real reason they don't want to know the true census this time is the number of ethnic groups may actually have risen to a level they don't want to admit.

That means they would have to campaign and include groups their racist agenda won't support.”

Obama's Choice: Failed War President or the Prince of Peace?

Commented Oct 25, 2009 at 19:48:09 in Politics

“We've already gone the "failed war president" route many times before. Let's take the "prince of peace" route for once. After all, the 21st century is still young!

Also, could we use a term other than "prince of peace?" I like Obama a lot, but please let's not deify him!”

NC4Obama replied on Oct 26, 2009 at 01:53:14

“So the peace route = letting Afghanistan go to its own fate? Which will likely lead to even more deaths.

I am tired of people comparing Vietnam to Afghanistan, completely different wars, its fine if you want to argue we pull out but don't use Vietnam as your excuse.”

Collision: Is Religion Absurd or Good for the World?

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 14:06:14 in Living

“I have no problem with the idea that belief in the scientific method as a means to determine that which cannot be directly observed may constitute a form of faith, but that point, no matter how valid, has nothing to do with the comment to which you replied, and so I reiterate:

Atheism is simply the lack of belief in any gods. It is derived from the Greek roots "a" and "theos" which mean "without" and "god." That is all that it means.

To assume that everyone who chooses not to believe in the existence of any gods will automatically gravitate towards science is at best naive and at worst, intellectually dishonest.”

Shelbel replied on Oct 22, 2009 at 15:21:15

“I didn't make that assumption, so please don't put words in my mouth. I merely said that *many* (not all) atheists gravitate towards science. However much you may want to keep reiterating what the term "atheist" means, it does not detract from the fact that atheists do believe something, and that whatever anyone believes requires faith. Everyone has faith in an authority. That authority may be scientists, teachers, parents, God. It doesn't matter. Everyone has faith. The only question we need to ask ourselves is, "In what authority do I place my faith?"”

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 13:51:23 in Living

“I would also add that when a theory that is a product of scientific inquiry is later disproved, people in the scientific community generally accept that rather than clinging to the old theory as an article of faith.”

Collision: Is Religion Absurd or Good for the World?

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 08:44:04 in Living

“Pastor Douglas Wilson's argument arises from the misconception that atheists take the complete randomness of the universe as an article of faith, and from that mistaken conception, he concludes that atheism is necessarily an exercise in self delusion. He fails to take two elements of atheism into account:

1. Atheism is not, in any way, a unified, monolithic, or comprehensive ideology. The only commonality that atheists have the world over is their lack of a belief in a supernatural supreme being. That is all.

2. Atheism is not a faith or a religion (see point #1). Some atheists have faith in some things, others do not. To assume that the basic premise of atheism is that the universe, not having been created by a supreme creator-deity, is completely random, is to read too much into an ideology that doesn't exist. Also, as a side note, the laws of physics, last time I checked, were not completely random.”

Shelbel replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 09:25:40

“It may be possible to say that atheism does not require faith, although I completely disagree. However, whatever anyone believes about anything does require faith. And atheists do believe something, usually based on scientific interpretation. Even though one may say that there are "data" that lead to certain "facts", those data are interpreted based on a set of presuppositions. One has to have faith that they have been taught and believe the correct presuppositions. One has to have faith that the method of interpretation is correct. One has to have faith about these things because no one can possibly know they are correct or true. How many things did Darwin believe were true based on his hard science that we now "know" are incorrect or false? How many things, one hundred years from now, will future people say we were morons for believing? No one alive today, or yesterday, or a hundred years ago, or a thousand years ago, was alive when the universe came into being, so no one actually "knows" anything about it. There is only belief based on interpretation of data, and that interpretation of data is based on a series of presuppositions. That is faith.”
