“Fresh cheeses such as cottage cheese can be fat-free or low fat without being harmful”

HerrMonk on Oct 17, 2011 at 15:50:30

“Yes, but I hate it when it's labelled "low fat". Cottage cheese is what it is... which is pretty much just protein. When I see something labelled "low fat" I generally assume that through some process the fat that should be in the food has been removed, either chemically or mechanically.... or that the marketers are trying to appeal to consumers ignorant enough to be more interested in their product if they think the fat has been chemically or mechanically removed.”

“Two issues come to mind. Firstly I wonder whether this was deliberate. The restaurant got great publicity, great free marketing, though there is legal risk. I think many people would end up going to such restaurants in the hope of being served booze and soft drink prices:)

Secondly my knowledge of chemistry/biology is slim. I suppose the child didn't drink much since she didn't like it but she got alcohol ingestion overdose. Is that possible from consuming a small amount?”

“McDonalds has never forced anyone to buy their products. Consumers should take responsibility for the choices they make. What about restaurants and pubs that have beautiful waitresses/waiters, attractive decor etc. Should they be considered evil?”

jamesvw on Apr 16, 2011 at 16:02:56

“How do you define "forced"?

Force is crude and obviously not acceptable in a "civilized" world
Marketing propaganda is much more effective
It's subtle and doesn't ring alarm bells
but is just as effective, if not more

A lie told 100 times becomes the truth

Choice is an illusion
when it is manufactured consent”

“Lot of bad consequences as a result of McDonalds. On the other hand lets not forget the benefits - the hospitality industry has created jobs, increased consumer spending etc. Sure the negatives outweigh the positives. There are many countries that don't have McDonalds, KFC and other global chain. This does not stop people from eating unhealthy”

Let's Ask Marion Nestle: Does Factory Farming Have a Future?

Commented Apr 13, 2011 at 15:19:20 in Food

“I think factory farming will continue to exist as long as humans are indifferent and unwilling to pay higher price for non-farmed animals. And it does not seem like demand is subsiding. If factory farming is banned, I wonder if the industry will come up with other 'innovative ways' of meeting demand in a cost effective manner, creating a new problem. Note that factory farming did not exist long time ago, it came about as a result of a need for cheaper meat.”

“I read an article (can't remember the source) which concludes that a full monty is actually healthy. According to the article eating lot of fat first thing in the morning increases metabolism. Furthermore eating a fatty meal is less likely to result in craving for sweets, snacks later. On the other hand if you eat light there is more chances of you craving sweets, snacks etc. During the course of the day the fully monty eaters did better than the non-monty eaters, consumption wise.”

“No, I'm not confusing cause and effect. In response to the statement made by Stephen "Animal flesh and secretions are the number one cause of heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis I was merely trying to make the point that there is no right answer, vegetarians get heart attack, meat eaters get heart attack.”

I-US on Feb 25, 2011 at 00:10:21

“Let me try it for you this way. Heart attack is the leading cause of death in India. Non-vegetarians make up the majority in India:

“Are there any studies supporting this. Consider these facts:
- A significant percentage of the Indian population are vegetarian and heart attach is the single largest cause of death in India (http://india.gov.in/citizen/health/heart_attack.php)
- vegetarians are more prone to heart attack than non vegetarians (http://www.india-server.com/news/vegetarians-more-prone-to-heart-attack-583.html)”

I-US on Feb 24, 2011 at 16:13:44

“For the first point, you are confusing cause and effect. Here's the response: 90% of the US population eats meat and heart attack is the single largest cause of death in the US.

For the second point: that article, on the one hand, mentions a genetic predisposition for heart disease unrelated to diet, and then ties it to possible protective values with B12 supplementation. What that article seems to be suggesting is that if one has a genetic predisposition for heart disease, then B12 supplementation might offer protection against suffering from it.”

“I agree with you that meat based diet is capable of causing deforestation. The point I am trying to make is "tinkering with it without much thought will put the system out of balance and create bigger problems down the line”. This is unknown territory, is vege production increases significantly it will create problems that most of us don't anticipate today. The fast food industry probably didn't anticipate 50/100 year ago the impact it is having today. My point is that this requires careful consideration, a simple switch from meat to vege will solve some problems but may create other unanticipated problems down the line”
