“No, John_Shenale, thank you for YOURS ... of course, it is possible to stay down at geekhood most of your life. Nerd is not the lowest possible rung ... many of the paralegals I'd met had it all over me. They were to be aspired-to in the vast musical chairs game that is life; while, of course, still knowing the meaning of life, ya know? You actually have to Graduate from being a geek to being a nerd to being a wonk, essentially.”

“"It takes a special kind of mind to do this job"

Yeah, what certain East Coast ethnic groups used to call "a corkscrew mind" ...

"A nerds value IMHO is based on their contribution to the real 99.99% world .
Not to line the pockets .01 %"

Lawyers are not nerds. They are wonks.
Most architects are wonks.
Actuaries are wonks mistaken for nerds.
Many musicians, [even these days!] are wonks.

Nerds don't have to be productive, either.
The difference between a nerd and a wonk is a matter of socioeconomic class at birth, taken as a weighted factor against acquired style and meritocratic advancement.”

“"We've all gotten used to talking about the problems with law schools and the thousands of underemployed, debt-addled JDs that they graduate. But perhaps it's time to start taking a similarly critical look at business programs. As the Wall Street Journal illustrates in a piece today, it looks like the U.S. now has a glut of MBAs."

“Lawyers are wonks. Wonks may not be the Big Men/Women on Campus, but they have flash, style and taste ... as compared to the sterotypical "nerd". I never for one moment thought any of them were nerds. I'd been attracted to the paralegal field for a time; unfortunately, paralegals - Erin Brockovich notwithstanding - are really the nerds of the legal field. But any legal-field nerdhood is not my type of nerd, so I left.”

“Yeah, just like the bobos, the discount store customer (did not say "dollar store" - pretty much avoid those) gets the philosophy and the mission statement thrown in, without the attached price tag that generally the bobo pays ...

The thing is, some of the customers to a Housing Works may never get the bobo's experience of having "traded up" ...

It's best to ignore the philosophy then, because too many of them assume an aspirational value in having the real thing, i.e. "designer store ______ without the designer store price tag" ... or "gently pre-owned by zillionaires" ...”

“Well, it's better than the New York Magazine or __(insert other trendy upscale geographic rag's name here)___ with their "newest real estate prospect's categories" or "which kind of consumer are you?" or "what neighborhood were you meant for?" lists ...

I am personally insulted, my category (gotten from the BlueKai online quiz and subsequent invitation to opt-out - from as many things at one time as I reasonably could) of lower income, was not included. Because it's square (and undesirably so), and unexploitable to be that cheap but still avoid shopping in the dollar store, or continuing to live in a locality that is SO ANTI WAL-MART WITHIN ITS CITY LIMITS ...”

“Personally, "wasting" time on not squirreling away that which I did not have, means I got a head start on other things. A big head start. I do like money (sadly, in the abstract mostly), but sometimes health and sanity are more important. Unfortunately, many of us have to choose. Understandably, with many boomers as with the current crop of young graduates, a surfeit of higher education has proven to be a questionable-at-best "union card". What cost these young people much money (in student loans and such); had cost me much time ...

I hate to read stories about already highly educated boomers "going back to university" by age 60 if they had been laid off, even with a large nest egg; even if studying in a field with prospects. So happy - at very least - the author had sense enough NOT to suggest THAT in the list ... or was that to be included in the Part 2 article?

PLEASE don't ....”

“Hey, some of us kind of couldn't help choosing to have the economic slats ripped out from under us. Could not choose having been long-term unemployed. Could not choose losing their houses to a disaster. Could not choose chronic illnesses of themselves or a family member (sandwich generation, anyone?)

But I guess "retirement" is only a dream to those people, right?

Enjoy your happy, lucky traditional retirement.”

BigPictureReg on May 26, 2014 at 21:01:57

“Everyone has circumstances.

With respect to the choices presented to you, a retirement plan can be started much earlier, by anyone, and altered as necessary along the way.

I've had layoff, divorce, alimony, child support, IRS tax liens, failed businesses, and all starting from a childhood in a household with 4 figures in annual income. Through my own set of setbacks, different from yours, I've still managed to look upon my 60th birthday with some semblances of a plan that I first put into place more than 2 decades ago, albeit with numerous alterations to make my reality and my plans merge.

Starting the plan at 60 means that a lot of time has been wasted along the way.”

“Yes, yes, yes!!!!

Nailed it!

I'm a lot lower on that Maslow Scale of minimum creature needs being met, than the author's intended audience ... but still I understand where this author is coming from.

"First world" aspirations, directed to a class of people where steady, career-related employment and sizeable nest eggs to this point are assumed. Not relevant to many people on this Earth (got that point taken care of - yes, I know I'm better off than if I were in deep, dark Africa; but we're not talking NIMBY here ... just reality)”
