Life Sucks And It's Society's Fault

“By the way, It really irks me when people use my screen name in their arguments.
It's funny how many people don't realize what pragmatism is. In the field of philosophy, it is a concentration on facts rather than emotions, feelings, or ideals. It is a preference in focus in the practical over the aesthetics. That is the opposite of what your article is about.”

“Wow. All this positive attitude makes positive action crap is really annoying.
A positive attitude won't get you anywhere if you can't feed yourself. A smiling face won't get you happiness if your house is in foreclosure.
So cut the mental candy crap already...you're going to make me barf.”

“I hate to disagree with you but I do. I know people who are having bad times and their positive attitudes are being blessed with people who would go out of their way to help them, like me. I love helping someone who is NOT complaining. I makes my heart swell with love for this type of person. Life is NOT ALWAYS ABOUT COMPLAINING. It's about caring for one another and when we do, there will always be someone caring enough about you to help. With your attitude, I would not feel good in helping you.”

“Hey Tired: use your pragmatic side and re-read these pieces - or not - if you do, try noticing the part that says without action, nothing happens. And it seems to me to pretty hard to do something without some idea of what it is you want to do in the first place. Of course, if you feel like barfing when you read these pieces, it might be worth considering why you read them in the first place?”

“You put it crudely but correctly.
This is a "social disease" of people who have more wealth than they know what to do with.
Worry about what you need. Food. Shelter.
Worry about what is important and you have some influence over. Family. Friends.
How big a house do you need? Do you even need a house?
Do you need a car? Maybe - most of the US isn't accessible without one and you probably need one for work. Does work require that you buy a large, expensive car to park outside your place of work for 8 hours a day? Get that in writing and write it off on your taxes.
If you find yourself miserable because you don't measure up to the life styles promoted on television, stop watching television. Cut the cable or tear down the antenna. Realize that you made a horrible mistake with the large screen HD TV and get it out of your house. Read. Take control of your entertainment, don't let it control you. TIVO is a false god.”

“Again, you really don't understand biology.
Did you also know those stem cells, even though they can become any cell and now even gametes (eggs and sperm), will still maintain the sex from the person they come from? Shocking isn't it? Males make nuclear DNA lines and women make mitochondrial DNA lines. That's how life works. But since you are a laymen reading from the Daily Mail, I guess you wouldn't know that.
Also, what metalboi said:
"Do you live in the United States? People have the right to reproduce whenever they wish here. They don't have to be married. Secondly, how is the choice to reproduce not a right? Thirdly, I dare you to come up with one good argument defending your position that reproduction by same-sex couples is unethical. Just one argument that I can't strike down with the standard techniques of argumentative writing. Good luck!"
Have a nice day.”

“Huh? Yes, only females pass along mitochondrial DNA, because that lives in the egg and is not part of the sexual reproduction process that forms the nuclear DNA.
These gamete cells created in Stanford are probably the same sex as he person they were created from, you are right. They probably haven't yet created sperm from a female's stem cells, or eggs from a man's, but the article says that is a possibility (did you read it?), allowing for gay couples to create offspring. The article states that some scientists don't think they'll be able to get sperm from a woman's stem cells due to the lack of genes from the Y chromosome. But at the same time, the only mammal that has been born with two parents of the same sex came from two female mice, so that flies in the face of that.”

“That's so ridiculously out of left field that it escapes its own hilarity.
"What needs to be prevented is them attempting to conceive children together, using their own genes. That's wasteful and unethical and is not a right."
Where are you getting THAT from? We're talking about non-related homosexuals getting married, not incest (which is something you all have been confusing for some time now). As far as biology is concerned, there is no such thing as male-male or female-female reproductivity. I guess you never graduated from a biology class in your life.”

Take the "Opt Out" Public Option--Good Policy, Politics
Commented Oct 10, 2009 at 15:26:11 in Politics
“They won't use reconciliation, so you can forget about it. Would you prefer no public option, because you can't get single payer? I think the ideologues here need to take a step back and realize that we need SOMETHING. I really don't agree that this is a bad policy because it is not the almighty single payer or a universally-mandated public option. States do have rights, and in this case, I think that this would throw some meat to the libertarians. As for the actual opt-out process, I would say only make it vulnerable to a ballot vote, not via the legislature or the executive, which would leave health care to the people of the state rather than the state itself. Taking the long view is not dangerous because the public option stays national until states opt-out...the process of opting-out can be drawn out in any number of ways that would keep people insured long enough to influence policy, that is if opt-out is not restricted to referendum.”

“Charmed, while the President cannot legislatively repeal DADT on his own, he has several options which he has not used:
1. Executive order. He is the Commander-In-Chief and legally has the power to suspend DADT inquiries pending congressional review.
2. Legislative initiative. Submit his own legislation for Congress to vote on. Presidents of the United States are allowed to introduce their own bills.
3. The courts. His DOJ has the power to fight any law the President deems unconstitutional via the court system.”

“How would fewer plants be killed if we went vegan???
Being vegan means you eat nothing but plant-based food. Not even eggs or milk. So WTF are you talking about? Eating some machine-made ultra synthesized food that has no source in nature at all? Because that sounds like the opposite of what you are advocating.”

Red Meat vs Chicken: An Argument Against The False Distinction

“As for your "9 essential amino acids": Eight amino acids are generally regarded as essential for humans: phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, methionine, leucine, and lysine. Cysteine (or sulphur-containing amino acids), tyrosine (or aromatic amino acids), histidine and arginine are additionally required by infants and growing children. Essential amino acids are so called not because they are more important to life than the others, but because the body does not synthesize them, making it essential to include them in one's diet in order to obtain them. In addition, the amino acids arginine, cysteine, glycine, glutamine, histidine, proline, serine and tyrosine are considered conditionally essential, meaning they are not normally required in the diet, but must be supplied exogenously to specific populations that do not synthesize it in adequate amounts.”

“Ok, yes, I can admit I was wrong about the L-carnitine. I am not sure what article I read, but I should've double checked it first before calling it out as fact. However, complete proteins are those which contain the right concentrations of the amino acids that humans cannot synthesize from other amino acids or nitrogenous sources. Plants do not necessarily contain the amino acids arranged for us into peptides that we cannot create ourselves from the same amino acids that are freebase. We should eat more vegetables, but we should still eat some meat, not completely abandon it because too much is bad. Guess what? Too much fructose is bad (high fructose corn syrup as one example), but it does come from fruit and some vegetables. Too much sucrose is bad, but it does come from sugar cane (a plant). Too much cellulose is bad because we cannot use it, it will only clean you out (and at some point, too clean and gassy...I know). Eating grapes in excess will give you diarrhea and multiple bananas will give you constipation. Too much avocado is excess fat, and too much soy is excess isoflavones (phyto-estrogens, and yes they are hormonal in humans). Too much of starchy veggies and grains is bad. Excess meat has a variety of health consequences, but excess of anything is bad. Moderate your diet, don't do extreme anything with your food.”

“You cannot go fully vegetarian and be truly healthy. We are omnivores by nature. We need the proteins/amino acids provided by animal tissue, some of which cannot be provided by any means from plant protein sources. L-carnitine, an important amino acid for brain function, is only available from animal sources and supplementation (which is NOT an alternative - synthetic carnitine vs. natural.”
