I agree wholeheartedly with you! Black women disproportionally are uncomfortable with THEIR hair and yes project their discomfort on others. In fact, some hate their hair. They've ‘permed’ for so long, they are unaware of the texture or characteristics of their own hair! Black hair is worn like habiliments. Perms are tantamount to subjecting our daughters to female circumcision... okay, I'm exaggerating. It's a rite of passage to colonialization -- solid evidence that they will not stand up for Afrocentricity. Black hair angst is a chain that must be broken -- and can only be broken by black women.

I wear my hair in 'groomed' locks (dreadlocks carry philosophical connotations -- typically uncoifed, ungroomed and allowed to simply grow). I have never experienced discrimination that was discernible b/c of my hair. In fact, I get respect.

Michelle Obama's arms are beautiful. I would love to see her in locks! However, locks 'are' a time consuming process and commitment -- which includes a teenager phase when the hair is rebellious and does what it pleases. Ultimately, locks are much like Bonsai trees (you have to be the boss of your hair!) or a garden unlike any other garden. As locks mature, they are glorious and incredible.
